And apparently I failed to say: For further information see my
2017-09-25 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

Pizza Pop.

> 2. What is the name of the White House Communications Director

Hope Hicks. 4 for Erland, Dan, Marc, Joshua, and Pete.

> 3. Following a dramatic shift in position, Donald Trump said to
> Republicans: "They have great power over you people. They have
> less power over me." Which organization was Trump referring to?

National Rifle Association. "NRA" was sufficient. 4 for Erland,
Dan, Marc, Joshua, and Pete.

He then reversed his position again. Or something like that.
I try not to keep track.

> 4. Trump announced import tariffs on two products this week.
> Name either.

Steel, aluminum. 4 for everyone -- Erland, Peter, Dan, Marc, Jason,
Joshua, and Pete.

> temporarily reversed, bringing a frigid system from Asia to
> the west. What have meteorologists -- or newscasters, at least

The Beast from the East. 4 for Peter.

> the party to protest their leader, Martine Ouellet. How are

Groupe parlementaire Québécois.

> 7. Eric Hoskins, Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care,
> resigned on Monday. What new role is he taking on, which was
> announced on Tuesday?

Chair of the federal advisory council working toward a national
pharmacare program. (Anything along these lines was acceptable.)

> 8. On Thursday, Ontario's ban on the door-to-door sale of some
> products and services came into effect -- name any one of the

Air cleaners, air conditioners, air purifiers, duct cleaning,
furnaces, water filters, water heaters, water purifiers, water
softeners, water treatment devices.

In the original game the question said that "four services" were
affected and the expected answer listed four of the above products.
After protests were accepted, I went to the provincial government's
web site and found the complete list as shown above.

> 9. What Ontario city was subject to a hooded mob that broke windows

Hamilton.

> 10. The 2018 federal budget was released on Tuesday. Within
> $1,000,000,000, what is the projected federal deficit for the
> 2018-19 fiscal year?

$18,100,000,000. (Accepting $17,000,000,000 to $19,100,000,000,
as that's what was done in the original game. Apparently what they
really did was to allow a rounded total within the indicated range.)

Locke St.

> the race did receive a record number of votes, over 40% higher
> than the previous record from 2002. Within 2,000, how many

64,053. (Accepting 62,000 to 66,100, as was done in the original
game -- cf. answer 10 above).

They used online voting, with a ranked ballot, and it came down to
third preference before Ford beat Christine Elliott 6,202-6,049.
The total is less than 64,053 because of a weighting system that
scaled down the votes in any riding where over 100 people voted.

> newly announced tariffs on <answer 4 above>. After meeting

Australia. 4 for Erland, Peter, Dan, Joshua, and Pete.

> 4. Due to [concerns] about their use of electricity, Colin Read has
> proposed an 18-month moratorium on cryptocurrency mining farms

New York. 4 for Dan, Marc, and Joshua.

Yes, a geography question in current events. And #3 didn't require
you to know anything about the current negotiations either. All
I can say is, I didn't write it.

> 5. The Paralympic Winter Games opened this week. Who was Canada's
> flag-bearer?

Brian McKeever.

> 6. As of the close of play on Saturday, Canada had 4 medals in

Alpine skiing. (Mac Marcoux won the visually-impaired downhill
skiing.) 4 for Peter. 2 for Pete.

> country's second-highest military commander, relating to

Vice-Admiral Mark Norman.

Here's one commentator saying that the case is essentially political:

Martin Shkreli. 4 for Dan, Marc, Jason, Joshua, and Pete.

The drug was Daraprim, which has begun to be used against AIDS.
If Wikipedia is correct, the increased US price is more than
1,000,000% above the current price in some countries where it is
available generically, i.e. no longer patented. (I don't know
about Canada.)

Brenda Lucki.

Tyler Clippard.
