NASCAR Penalizes Marcos Ambrose and Casey Mears

Following their post-race scuffle at Richmond International Raceway, both Casey Mears and Marcos Ambrose were penalized on Tuesday. The pair made contact on track while racing for the 18th position, and as a result, confronted each other post-race. Things got heated as Mears gave Ambrose a shove, getting physical before Ambrose landed a punch to Mears, all of which was captured on FOX television cameras.

After reviewing video, NASCAR's response was to fine Ambrose $25,000, while Mears was fined $15,000. Both were placed on probation through May 28th. Per NASCAR, both drivers violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing), and 12-4.9 (Behavioral Penalty; involved in an altercation in the garage area after the race) per the 2014 series rulebook. No points penalties were given.

Both drivers, in different ways have shown their satisfaction with the result. Ambrose, through an official RPM statement claims he accepts the consequences and has chosen not to appeal. Mears, through his Twitter feed retweeted a fan that said, "Let's get back to racin'! AMEN!!!"

There were also reports that an unidentified ECR crew member sucker-punched Ambrose, in the midst of breaking up the scuffle. However NASCAR's investigation, which included looking at video and speaking with the Australian, who said he was not hit, resulted in no penalties.

Overnight Richmond TV Ratings down 12%

The racing may be much improved in NASCAR this season, but television ratings remain in a steady decline. Saturday night's Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Speedway earned an overnight rating of 3.0 on FOX, setting a new Nielsen low for the network in a non-rain delayed event. In the previous four years, Richmond had held steady at 3.4, one of the least popular races on the network but still holding a consistent audience.

Overall, FOX has yet to post a ratings increase for any of the nine races it's covered this season, including the lowest-rated Daytona 500 since the event was first televised flag-to-flag in 1979. Notably, since taking on NASCAR coverage in 2001 seven of the eight lowest-rated Sprint Cup races on FOX have aired on Saturday night. Five of those eight have taken place at Richmond.

Kurt Busch and Jacques Villeneuve Pass Refresher Tests at Indianapolis

Before the rains hit Indianapolis Motor Speedway Tuesday afternoon, both Kurt Busch and Jacques Villeneuve were able to pass the Indianapolis 500 Orientation Refresher test needed to participate in practice and qualifying for the 98th Indianapolis 500 in May.

Both drivers had previously passed the program before – Busch last year in his test with Andretti Autosport and Villeneuve as a past competitor and winner. They had to demonstrate solid car control, reaching speeds above 215 miles an hour all while meeting the second and third stage requirements of the rookie program.

Busch is attempting to become the fourth driver to do the "double" while competing in both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in the same day. He ran 66 laps and posted a best speed of 220.844 mph.

"This attempt is something serious. It's an amazing challenge. Overall, it was a good day just to settle in with the team and advance further than rookie orientation," Busch said. "It felt good to give feedback to the team from the car and have them explain things to me how we're going to move forward. They continued to change downforce combinations on the car and it was just neat to feel all that and check it off the list."

Villeneuve, meanwhile, made his last start in the Greatest Spectacle of Racing in 1995. He ran 83 laps and posted a fastest speed of 217.742 mph.

"It took a while to get there. The first few laps were surprising because it felt like I was going fast and I looked and it was 180 (mph)," the Canadian said. "I thought, 'There's still a long way to go,' and then 190. And another 10 laps, I started getting in the rhythm, and once you start going flat all around it becomes easy. I think your brain, your vision just needs to get used to driving at speed."

Busch will join other rookies for this year's Indy 500 on May 5th to turn more laps in preparation for the event.

Haulin' Watermelon: An Inside Look at No. 92 Truck Series Sponsorship with Driver Ross Chastain
by Greg Davis

Since 2011, one of the rising stars in NASCAR's Camping World Truck Series, Ross Chastain, has been officially partnered with the National Watermelon Association and Watermelon Promotion Board (www.watermelon.org), but his affiliation with the fruit extends his entire life. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone as passionate about their sponsor's product in one of NASCAR's premiere national series as Chastain.

Turns out the 21-year-old, Alva, Florida native and driver of the No. 92 BTS Tire & Wheel Distributors Ford F-150 for Ricky Benton Racing in the Truck Series comes from a long line of watermelon farmers. Chastain's family members have grown the fruit in South Florida for generations, making his ties to this associate sponsor so unique.

Starting from back when Chastain was driving Late Models in Florida at the age of 13, he, his family, and their connection to full-time farming paid off with money to go racing.

"Growing watermelons gave me a foot in the door at the Watermelon Promotion Board," said Chastain. He fondly recalls traveling up to Orlando to meet with the folks up there with his father and pitching them on sponsoring his car all those years ago. Now, seven years later, Ross Chastain is affectionately called "The Watermelon Kid" in the garage area by fans and drivers alike, working together with the Watermelon Board to build a memorable brand.

"I wanted to take the next step, and so did they, so we went truck racing," said Chastain.

Beginning his career in the Truck Series in 2011, Chastain debuted with Turn One Racing, earning a tenth-place finish at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis. He would start five events in total, earning two more top-20 results and turned some heads within the garage area. For 2012, Chastain was back in a truck, this time for SS Green Light Racing, with the National Watermelon Association and Promotion Board still on board. The sponsor wrap included the bed of his truck "filled" with watermelons (a gimmick that has become a trademark element of the truck's paint scheme for both driver and sponsor), making it one of the most unique-looking vehicles to run NASCAR today. Chastain earned two top-10 finishes that year, earning respect as a full-time competitor on tour.

Chastain then drove for Brad Keselowski Racing during the 2013 season, starting in 15 races and earning his first career pole award at Iowa Speedway in September's Fan Appreciation 200. He finished second to 2012 Camping World Truck Series Champion, and now Nationwide Series driver, James Buescher. Even after a breakout 2013 season, however, Chastain was not brought back by BKR, so he signed a deal with Ricky Benton and his RBR Enterprises race team out of Cerro Gordo, NC for 2014, bringing Watermelon along with him.

The amount of exposure that the driver of the No. 92 truck brings to further the promotion of watermelons is huge.

"We're getting watermelon.org out there on the track, and that's irreplaceable when you look at it," said Chastain, comparing sponsorship of the RBR truck versus buying air time on television ads in the markets they promote the fruit in across the country.

Ross Chastain and Ricky Benton Racing will be running 10-15 races this season depending on ongoing sponsorship. Currently, the RBR team is planning on running Kansas for the SFP 250, Charlotte for the North Carolina Education Lottery 200, and Dover for the Lucas Oil 200 this May.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA

Q:  For Dick Trickle fans, the 1990 Winston 500 might be best remembered as the race where he got caught smoking a cigarette by the in-car camera.  However, it was a decent run for Trickle until the day was ruined.  What happened?

Check back Thursday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Tuesday's Answer:

Q:  For Buddy Baker, the 1991 DieHard 500 was an interesting race.  Late in the event, he spun out Rick Mast in the tri-oval, triggering a blowover for the Skoal Classic Oldsmobile.  Earlier in the race, Baker triggered another issue on-track.  What happened?

A: Baker got into the rear of Ernie Irvan entering Turn 1 just barely.  However, at 190+ mph, it simply doesn't take much to create a mess.  Irvan spun up the track, forcing rookie Bobby Hamilton to try and avoid him.  Hamilton hit Irvan, then sideswiped Jimmy Spencer, who hit the wall.  Rick Wilson hit Irvan as well.  Richard Petty, Lake Speed, Greg Sacks and Ted Musgrave were also involved.  The crash can be seen in this clip.

Spencer and Wilson were out of the race on the spot.  Sacks and Richard Petty continued after simple pit stops, while the others required some time behind the wall.  As for Baker, he finished on the lead lap in 13th.

What To Watch: Tuesday

- Tuesday is traditionally penalty day in NASCAR, and there is quite the doozy for NASCAR to sift through this week.  First on the list is that officials have vowed to investigate the Marcos Ambrose - Casey Mears incident from Saturday night.  At the bare minimum, there will be a penalty levied at the man representing ECR Engines who sucker-punched Ambrose after Ambrose punched Mears.  What is unclear is what will happen to the two drivers at the root of the conflict.  We'll all find out together, updating our homepage with Breaking News if and when it comes out today.

- Also today, Kurt Busch will be at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to begin Rookie Orientation.  In order to be cleared to practice during the month of May, Busch must pass the three stages, which require laps between 200-210 mph, 210-215 mph, then over 215 mph.  He will be judged by his peers.

Kurt Busch and Andretti Autosport Unveil Indy 500 Car

Andretti Autosport of the Verizon IndyCar Series announced Monday that their No. 26 Honda entry in the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500, piloted by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kurt Busch, will be sponsored by Suretone Entertainment.  The Santa Monica, CA-based record label, management, and film company is owned by entertainment industry veteran Jordan Schur, the former President of Geffen Records.  The car was officially unveiled during a ceremony and press conference on Monday morning at Andretti Autosport headquarters in Indianapolis.

In a statement from Andretti Autosport, Schur said, "We are honored to have Suretone Entertainment stand with Andretti Autosport and Kurt Busch in this historic event as Kurt enters his first Indianapolis 500 qualifying run, as well as attempts to become only the fourth driver in motorsport history to contest the 'Double'".

The 2004 Sprint Cup Series Champion Busch, 35, is set to take on the challenge of driving both the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the same day on May 25th.  Busch will join John Andretti, Robby Gordon, and Tony Stewart all-time in undertaking the daunting task of completing the "double," all while making his IndyCar debut.

NASCAR to Review Mears/Ambrose Post-Race Incident

Following the conclusion of Saturday night's Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Raceway, driver of the No. 13 Chevy SS for Germain Racing, Casey Mears, and Marcos Ambrose, driver of the No. 9 Ford Fusion for Richard Petty Motorsports were involved in a physical altercation in the infield. The two drivers were battling for the 18th position on the track at the end of the race, bumping and driving hard on one another the entire night.

FOX Sports was able to catch the action on camera, with Mears pushing Ambrose, and Ambrose punching Mears, but was not able to get an interview or comment from either of the drivers, crew members, or PR reps during their post-race show late on Saturday. That's where we stood entering Monday morning

Yesterday, NASCAR stood by official word that they will be reviewing the incident to see if anyone on either of the teams will be penalized for the events that took place. However, NASCAR Vice President of Competition, Robin Pemberton was quoted as saying, "we don't think it was anything too severe". Mears did take some press interviews on Monday, including calling in as a guest on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio with Dave Moody and Angie Skinner, and on FOX Sports 1's NASCAR RaceHub show. Ambrose and RPM declined to comment on the incident Monday, but the two drivers did connect via a call and according to Mears, he and Ambrose "had a really good conversation".

Casey Mears and the No. 13 GEICO Chevy finished 18th in the race, while Ambrose and his No. 9 Stanley/DeWalt Ford finished in the 19th position at the end of the event.

Goodyear to Run Special Message to Troops on Tires

For the fifth consecutive year, NASCAR tire supplier Goodyear will be running the special "Support Our Troops" message on the sidewalls of tires for all three of the national NASCAR series next month. The special patriotic tires will get used during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 17th, as well as during the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte.

The tires help to raise awareness and funds for the Support Our Troops Organization, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping boost morale among our Armed Forces stationed abroad.

News 'N' Notes

- Former NASCAR driver and current TV analyst Kyle Petty will kick off his 20th Annual Charity Ride Across America this weekend. The charity motorcycle ride raises funds and awareness for the Victory Junction Camp, a special camp created in 2004 for children suffering from chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The ride will begin in Carlsbad, California on May 3rd and conclude at Daytona Beach, Florida on May 10th. Among those riding in all or parts of the trip will be NASCAR personalities Richard Petty, Geoff Bodine, Donnie Alison, Rutledge Wood, and Sprint Cup driver Matt Kenseth.

- NASCAR premier national series title sponsor Sprint has officially announced that they will suspend all marketing activities as a sponsor of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers.  The announcement came after the allegations that Clippers Owner, Donald Sterling made racist comments after an audiotape was recently released to the public.  Sprint joins seven other major sponsors of the basketball franchise that have decided to cease their sponsorships with the organization.  The NBA is currently investigating the claims, and as of press time, no action has been taken against Sterling.  However, there is a press conference scheduled for 2 PM ET this afternoon where NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will talk about the investigation and may levy some kind of a punishment.

Can You Believe We Watched Another Great Race?
Sitting In The Stands: A Fan's View
by S.D. Grady

Can you believe four tires went down during Saturday night's Toyota Owners 400?

Uh, yeah.  Were you expecting something different?  This year, Goodyear has brought tires that consistently wear to just about every track.  Teams have been forced to run within the setup guidelines if they want a full fuel stop.  So watching Cole Whitt, Reed Sorenson and Clint Bowyer's machines go up in flames after their tires failed... I wasn't shocked at the failures.  A little alarmed at the consistent display of flame, perhaps but not that it mattered as in the end, everyone came out in one piece. Stickers now don't automatically mean success if you don't setup your car right.

Can you believe Clint Bowyer booted Kyle Larson in the opening lap?

Despite the muttering and general boos erupting from the booth, I was not one of those shocked that an experienced veteran known for his scrappy style of driving dove into the tiny opening Larson ignored for a split second.  Nor was I stunned that neither did the rookie just roll over and let the guy with more laps drive right through.  Was that a rookie mistake on Larson's part?  Yes, for expecting the cars starting behind him to remain there through the first turn while he sorted out how his No. 42 would handle that night.  There was no dirty pool here, just hard racing.  So, yeah, I can believe it!

Can you believe Jeff Gordon didn't win... again?

As much as it pains me to say, yes I can.  The entire NASCAR nation has aptly identified Gordon's Achilles heel: restarts.  What happened in the final 50 laps of the race?  Three restarts, including a pit stop that shuffled the No. 24 back from the front row.  As soon as Matt Kenseth passed Gordon with his No. 20 that suddenly came to life, the day was more or less over for the four-time champ.  No amount of stellar driving was going to save the day.  Has he still earned the points lead?  You better believe it.  So it's only a matter of time and timing now.  One of these races, we'll get a long green run at the end.  Gordon will be there to rule the day.

But what about those final nine laps?  Can you believe the beating and banging and general excitement found among Keselowski, Gordon, Kenseth and Logano?

Oh, you mean the three Sprint Cup champions and a young man finally coming into his own, fighting tooth and nail for a short track win?  That scraping and scrambling? Because all four of them are known for their gentlemanly driving styles?

Yes, I can.

If we've learned one thing this year, great racing and great races are still part of our sport.  Fortunately, NASCAR seems to have stumbled onto the magic mix of tire, machine and drivers to produce exciting race after race.  This season has been the kind of competition that taught me to love auto racing.

Any week, at any track, anything could happen to anyone.  Freak mechanical failures, tires giving up forcing teams to truly manage their rubber, and pilots pushed to the limit by a field of competitive drivers.  The fact that I first became enamored by NASCAR in the 1980s only further communicates how important the blend of parity and brilliance is to the avid viewer.  We need wheelmen with the abilities of superheroes and cars that actually will crumble when push comes to shove.

Who's going to win it all in 2014?  I haven't a freakin' clue.  There's no dominance out there, just awesome competition.

Can I believe a great year of racing is actually happening?
I still haven't entirely bought into the genius of the current model. But I'm well on my way!

P.S. - If the Waltrip Brothers ever say, "Are you kidding me?" again, I may shoot my television.

Numbers Game: Toyota Owners 400

Laps led by pole sitter Kyle Larson after getting turned by Clint Bowyer in the first turn of the first lap of Richmond. The talented rookie, despite multiple top-5 finishes has yet to lead a lap on the Cup level in 2014.

1
Number of Toyotas who led a race named after the manufacturer. Only Matt Kenseth made it up front, leading 35 laps until passed by Joey Logano late for the victory.

2
Wins for Joey Logano in 2014, after Richmond which is a new career high for the driver over a single season.

3
Drivers who have completed every lap in 2014 through nine events: Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, and Carl Edwards. Edwards' streak was in jeopardy, following an unscheduled green-flag stop for a flat tire but he used a wavearound, then a Lucky Dog to fight back. (Edwards ran ninth).

4
Cautions for "debris" or "competition" out of the nine thrown at Richmond.

Drivers inside the current top 10 in points who haven't won a race. That includes the top 2, Gordon and Kenseth along with eighth-place Jimmie Johnson, ninth-place Ryan Newman and tenth-place Brian Vickers.

Finishing position for AJ Allmendinger, the best Cup run for him since he ran second, in the Spring of 2012 at Martinsville driving for Penske Racing. For the No. 47 car, as mentioned yesterday it was the best performance since Bobby Labonte ran fourth with the team in the 2011 Daytona 500.

6.8
Average finish of Jeff Gordon through the first nine races, good enough to lead the points and all other NASCAR drivers in this category.

8
Races for rookie Austin Dillon since his lone top-10 finish of the season, a ninth in the season-opening Daytona 500. He was a mediocre 27th Saturday night.

20.3
Average finish for Denny Hamlin in his last three Richmond starts. Before that, his average finish at the track was a sizzling 7.3 for his career.

24
Drivers to finish on the lead lap Saturday night. Only Martinsville (25) had more.

27

Drivers with at least one top-10 finish this season after Martin Truex, Jr. earned his first (10th) at Richmond.

64
Points between 25th-place Kurt Busch in the standings and 31st-place David Ragan, leaving the driver relatively safe. Each winner this season must remain inside the top 30 in driver points to stay eligible for a Chase bid.

$54,180
Amount earned by Reed Sorenson for running 42nd after his car lost a tire and then subsequently caught on fire.

$91,071
Amount earned by Clint Bowyer for running dead last after his car did roughly the exact same thing. Anyone notice a difference between NASCAR's upper and lower class?

Q:  For Buddy Baker, the 1991 DieHard 500 was an interesting race.  Late in the event, he spun out Rick Mast in the tri-oval, triggering a blowover for the Skoal Classic Oldsmobile.  Earlier in the race, Baker triggered another issue on-track.  What happened?

Monday's Answer:

Q:  Much of Michael Waltrip's success (and all of his career victories) have come in restrictor plate races.  However, in the first restrictor plate race at Talladega in 1988, his day ended in a rather stomach-churning way.  What happened?

A:  Right after a restart, Waltrip went hard into the wall exiting Turn 2 and rode the wall to the middle of the backstretch.  In a rare instance, the steering column broke in the crash as well.  The crash can be seen here.

ESPN having in-car cameras in Waltrip's Country Time Pontiac showed a clearly dazed Waltrip following the hit.  Once stopped, Waltrip immediately got out of the car and proceeded to violate the edict that your momma taught you as a child ("Look both ways before you cross the street.").  Waltrip didn't do it intentionally.  He was so dazed that he didn't realize that the track was still hot.  He was done for the day, but he did not miss a race.  At the time, there were four weeks between Talladega and the next points race at Charlotte (three weeks to The Winston).  That was enough time for Waltrip to recuperate.

Sprint Cup Race Recap: Logano Wins Wild Battle at Richmond
by Justin Tucker

Kyle Larson won the pole. Jeff Gordon led much of the race. Joey Logano?

He just waited patiently for an opportunity late on Saturday night.  And when Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski, and Gordon got into a three-way battle for the win, it was Logano who pounced with just three laps to go, getting the jump on all of them.  It was enough not only to squeeze out in front, but pull away to win Saturday night's Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

Logano, who came into Saturday's race winless in his first ten starts at the 3/4-mile oval, virtually came out of nowhere after J.J. Yeley's blown engine bunched up the field one last time on Lap 386. On the final restart, with nine laps left Logano, who lined up fourth, fell back initially and bided his time. Then, once the field settled out and Kenseth, Keselowski, and Gordon all jockeyed for the top spot, he closed in and made a power move to the bottom of the racetrack.  Logano cleared the trio, after some hard side-by-side racing and then held off a surging Gordon to score his second trophy of the season. Now, with three career victories driving for Roger Penske the youngster has more in 45 races with the team than he scored in over four seasons (nearly 150 starts) with former employer Joe Gibbs Racing.

"It feels great," said Logano. "I want to start winning some races in the Chase now.  These cars right now are so good and (Team) Penske is doing such a great job with these cars right now.  I am just the lucky guy that gets to drive these things."

With his second win of 2014, Logano has assured himself a spot in that Chase, joining Kevin Harvick as the only multiple winners this season. Gordon, meanwhile kept his incredible start to the 2014 season going with a strong second-place effort.  He would lead a race-high 173 laps on the evening, clearly the best driver on long runs but couldn't close the deal during a short sprint.

"All night long, I just had to let the 2 and the 22 go right by me because they were so fast on fresh tires," Gordon said.

That short run push almost sent them to a 1-2 finish, with Brad Keselowski using the outside line to challenge Kenseth and Gordon up front. In the end, a block from Kenseth's No. 20 sent Keselowski high, caused contact and pushed him back to third place. Feeling Kenseth squeezed him up the track in the closing laps, the frustrated Penske racing driver slammed into his rival post-race, a bump that also damaged the cars of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and AJ Allmendinger before throwing his gloves on pit road, pointing fingers at Kenseth and angrily venting during a post-race interview.

"Every race track you should race for the win, but you don't run somebody off the racetrack to race for the win if you really aren't fast enough," Keselowski said.  "Three, four other cars passed him so it didn't win him the race running me off the racetrack. He probably finished where he was going to finish anyway. It just cost me the win, and I don't think that's very smart. That's something I'll remember."

Kenseth, on the other hand, didn't understand the frustration for Keselowski after the race, a bump-and-run that even caused impartial observer Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to say, "Get over it."

"I think you race as hard as you can to win. I'm not going to go wreck somebody to win, and he certainly tried to wreck me on the race track," Kenseth said. "That's one thing, and then trying to wreck all those cars after the race is totally another.  That's always uncalled for.  I can see he's upset.  I ran him up the track.  I'd probably be upset, too, but like I said we're racing as hard as we could to try to get that win."

Joining Logano and Gordon in the top 5 of Saturday's Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond were: Kyle Busch after a late-race charge in third, then Keselowski in fourth and Kenseth in fifth.  AJ Allmendinger finished sixth, while Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fell back to seventh due to brake issues down the stretch.  Ryan Newman was eighth, Carl Edwards ninth, while Martin Truex, Jr. rounded out the top 10 with his first top-10 of the season for his new team, the No. 78 of Furniture Row Racing.

The wild action wasn't just reserved for the track as tempers flared during post-race between several drivers.  The tone was set as Clint Bowyer would spin pole sitter Kyle Larson on the opening lap of the race.  Larson would recover from the early spin to finish 16th while Bowyer was not as lucky as suspension issues would end his night, on lap 159 in 43rd place. Then, Justin Allgaier sought out Denny Hamlin in the garage after the two made contact late, sending Allgaier into the wall and ruining the rookie's first potential top-10 finish. But it was Marcos Ambrose and Casey Mears who had the most serious altercation, resulting in Ambrose punching Mears in the face.  Although unclear as to what caused the fight, NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said NASCAR would further investigate the matter.

"We don't think it was anything too severe," Pemberton said of an incident, caught on camera in which both drivers got physical before crewmembers intervened.  "We'll get all the footage that we can and look at it and see what happens from there. … We've got to take our time and do everything."

Tire issues also once again plagued a Sprint Cup Series race in 2014 as Jimmie Johnson, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Reed Sorenson and others would have issues with their Goodyear Eagles. Right-front tires appeared to give way after no more than 55 laps, melting pieces of rubber while setting oil lines and other parts of the front of the car on fire as they split apart. Sorenson had the most serious incident, literally pulled from his No. 36 Chevy by safety workers as pieces of tire set off a fire that burnt the entire front portion of his car to a crisp.

A look at the Toyota Owners 400 by the numbers: There were 20 lead changes among eight different drivers and nine cautions for 66 laps would slow the race pace to 93.369 MPH.

Next week, the Sprint Cup Series heads to the Talladega Superspeedway for the Aaron's 499. Green flag scheduled for 1:20 PM ET next Sunday.

Chasing the Chase: Gordon Slightly Extends Lead With Excellent Night
by Phil Allaway

Jeff Gordon came into Darlington with the slimmest of leads and knew he had to run great to keep it.  Mission accomplished.  Gordon led a race-high 173 laps, dominant at times in his Drive To End Hunger No. 24 Chevrolet and finished second.  However, even with that run, it still took some late-race fireworks to keep the point lead as Matt Kenseth was looking good for a win until he got into a bumping match with Brad Keselowski.

Kenseth, who then dropped back to a fifth-place result allowed Gordon to extend his lead back up to five.  Carl Edwards still sits third, but fell to over half-a-race's worth of points behind after finishing ninth.  Edwards, who made an unscheduled pit stop for tires at one point that left him two laps behind used the wavearound and Lucky Dog to get back in position for a top 10.  Kyle Busch, meanwhile is up two places this week to fourth after using late-race pit strategy to finish third (he was the only driver in the top 5 to pit after the leader's final round of stops with 30 laps to go). Using fresh tires, Busch blitzed the field on the final restart, jumping from outside the top 15 to third - and closing - by the checkered flag.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. had to run the final ten laps of the race with only rear brakes after boiling his brake fluid.  As a result, Earnhardt Jr. fell to a seventh-place finish.  That was enough to drop one spot in the points to fifth.  Joey Logano's victory on Saturday night moved him up two places in points to sixth, while Brad Keselowski's fourth-place finish kept him seventh. Jimmie Johnson, meanwhile dropped three places to eighth after having multiple flat tires Saturday night.  While Johnson's car did not catch fire, the Goodyear issues cost him four laps on track, relegating him to a 32nd-place finish.

Ryan Newman had a very quiet run up through the field at Richmond, in position to challenge for a win at one point but inevitably faded to an eighth-place finish.  That allowed Newman to maintain the ninth spot in the regular season standings.  Brian Vickers, meanwhile had an up-and-down night, running for the lead at one point while straining to stay inside the top 20 at others.  In the end, he finished in 12th.  That was enough to move Vickers up into a tie for tenth in points with Greg Biffle.  Biffle also struggled for much of the evening before running 15th.  Finally, Austin Dillon, the series' top rookie in points is down to 12th after finishing exactly where he started (27th) on Saturday night.  Yes, Dillon got up into the top 15 at one point, but he got booted out of the groove shortly after a restart, ended up 27th and stayed there for the rest of the race, struggling to stay competitive behind the wheel of his No. 3.

Point Standings (1-16): 1) Jeff Gordon 341, 2) Matt Kenseth -5, 3) Carl Edwards -28, 4) Kyle Busch -31, 5) Dale Earnhardt, Jr. -32, 6) Joey Logano -49, 7) Brad Keselowski -54, 8) Jimmie Johnson -59, 9) Ryan Newman -69, t-10) Brian Vickers -85, t-10) Greg Biffle -85, 12) Austin Dillon -89, 13) Kyle Larson -90, 14) Denny Hamlin -96, 15) Tony Stewart -98, 16) Marcos Ambrose -99.

Outside of the top-16, but in Chase Contention: t-20) Kevin Harvick -121, 25) Kurt Busch -156.

Race Winners: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (Daytona), Kevin Harvick (Phoenix, Darlington), Brad Keselowski (Las Vegas), Carl Edwards (Bristol), Kyle Busch (Fontana), Kurt Busch (Martinsville), Joey Logano (Texas, Richmond)

Never Fear, The Underdogs Are Here: Richmond Edition
by Amy Henderson

Are you a fan of a driver from a smaller team?  Do you ever see one of these guys on the race results and wonder how he got there?  NASCAR's small teams may not get much airtime during the race broadcast, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to talk about.  Each week, Amy Henderson takes a peek into how the little guys fared in the race.

Underdog Selection No. 1: AJ Allmendinger for JTG-Daugherty Racing; started 14th, finished 6th

This team is one on the verge of not being included as an underdog anymore.  Like Furniture Row Racing, better finishes are to be expected as the team has Richard Childress Racing equipment and access to all of RCR's extensive information to help make the cars go faster.  Allmendinger, meanwhile in his first full season with JTG is showing why Roger Penske believed in him even after a suspension for violating NASCAR's drug policy. Back then, in mid-2012 the owner was forced, via company policy to fire his driver.  But Penske was still confident enough, after Allmendinger got cleared to hire him back the following year, handing the driver a limited schedule in both IndyCar and the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Allmendinger thanked him by winning both NNS races and having a near-miss in Indy — if not for a seat belt problem, he might well have won the biggest event in American racing.  Now, Allmendinger and his new team, the No. 47 of JTG-Daugherty Racing are putting it together in a big way.

"It was a good race," said Allmendinger after Richmond, bringing the car its best result since Bobby Labonte ran fourth in the 2011 Daytona 500. "Just a tough racetrack.  I was really happy with the car in general.  It's just such a fine line between being too tight and burning the rear tires off or just being a little too loose the whole time.  I thought there were two or three long runs I thought the car was awesome.  Then, another couple of runs it wasn't as good.  Overall, proud of the guys.  We definitely had a top-15 car all day, top-10 car probably.  Probably stole one there finish-wise at the end, but we are getting there."

If Allmendinger keeps stealing those finishes, this team will leave the underdogs behind.

Underdog Selection No. 2: Casey Mears for Germain Racing; started 34th, finished 19th

Germain Racing also inked a deal with RCR this year, and while they've been a little slower off the block, this week, they put it all together.  It's a shame that what most people will remember from Richmond was Mears' post-race altercation with Marcos Ambrose because his on-track performance should have been the story.  Mears came from 34th to 15th and was moving forward before a speeding penalty derailed that charge.  He made it back to 16th, only to have a tire reportedly cut by Ambrose, sparking the fireworks after the race that left Mears with a swollen and cut face.

The No. 13 team got lucky with a caution for J.J. Yeley's blown engine, one that allowed Mears to pit under caution and not lose laps, though they lost any chance at a top-10 finish.  But this team is headed to one of the driver's best tracks this week with some of the best restrictor plate equipment in NASCAR.  If Mears can avoid trouble, he could put the heartache of Richmond in the rear-view for good, in position to contend for the win Sunday at Talladega.

Underdog Selection No. 3: David Gilliland for Front Row Motorsports; started 33rd, finished 20th

Most people probably think of David Ragan as FRM's top driver after he pulled off an upset win at Talladega last spring. But in reality, that title belongs to Gilliland over the last couple of years, with a higher average finish and a greater degree of consistency.  This season, that average result is three spots better than Ragan's, and Gilliland's been more competitive overall.  In Richmond, Gilliland nabbed his first lead-lap finish of the year, swapping paint with Ambrose before Mears while fighting hard to stay inside the top 20, and within striking distance of the leaders during the final 100 laps. Lead-lap finishes are a big deal to FRM, and Gilliland came through this week with the first for Bob Jenkins' three-car operation in 2014.

Underdog Pick of the Week - Talladega: Casey Mears for Germain Racing

My pick for Richmond was AJ Allmendinger, whose run was foiled by a Darlington Stripe that went a little too far.  He finished sixth, easily best in class, so it was a good pick.

This week, the Cup Series visits big, bad Talladega Superspeedway. While David Ragan won this race a year ago, my nod goes to Mears, who's visiting his best track, one where he's come tantalizingly close to a win on more than one occasion.  For Mears, the question will be simply whether he can avoid trouble; the driver rarely starts it but always seems to be in the middle of it.  If luck stays on his side, this underdog's got a shot at not only besting the other small-team drivers but the entire field.

Is your favorite driver among NASCAR's underdogs?  Are you frustrated with the lack of coverage they receive during race broadcasts? Amy has all the small teams covered each and every week in The Big Six.  Be sure to check it out to see how your favorites fared!

Letter of the Race: Saturday night's Richmond race was brought to you by the letter "C," for confidence. Joey Logano, at age 23 is quickly growing into a driver willing to lay it all on the line, the right way -- without wrecking his rival or the entire field. Saturday night's final laps showcased someone whose maturity, mixed with God-given talent has gotten him in position to fully contend for a title with Roger Penske. - Phil Allaway

Marcos Ambrose Punches Casey Mears in the Face

Towards the end of Saturday night's Toyota Owners 400, tempers began to flare.  Marcos Ambrose and Casey Mears, who finished 18th and 19th, respectively, entered into a series of bumping matches.  While the TV coverage did not show it definitively, sources claim that contact between the two drivers cut Mears' left front tire right as the final caution flew for J.J. Yeley's blown engine in the No. 30 Chevy.

Afterwards, Mears was none too pleased with Ambrose.  Mears confronted the Tasmanian racer in an attempt to get an explanation for what had just gone on.  Ambrose attempted to walk away, but Mears then grabbed Ambrose to keep him from doing so.  Ambrose then responded with a punch that hit Mears just above his left eye before scurrying away quickly.  Ambrose was later hit by an unidentified man in an ECR firesuit before he vacated the scene.

Mears ran in Sunday's Jimmie Johnson Foundation 5K, back in the Charlotte area, but did so wearing sunglasses for much of the time.  He did take a picture with ESPN's Marty Smith (posted on Twitter) that showed the early development of a black eye.  Mears also talked to NASCAR.com's Alan Cavanna about his evening.  Mears stated to Cavanna that there were a series of events during Saturday night's race that ticked both drivers off.

"One thing I can say is that out of all the NASCAR fights, when you see people swing it's usually a lot of fly-swatting," the driver told Cavanna. "He actually connected, so that was pretty good."

NASCAR has stated that they will investigate the incident.  However, a confrontation between drivers like the Ambrose - Mears incident falls squarely inside of the "Boys, have at it" mantra that NASCAR has been publicizing for the last couple of years.  If any punishment at all is levied towards the two drivers, it will be announced later this week.

Tire Issues Mar Richmond Race

Had the Ambrose - Mears confrontation never happened, Saturday's Toyota Owners 400 would be remembered for a spate of tire issues that made it so the race could not go more than 64 laps all night without someone having a tire problem that brought out a caution.  This weekend was the race debut at the three-quarters of a mile "D-Shaped" oval for Goodyear's Dual Zone tires, and sadly, they flunked the test.

However, it appears that only teams that pressed their luck too much on camber were the ones that suffered.  For some cars, like Brad Keselowski's, cords were showing on their right front tire at the Lap 42 Competition Caution.  From then on, selected drivers would have their right fronts essentially peel apart at the inside shoulder.

"The problem is they put a harder inside edge on the right front and right rear here, and that's eventually where we ride most of the time around the racetrack on that part of the tire," explained third-place finisher Kyle Busch. "Why they went harder on that, I'm not sure.  They could have probably left the same inside edge and probably went a little softer on the outside edge, but it's just too hard of a compound for here.  We were all basically on ice; it was just like having a hard tire out there.  The effort that they tried to gain with the left-side tire softening it up, you could just take the left-sides off, it didn't feel like they did anything.  Really tough for all of us to, for one, keep the tires under our car... it's supposed to be more durable [but it] was just not the right way to go obviously for Goodyear."

Drivers would have warning that the tire was coming apart and the onus was on them to get to pit road.  If they did it immediately, then there were few lingering issues other than a couple of laps lost.  However, not fixing the issue could result in another failure.  Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer found that out the hard way.

"The track temperature was really cold," explained Joey Logano's crew chief, Todd Gordon, among a minority who thought the failures were track and setup-related. "I think you had a similar situation to what we had at Martinsville earlier this year where it was so cold that the track would never take rubber.  The track surface has got to get hot enough that the rubber will actually get into it. That's where the new aero package and the new ride heights and everything that we've done differently to this year's car has now put a lot back in my hands of risk and reward.  Goodyear does an awesome job for us in building good race tires, but they're in a box that gets smaller as we make those cars go faster as far as what they can do."

One thing we know for certain; if drivers waited until the tire completely came apart, a whole 'nother threat was waiting for them.  The strips of rubber from the tire would get onto the brake rotors and catch on fire.  The fiery rubber would fling off the car and draw a caution (if it wasn't already out).  Then, the entire right front corner of the car would then catch fire.  This happened three separate times during Saturday night's race (to Cole Whitt, Bowyer and Reed Sorenson) causing major scrambling and the whole front of the car to burn into melted metal.

Quotes to Remember: Toyota Owners 400
compiled by Phil Allaway

"Having a couple wins this early in the season and in two completely different racetracks make you very confident for the rest of the season. At this point, we really have nothing to lose; it's all about going for wins, having fun out there and making sure we're ready for when the Chase starts. We've put ourselves in a good position this early, and we're going to have some fun." - Joey Logano, race winner

"Yeah, I really thought when we started on the inside there that we were going to have a real shot at it. My car was a little bit freer underneath those guys than I anticipated, so I kind of fell back to fourth, and then we had a couple more restarts. We got into third, and then there at the end actually I got right behind Matt on that last restart and I knew I was better than him; it's just a matter of trying to get him up off the bottom and get a run. That was tough. And then, the 2 was just right there, and his car was just so good on the short runs, and to be able to go to the outside like that is just ‑‑ shows you how good your car is on the short runs. When he got to the outside of me, I thought we were done, but then Matt started driving up the racetrack to block him and gave the inside to me, so now here I come back, and then Matt sort of turned down and I clipped him and didn't get a good run off of 2, and then the 22 came. To come home second is still a great finish. Would have liked to have seen a longer run because we were really, really good after about 20 laps. That's when our car really seemed to come on. It was a great night. We were having fun. Gosh, what great race cars we're bringing to the racetrack, great pit stops all night tonight. It's frustrating to not win, but also each time we run this good, it builds more confidence and momentum that we're going to get that win soon." - Jeff Gordon, finished second

"Our day started out a little slow but then picked up. We got all the way up to fourth. I felt like our car was pretty good, and from there just one little change, I felt like once we got to fourth, one little change more was going to make us a good car, a car to compete for the lead, and that little change we made took us all the way back to 14th. We're really battling a knife's edge with our cars, it seems like. I don't know if everybody is, maybe. But ours more than others because we do these little changes sometimes each week and go from leading a race or third or something like that back to further than 10th. That last restart, though, was intense. I really doubted Dave (Rogers, crew chief). I thought that that was a bad call coming in and putting tires on, but man, when we went back green, everybody went fighting for the bottom. It looked like they had 80 laps on their tires, and I had stickers on, and I think they only had eight laps on their tires. Really crazy the way that ended up and just drove past everybody on the outside like a bad mofo, just getting my job done like I was supposed to, and kind of recovering our day and ended up third. Thought we had a shot to win for a second with those guys racing up front the way they were. I thought if I could get there and they were all still racing, I might have been able to pass the 22 and the 24, also, but once I got there they were kind of single-filed out, so I got there a little late, and rolled home third. We'll take it." - Kyle Busch, finished third

"With me and Brad (Keselowski) specifically, I don't know he was mad because I ran into him a little bit getting into (turn) three, but we're going for the win. I ran him up to the third groove or so, but I've witnessed him racing that way a lot like I think he did to Jimmie (Johnson) at Texas a few years ago. I thought once we got to the straightaway, I left him enough room unless I wasn't clear, I need to re-watch it. I guess he's upset about that and we were all going for the win, that's what we're supposed to be doing." - Matt Kenseth, finished fifth, on his duel with Brad Keselowski and the resulting anger

"Had a lot of brake problems with the car and the fluid boiled over under that last caution and I couldn't keep the pedal up and had all rear brakes that last run. Just real loose getting in the corner and trying to run seventh was all I could do and just trying not to fall back worse than that. The run before when we were racing with Matt (Kenseth) and I thought we had a little bit better car in the end in the middle of the corner, but at that next caution, we boiled over. We had brake problems the last 150-200 laps and it would leave the fluids black and Steve (Letarte) said it had boiled over a couple times. So we got a lot of rubber build up on the brake duct and the grill so it just got real hot." - Dale Earnhardt, Jr., finished seventh

"I thought we had a shot at a top 5 there, but the short runs were just killing us.  We just couldn't take off for the first 15 or 20 laps of a run. All those guys up there were really fast and we weren't. We had a really good car on those last couple of long runs, but we had short runs at the end. We have to figure out how to get that short run going. Those long runs toward the end, we had something for them.  It was a good [night] for us." - Martin Truex, Jr., finished tenth

"We never could get the car to turn through the center of the corner.  We lacked rear grip and got behind on one run with a funky set of tires there. We kind of got caught back in the swarm and were never able to quite make it up. It all just didn't line up right on the restarts there at the end. We were just a little bit off tonight with our Outback Steakhouse Chevrolet." - Kevin Harvick, finished 11th

"We struggled tonight in the Haas Automation Chevrolet.  The car was loose in, tight in the center and loose off for most of the night. It was frustrating, because we practiced early in the weekend and I thought we had a pretty good handle on our setup, but for some reason the car responded differently tonight. The guys all worked on it and we were racing our way into a decent finish before that final long run caused us to have a flat tire. It's frustrating, but we were able to race our way back onto the lead lap and gain a few spots at the end." - Kurt Busch, finished 23rd

"Really thought we had a decent car and was going to run in the top 5, top 10 at the worst. Then we had one run where we cut a right-front and the next run another right-front. Not exactly sure why we had that issue, but we did have back-to-back tire issues there. That really just kind of put an end to our night. We didn't have anything for the win, but I thought we could run top 5." - Jimmie Johnson, finished 32nd

"Seems like the rubber got to the oil lines and the brake lines and that was what was burning was the oil and the fuel. So I got out of there as quick as I could and to try and not inhale all that smoke. Definitely not what you want to be inside of." - Reed Sorenson, finished 42nd (Stripped Tire, Fire)

"It was on fire. What a bad night. I hate this for AAA. This is our first race with them and was really proud to have them on board with us tonight. It was just one thing after another and not a very good night. I really hate that [the first-lap spin] happened. I really like Kyle (Larson) and I'm a big fan of his. Him and the 2 (Brad Keselowski) kind of spun the tires and I just got such a big run him when he moved up. Then I was like, 'Okay, I guess I'm going to go to the bottom if you're going to give me the bottom.' Then, at the last minute he arched it in and I just wasn't ready for him. I tried to get on the brakes and just got into him. I'm so glad he didn't hit the wall. I was afraid he hit the wall and ended his night. It certainly didn't help it at all." - Clint Bowyer, finished 43rd (Stripped Tire, Fire)

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:
Much of Michael Waltrip's success (and all of his career victories) have come in restrictor plate races.  However, in the first restrictor plate race at Talladega in 1988, his day ended in a rather stomach-churning way.  What happened?

Check back Tuesday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Friday's Answer:

Q:  In the rain-delayed 2002 Pontiac Excitement 400, Kevin Harvick was having a decent day until he was caught up in a crash that was completely out of his control.  What happened?

A:  Shortly after halfway, Rusty Wallace began to slow on track.  Wallace tried to get down to pit road, but with a stampede of other drivers out there, that's easier said than done.  While Wallace was moving to the inside, Jeff Burton was spun out from behind entering Turn 3 by Casey Atwood.  Atwood then rubbed against Mike Skinner, who rubbed against Harvick.  Harvick was also tapped from behind by Kyle Petty.  Harvick then spun and hit the wall head on.  Jerry Nadeau then ran into the stopped SIRIUS Dodge of Atwood.  Stacy Compton was also involved.  The crash can be seen here.

Nadeau was eliminated immediately as a result.  Harvick had to go behind the wall for extensive repairs.  He would eventually return and finish 40th, 105 laps down.  The rest of the drivers involved continued.  Burton actually ended up finishing third, but he was the only one involved in the incident that finished on the lead lap.

Kligerman Addresses Future

On Thursday during his weekly podcast "Kicking It With Kligerman," Parker Kligerman addressed the fallout from the announcement of Swan Racing's much rumored demise on Wednesday. Kligerman, who was a Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate, was left without a ride in the shuffle while his teammate Cole Whitt's No. 26 team was purchased by BK Racing and Kligerman's No. 30 team was purchased by John Cohen and Xxxtreme Motorsports.

Kligerman, who does not have a ride for this weekend's Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond says that he and Swan Racing owner Brandon Davis are still good friends and are hopeful of putting something together later on this season.

"Obviously my race team, Swan Racing, has taken a chance in this break to restructure," Kligerman said. "And by doing so they've sold the 26 team. (They've) also sold the 30 team.

"In doing all that, I obviously do not have a ride for this weekend in Richmond sadly enough. But a lot of these things are blessings in disguise. Brandon Davis and I are still good friends. I'm still under contract with Swan Racing; we're still trying to see what we can put together maybe later in the year."

Several teams have expressed interest in Kligerman's services and Kligerman said that "we are evaluating those, making sure that we don't make the wrong choice;'' Heading into this weekend's race at Richmond, Kligerman was 38th in points with a season best finish of 29th at the Daytona 500. Although out of a ride Kligerman gave Davis praise for putting the people of Swan Racing first.

"The big thing for Swan Racing and everyone involved was making sure that the employees, first and foremost, were taken care of. And in doing all the things that Brandon Davis did, in terms of selling the 26 and selling the 30, and keeping a couple of people on to help him go through the winding down of Swan Racing's assets and such, we've been able to keep everyone employed and that's what matters most.

Davis "could have walked away," he said. "Easily. (He) could have just said 'screw this, I'm out.' But he's a stand-up guy. He's stayed through it and he's worked through it with everyone else and you have to commend him (for that)."

Ryan Blaney, James Buescher Fastest in Nationwide Practice Sessions

On Thursday afternoon, the Nationwide Series held both of their practice sessions ahead of tonight's ToyotaCare 250.  Despite the fact that the race will be run at night, all of the practice was done in the heat of the day.  As a result, it is debatable just how much information can be taken from the time on track.

In the first practice session, Team Penske's Ryan Blaney was quickest with a lap of 22.055 seconds (122.421 mph).  Regan Smith was the fastest Nationwide Series regular in second, followed by Trevor Bayne, Kyle Larson and Ty Dillon.  The fastest consecutive ten-lap average was set in the session by Daniel Suarez in his first time ever driving a Nationwide car.  His best lap was only good enough for 14th quickest overall, but the other nine were within a tenth of a second of that time.

In the 90 minute final session, James Buescher in the Rheem-sponsored No. 99 was quickest with a lap of 22.169 seconds (121.792 mph).  Bayne was second, followed by James' cousin Chris Buescher in third.  Ryan Reed and Chase Elliott rounded out the top-5.  Other notables included Dylan Kwasniewski in sixth, Larson seventh, Kevin Harvick in tenth, Ty Dillon 12th, Kyle Busch 14th and Blaney 16th.

Qualifying for tonight's ToyotaCare 250 is scheduled for 3:00 PM this afternoon.  It will be aired live on ESPN 2.  Also, remember that tonight's ToyotaCare 250 will air on ESPNEWS due to ESPN's ongoing coverage of the First Round of the NBA Playoffs.

O'Donnell Addresses Sprint Cup Engine Changes

NASCAR is close to revealing an engine package for the 2015 Sprint Cup Series season that NASCAR chairman Brian France hopes will produce more lead changes and improve overall competition especially on the 1.5-mile speedways.

NASCAR Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O' Donnell said on Thursday during the Iowa Speedway Sponsor Summit that a final racing package may not be limited to just a reduction of horsepower to the engines.

"The whole package," O'Donnell said, affirming France's proclamation a few weeks ago that NASCAR would make "significant" changes as it enters a new TV contract with NBC. "Engines, downforce, aero and tires."

In an interview with the Des Moines Register, O'Donnell said that NASCAR met with teams at the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, to inform them of the direction that NASCAR is heading regarding the engine package and that the sanctioning body was in the tweaking stage of the 2015 engine package.

O'Donnell said he was hopeful that an announcement could happen as early as May 17 during NASCAR All Star Race weekend regarding the 2015 engine package.  There has been no time table set for the announcement of the 2015 racing package but O'Donnell did give some insight on how to further enhance the quality of racing.

"If you combine the aero package with that (reduction of) horsepower (and) allow some aero changes with the engines going into the corner, drivers have to get off the gas and they're able to maneuver around a little bit more," O'Donnell said. "Combine that with Goodyear and a little softer tire, now you've got the full package."

Dollar General to Sponsor Villeneuve at Indy 500

Dollar General will be the sponsor for 1995 Indianapolis 500 victor Jacques Villeneuve's Schmidt Peterson Motorsports entry in the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 25.

This will be Villeneuve's third appearance in the Indianapolis 500 and first after a 19-year absence from the race. Villeneuve has seen nothing but success at the world famous 2.5-mile oval. He earned rookie of the year honors in 1994 after finishing second to Al Unser, Jr. and went to victory lane the following year in 1995 before making the jump to Formula 1 in 1997.

Villeneuve is one of only two drivers to ever compete in the Indianapolis 500, the United States Formula 1 Grand Prix, and Brickyard 400 at the speedway. Villeneuve says he is excited to get back to Indy and compete once again in the 500.

"I have so many wonderful memories of racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway throughout my career, including my last appearance at the track in the Brickyard 400 when I also was sponsored by Dollar General," Villeneuve said. "It's been 19 years since I ran this race, but returning with a team like Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and a household-name sponsor like Dollar General is going to give me a fantastic opportunity to perform at a high level."

"We are excited to have our Dollar General brand on a car in this year's running of the Indianapolis 500, which is a great spectacle and one of the premiere events in all of sports," said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General's chairman and CEO. "This will give our brand tremendous exposure, especially if our car runs in the front of the pack and we like our chances with a respected team like Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and Jacques Villeneuve, a proven winner, behind the wheel."

Frontstretch Folio: Toyota Owners 400
by Brad Morgan

The Sprint Cup Series travels to Richmond International Raceway for the ninth race of the 2014 season on Saturday, April 26.  Television coverage of the Toyota Owners 400 begins at 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX; your local Motor Racing Network (MRN) affiliate and SiriusXM Channel 90 will handle the radio broadcast. Drivers will compete for at least 400 laps (300 miles) before the checkered flag waves.

Records and Facts

Kevin Harvick took advantage of a late decision to take on fresh tires and a green-white-checker scenario to capture a win in this race last season, his first victory of the 2013 season.

Kyle Busch leads all active drivers with four wins at RIR; five drivers, including Harvick, have three wins each.

Busch has led 586 laps over the last five spring trips to this track, making it likely that he'll eclipse the 10,000 career laps led marker during this race.  He (7.2) and Denny Hamlin (8.9) are the only actives who average better than a 10th-place finish at RIR.

They Said It:

"Richmond is always a fun race track. It drives like a mile-and-a-half, like a superspeedway, but it has little short corners. There's big, long, fast straightway and little tight corners, lots of technique to getting around." – Greg Biffle

"The same principles apply everywhere, but Richmond is unique in the fact that (turns) one and two are drastically different from three and four. There's no perfect setup. You can't just focus on that first corner or just the handling in one and two because about the time you get your car turning good down there then it's too loose down in three and four. Forward bite is always an issue. You have to have that in the back of your mind when you're thinking about where your car needs to be for the race that, 'Hey, I have to remember this thing is going to be loose in'." - Clint Bowyer

"Richmond International Raceway is pretty unique. Iowa Speedway is somewhat similar. I've been very successful at Iowa. Richmond just has less grip, you have to really focus on what your car needs for the race." – Austin Dillon

"The key for us is to get forward drive coming off of Turn 4 and to get the Quicken Loans Chevrolet to turn in the center. If you get it turning in the center, it helps the forward drive. Richmond is a fun, little short track. It's got challenges, but if you get that right, you'll be in contention for the win." – Ryan Newman

"First, it's not one of my favorite tracks; [Richmond] is my favorite track. It's the perfect-sized track for a Cup race. The other short tracks we run – Bristol and Martinsville – they're cool in their own right, but there's a lot of congestion at those two tracks. But at Richmond, it just seems like that extra quarter-mile, and that three-quarter-mile shape, and how wide the groove gets there, allows for good racing. It seems like we have to race ourselves and race the racetrack versus racing each other many times. You do have to race each other, obviously, but there are many times during the race when you have the flexibility to move around on the racetrack and try to find a spot that our Rush Truck Centers/Mobil 1 Chevy likes better than somewhere else. Many times on a short track, you don't have the flexibility. You're more narrowed down with what groove you're going to be in. It is literally the favorite track of mine on the circuit." – Tony Stewart

"I love the fact it is the Toyota Owners 400 now and not the other thing. It would mean a lot to win there. It would be very special especially being with Toyota as long as I have and seeing their growth in the sport. Any victory in the Sprint Cup series is awesome but winning with a manufacturer that has supported me for so long would be extra cool." – Brian Vickers

Brad Keselowski Racing reveals plans for May

Brad Keselowski announced earlier this week on Twitter that he will be behind the wheel of his team's No. 19 truck at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the May 16 Camping World Truck Series race. It'll mark Keselowski's first truck start of the season.

Keselowski has yet to win a race in his own trucks, despite Ryan Blaney leading the team to victory lane last year. Keselowski ran five races last season, scoring a best finish of second twice at Chicagoland Speedway and Kentucky Speedway.

Keselowski is scheduled to split the schedule this year with fellow Team Penske Sprint Cup Series teammate Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick. Reddick finished 12th at Daytona and 13th at Martinsville to start the season, and will once again be behind the wheel when the series heads to Kansas on May 9.

Brad Keselowski signed Reddick to run 15 races in 2014 after Reddick's success in the late model and K&N Pro Series ranks.

Ryan Blaney is scheduled to run the full season in the No. 29 truck for the second straight season and currently sits third in points after the first two races this season. Blaney is running the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge for Team Penske in Friday night's Nationwide Series race.

Franck Montagny to run Grand Prix of Indianapolis for Andretti Autosport

Andretti Autosport announced earlier this week that Franck Montagny will drive the No. 26 Honda-powered car for the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 10. Montagny is driving the same entry in which AA has entered into the Indianapolis 500 with Kurt Busch behind the wheel.

"I am very happy to be back with Andretti Autosport; I have already felt 'at home' during my visits," Montagny said per team press release. "Participating in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis in the temple of motorsport that is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a true moment of happiness."

Montagny made his Verizon IndyCar Series debut in 2008, finishing second at Long Beach with Forsythe/Pettit Racing. He made one star the following season with Andretti Autosport – a 20th place finish at Sonoma. The GP of Indianapolis will mark his first IndyCar start since then. The 36-year-old has four podium finishes in a dozen starts in the 24 Hours of Le-Mans.

The French driver is scheduled to take part in the open test on the 2.46-mile, 14-turn road course on April 30.

Keepin' It Short: Sizzling in the Spring
by Mike Neff

The short track racing environment in Connecticut is not what is used to be. At one time there were over 100 short tracks in the state. The vast majority of them have closed down but the three that are left are three of the most well known in the country. Waterford Speedbowl, Thompson International Speedway and Stafford Motor Speedway are the anchors of short track racing in the Northeast. Modified racing is the straw that stirs the drink in that region of the country and if you are going to make your name in asphalt Modifieds you have to go through those tracks and the drivers who compete there.

Thompson Speedway broke the ice on the Northeastern racing season with their historical Icebreaker race the first weekend of April. The following weekend Waterford Speedbowl had their Blastoff weekend to open their racing season. This weekend it is Stafford that hosts the Greatest Race in the History of Spring. The Stafford Sizzler is a full weekend of racing culminated with 200 laps of Whelen Modified Tour  This is the 43rd Annual running of this race and it has seen some of the biggest names in Modified racing hoist the trophy in Victory Lane. Ted Christopher is the all-time wins leader in the Sizzler with six victories. Mike Stefanik is second on the list with four. Three drivers are tied for third on the list with three wins. The names include Maynard Troyer, Rick Fuller and NASCAR Hall of Famer Richie Evans. Some other names that you might have heard of include Bugsy Stevens, Jimmy Spencer, Bobby Santos, Doug Coby, Geoff Bodine and Fred DeSarro.

Stafford Motor Speedway has been in existence since 1870. The track initially hosted horse racing before the popularity of auto racing boomed in the early 1900s. The horses gave way to the cars and Midgets and Sprint Cars were the mainstay. When Daytona International Speedway opened the people at Stafford jumped on board with NASCAR and they have hosted races for the sanctioning body ever since. The track held onto its dirt surface until 1967 when it was paved. Unlike many other tracks that were  switching to asphalt at the time Stafford stayed predominantly flat. The low banking puts a premium on driver ability and handling rather than hammering down on a banked track. Stafford is poised to entertain racing fans for years to come. The track was repaved in 1997 and also installed a Musco lighting system and Bose sound system to set it up as a premier short track in the country.

Friday at Stafford will include practice for all divisions, and there is no shortage of types of cars that will take to the track this weekend. Saturday will see heat races for all of the divisions and the features for the DARE Stocks, Limited Late Models, SK Modifieds, and Northeast Mini Stocks. Qualifying for the Whelen Modifieds begins at 2:30 on Saturday and the heats and features will follow from there. Sunday the action starts up at 11:00 AM with the NAPA Pit Party. The prerace for the Sizzler kicks off at 12:15 and the first feature of the day is the SK Modifieds at 1:00. The Late Models will roll off when the SK Modifieds are completed. Then, at approximately 3:15, the 43rd Annual Sizzler hits the track for 200 laps of action.

General Admission tickets for adults are $38 and kids(6-14) are $5. Reserved seats for anyone are $42. The grandstands are open on Friday and admission is free. Tickets are good for admission for both Saturday and Sunday. If you are anywhere near Stafford Motor Speedway this weekend you need to take in the Greatest Race in the History of Spring.

Q:
In the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 400, Jeff Gordon claimed the pole and led early on in another strong run for the DuPont Chevrolet.  However, he didn't get very far into the race before disaster struck.  What happened?

A: Gordon had slipped back to third and was battling Sterling Marlin in order to hold onto the position when the two drivers came together in turn three.  Gordon, carrying a special Chromallusion paint scheme featuring Bugs Bunny, spun and backed into the wall.  The crash can be seen here.

Gordon was unhurt and drove his car back to the garage for extensive repairs.  Gordon would eventually rejoin the race and finish in 36th, 117 laps down.
