msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Sep 02 11:28PM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-04-27,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Five Guys Named Moe, and

* Game 2, Round 4 - Geography - World Leaders Behaving Badly

Bad behavior is not limited to any one continent. Given the country and
a brief description of some of their antics, name the current world leader
who has been known to generate many unflattering news headlines.

1. His first name might mean "freedom" in Swahili and he may
be the son of Kenya's founding father, but he is also the
first person to be charged with crimes against humanity and
face the International Criminal Court while still serving as
a head of state. The charges were withdrawn in December 2014
after his government refused to hand over information considered
vital to the case. Give *both* names of this world leader.

2. Nicknamed "Sweet Micky", this musician became the 56th president
of Haiti in 2011. Since then, he has been accused of accepting
over $2,600,000,000 in bribes and has been the target of
large-scale demonstrations demanding his resignation. Name him.

3. This leader of Syria has long been thought to be providing
support to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS) fighters. Concerned about
negative press, he and his wife hired a public relations firm
and began a social media campaign to bolster their image.
Despite friendly Facebook images, his legacy will be the 27,000
photographs of torture that were smuggled out of the country in
October 2014 and displayed at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Name the leader.

4. This current prime minister of Australia is more prone to gaffes
than to torture. In 2010, he claimed to be "a bit threatened by
homosexuals" and in 2014 was filmed winking and smirking during a
phone call from a sex trade worker. He has referred to climate
change as "crap" and has said that "virginity is the greatest
gift you can give someone". Name this colorful world leader.

5. President of Bolivia since 2006, this world leader has been
revered by indigenous people for his policies, but has had a
difficult relationship with the US, expelling their ambassador
and USAID, and suspending DEA operations. Name this leader.

6. Recently implicated in the suspicious death of a federal
prosecutor, this president of Argentina was named in a draft
arrest warrant found in the prosecutor's wastebasket. Other
accusations include corruption, crony capitalism, and harassment
of Argentina's independent media. Name this world leader.

7. President of Zimbabwe since 1987, this granddaddy of bad behavior
has been accused of economic mismanagement, corruption, and
brutal repression. When the 2008 election was proving to be
too close, he suspended the rules and declared himself president
once again. Name this leader.

8. An invitation by US House Speaker John Boehner for this prime
minister to address Congress caused controversy in March 2015.
President Obama decided to sit out the speech, citing his policy
of not inviting leaders close to their country's election.
Name this controversial leader.

9. South Africa's current president has faced significant legal
challenges. He was charged with rape in 2005, but was acquitted.
In addition, he fought a long legal battle over allegations of
racketeering and corruption. Charges, however, were dropped
in 2009 amid claims of political interference. Name this
world leader.

10. In 1998, this President of Nicaragua was accused of sexual
assault by his adopted stepdaughter; after 4 years the case
was settled without a trial. He also changed the constitution
so he could run for a second term. Name this world leader,
once a leader of the Sandinista National Liberation Front.

* Game 2, Round 6 - Entertainment - "The Daily Show"

In February, Jon Stewart announced that he will be leaving
"The Daily Show". Insomniacs and political junkies across North
America are inconsolable. 10 questions on the man, the show,
the phenomenon.

1. It wasn't always "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart". Name the
original host of the show, who Stewart took over from in
January 1999.

2. After a 5-year stint on the show, this comedian has gone on
to win a Golden Globe for his performance in "The Office" and
was nominated for an Oscar this year for his portrayal of John
du Pont in "Foxcatcher". Name him.

3. Another successful alumnus, he is the author of "I Am America
(And So Can You!)", and once considered running for President
of the United States of South Carolina. Name this satiric
comedian who is to take over hosting duties for "The Late Show"
from David Letterman.

4. This Canadian married couple were long-time correspondents on
the show, but both announced they were leaving in March to
pursue projects with TBS. Interviews with him have landed an
opposition leader in a Moscow jail and a "Newsweek" journalist
(Maziar Bahari) in a Tehran jail. She is known for the "This
Week in God" segment and was the longest-serving correspondent,
surpassing <answer 3> in 2012. Name *either*.

5. Starting in June 2013, Jon Stewart took a 12-week break to direct
a drama about Bahari, who was jailed by Iran for 4 months
following that 2009 interview. Iranian authorities presented
the interview as evidence that he was in communication with an
American spy. Name the 2014 film starring Gael García Bernal.

6. Taking over the hosting duties during that absence of Stewart's,
this British comedian did such a great job that he landed his own
show, "Last Week Tonight", on HBO. He has been widely praised
for his comedic investigations into serious topics such as net
neutrality and income inequality, as well as a recent interview
in Moscow with Edward Snowden. Name him.

7. This comedian, who joined the show in 2006 as the "Senior Black
Correspondent", now hosts "The Nightly Show", which airs after
"The Daily Show" and replaces "The Colbert Report". Name him.

8. What is the name of the closing segment which features a humorous
clip with no commentary, or sometimes a tribute to someone who
recently died?

9. Name either the broadcast network or the cable station which airs
"The Daily Show" in Canada.

10. Name the South African comedian who has been named as Stewart's
replacement. While relatively unknown in North America, he
has experience as a late-night-show host in his home country.
Much of his humor comes from his life story as the biracial
product of a black Xhosa mother and a white Swiss father --
something that was illegal under apartheid.

Mark Brader:

> 1. Negotiations for a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather

> which NBA team?

> 3. What weight class will the fight be fought in?

Welterweight. 4 for Dan Tilque, Gareth, and Pete.

> 4. Which Las Vegas hotel will host the fight?

MGM Grand. I scored "MGM" as almost correct. 4 for Joshua,
Dan Tilque, and Gareth. 3 for Peter.

> 5. In addition to "Ring" magazine's <answer 3> title, titles from
> three of boxing's sanctioning organizations will be on the line.

Organization. 4 for Joshua, Peter, Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, Gareth,
and Pete.

> 6. Pacquiao and Mayweather are contracted to different US pay
> cable networks which have partnered to broadcast the fight.
> Name either of the pay cable networks.

HBO, Showtime. 4 for Joshua, Peter, Gareth, and Pete.

> price that will make it the most expensive pay-per-view boxing
> event ever. To the nearest whole dollar and within $10, what
> is the suggested retail price in US dollars?

$90 (it was $89.95, to be exact; accepting $80-$100). 4 for Dan Blum
(the hard way) and Pete. 2 for Joshua.

> 8. Boxers often have many nicknames. Mayweather is known as
> "Pretty Boy", "TBE" ("The Best Ever"), and "Money". Pacquiao
> also has quite a few nicknames. Name any.

Pac-Man; Ang Pambansang Kamao (The Nation's Fist); The Mexicutioner;
The Destroyer; Fighting Pride of the Philippines; Pambansang Ninong
(National Godfather); The Fighting Congressman; The Filipino Slugger.
But as Gareth also pointed out along with giving one of those answers,
"Manny" is itself a nickname (for "Emmanuel")! 4 for Gareth, anyway.

> magazine's best pound-for-pound fighter in 2000 and 2001.
> He lost unanimous decisions to Mayweather in 2010 and Pacquiao
> in 2011. Name him.

Shane Mosely. 4 for Joshua, Peter, and Gareth.

> the Year in 1995, and their top-rated pound-for-pound fighter in
> the world in 1997 and 1998. In 2007 he lost a split decision to
> Mayweather, and in 2008 Pacquiao defeated him by TKO. Name him.

Oscar De La Hoya. 4 for Joshua.

> Canadian citizens every year after taking the citizenship test.
> Here are 10 questions taken from the citizenship-test study guide,
> "Discover Canada".

See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/pub/discover.pdf

> *Note that only the answers given in this document will be
> acceptable!*

The last sentence was not present in the preamble of the original
game, but I added it in order to make question and answer 10
acceptable.

> 1. Name the only officially bilingual province in Canada.

New Brunswick. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, and Björn.

> journey on foot to warn Lt. James FitzGibbon of a planned
> American attack. Her bravery contributed to victory at the
> Battle of Beaver Dams. Name her.

Laura Secord. 4 for Dan Blum.

> 3. Which African city was established for freed slaves by black
> Nova Scotian Loyalists in 1792?

Freetown (Sierra Leone). 4 for Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, Björn, and Pete.

> 4. In 1916, which was the first province to grant voting rights
> to women?

Manitoba. 3 for Dan Blum and Marc.

> 5. Who was the founder of women's suffrage movement as well as
> the first woman to practice medicine in Canada?

Dr. Emily Stowe.

> 6. In 1921, who became Canada's first woman Member of Parliament?

Agnes Macphail.

> 7. Give *either* name of the army raised by Canada to fight in
> the First World War.

Canadian Expeditionary Force, Canadian Corps. One of the complete
names was required. 4 for Dan Tilque and Dan Blum.

> 8. In 1847-48, what was the first British North American colony
> to attain full responsible government?

Nova Scotia. 4 for Dan Tilque. 2 for Dan Blum.

> 9. In 1849, who became the first head of a responsible government
> in the Province of Canada?

Sir Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine.

He was joint premier with Robert Baldwin, but "Discover Canada"
mentions Baldwin only as another of the politicians who worked to
establish responsible government, so only the answer La Fontaine is
acceptable. Baldwin was accepted on protest in the original game,
but as noted above, its preamble did not include the note limiting
answers to those in that document.

> 10. On 1867-07-01, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia
> together formed a new country. Name this country formed under
> the British North America Act.

Dominion of Canada. The full phrase was required. 4 for Joshua,
Dan Tilque, Gareth, and Marc.

As I explained in connection with Rotating Quiz 179, the actual
correct answer is just "Canada"; the author of the guide is evidently
living in one of those previous decades when people acted as if that
was just a short form of a supposed full name "Dominion of Canada".

Scores, if there are no errors:

GAME 2 ROUNDS-> 2 3 TOTALS
