They Said It:

"California is a pretty straightforward race track that doesn't have a lot of grip. It's got a few bumps here and there and it's important to dodge the seams. So you kind of know going into it what you need to be a contender at California. I enjoy it. It's a neat racetrack and there's certainly no race track similar to it on our circuit since they've repaved Michigan. You've got some bugs to work out there on Friday and Saturday, but it's a fun place to race." - David Ragan

"It should be a fun race. To be good there though you have to be able to roll into the corner and drive through it right up against the wall. There's always some good three-wide racing and last year we had our PEAK Toyota in position in the closing laps –like nearly won the darn thing but just had a tire go down with a lap to go. Excited to go back though and see if we can close the deal this time." - Clint Bowyer

"I really like this place. There are plenty of drivable grooves, lots of racing room. And with the way restarts play out, if you're on the lead lap and catch a late restart, you've got a shot to make up a lot of ground." - Michael Annett

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: In 2001, then-Roush Racing was forced to make a last-minute driver change prior to the then-Craftsman Truck Series' Auto Club 200 at California Speedway.  West Coast racer Tim Woods was put in the No. 99 for the race, replacing Kyle Busch.  Why was this move made?

Check back Friday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: Today, more than likely, a driver could not pull this off, but in 2002, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. successfully hid a concussion that he suffered at then-California Speedway.  How did he get what turned out to be his first of several concussions?

A: Earnhardt Jr. was driving in the lower groove, minding his own business, when Kevin Harvick developed a tire rub.  Harvick turned down to try to get to pit road and managed to hook Earnhardt Jr. in the right rear.  Earnhardt Jr.'s Budweiser Chevrolet turned right and went hard into the outside wall. Harvick also slid into the outside wall, but didn't hit as hard as Earnhardt Jr.  The crash can be seen here.  Earnhardt Jr. was clearly sore once he exited his car and, for lack of better words, staggered to the ambulance.
