- Tonight, the Nationwide Series is back in action at Texas Motor Speedway in the O'Reilly Auto Parts 300.  In addition, Formula One teams are practicing at the Bahrain International Circuit, where Turn 1 has been renamed after Michael Schumacher.  Finally, we have two hours of practice for Sprint Cup teams.

Michael Schumacher Showing Signs Of Awakeness, Consciousness

Early this morning, a statement was released from Sabine Kehm, Michael Schumacher's manager, in order to update the condition of the seven-time World Champion. Schumacher has been in an induced coma, for more than three months while recovering from blood clots to his brain.

"Michael is making progress," the statement begins.  "He shows moments of consciousness and awakening. We are at his side during his long and difficult fight, together with the team at the hospital in Grenoble (France), and we keep remaining confident."

The injuries were suffered after Schumacher hit his head on a rock while skiing December 29th. Information since has been hard to come by, although Kehm makes it clear more specifics won't be divulged anytime soon.

"We would like to thank you all for the continuing sympathies," Kehm's statement continued. "At the same time, we again ask for understanding that we do not intend to disclose details. This is necessary to protect the privacy of Michael and his family, and to enable the medical team to work in full calmness."

Generally, the report is seen as good news.  There were several experts who had publicly stated the chances of Schumacher reawakening, at this point had lessened considerably. Meanwhile, as the F1 circuit descends on Bahrain it was announced Turn 1 was named after one of their sport's biggest stars while the prolonged recovery continues.

Ty Dillon Tops Nationwide Practice Sessions at Texas

On Thursday, Texas Motor Speedway opened up their gates for the Nationwide Series teams to hold their two practice sessions ahead of tonight's O'Reilly Auto Parts 300.  The same driver topped the charts in both those sessions.

Ty Dillon, driving the WESCO Chevrolet headed up both sessions.  Dillon's lap of 29.916 seconds (180.505 mph) headed up the first session, held in the afternoon.  Kyle Busch was second, followed by Trevor Bayne, Ryan Blaney and Chris Buescher.

Dillon's lap of 29.940 seconds (180.361 mph) was quickest in the abbreviated Happy Hour session.  He was the only driver to dip down into the 29-second bracket.  Regan Smith was second quickest, followed by Chris Buescher, Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch.

The second session was delayed and eventually cut short due to severe weather.  One explosive cell generated at bare minimum a reported funnel cloud and hail the size of eggs.  That particular thunderstorm passed to the north of the track and had a Tornado Warning attached to it.  A separate squall line brought the session to an early end.

Kligerman and SMS Audio to Team Up for Texas

Parker Kligerman's No. 30 Toyota Camry will be sporting a new look for this weekend's Duck Commander 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. On Thursday, Swan Racing announced that Kligerman's car will feature an SMS Audio / Klarbrunn Vita paint scheme for this weekend's race in the Lone Star State.

SMS Audio is an American electronics manufacturer of audio products founded by multi-time award-winning singer, songwriter, and actor Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. The company signed a two-year deal with Swan Racing prior to the 2014 season. 

“Riding with 50 Cent might be just the thing the No. 30 needs to have a break out race at Texas Motor Speedway,” said Kligerman. “I’m excited that both SMS Audio and Vita Ice will be prominently displayed on the car - it looks great."

Kligerman made his Sprint Cup Series debut in last November's AAA Texas 500, where he finished 18th for Swan Racing. That audition earned him the full-time ride with the team for 2014.

Haas Believed to be Given Go Ahead for F1 Next Season

On Thursday, F1's President and CEO Bernie Ecclestone said he believes Gene Haas' bid to have an F1 team will be approved for next season. Haas' team would be the 12th full-time Formula 1 team on the grid and the first American-based F1 team since the 1980s. F1 has not seen an American driver since 2007, when Scott Speed drove for Toro Rosso.

Haas is the co-owner of one of NASCAR's powerhouse teams, Stewart-Haas Racing, with three-time Cup Series champion Tony Stewart. In addition to NASCAR, Haas also leads American engineering powerhouse Haas Automation, a company which generates yearly revenues in upwards of $1 billion dollars. Haas is already using his resources at hand to attract top personnel for his venture into F1 such as Gunther Steiner, a former technical director of four-time F1 world champion Red Bull Racing.

When asked about Haas' bid, Ecclestone was optimistic. "I think Haas will be accepted," he said. "They have got the money, but it's a question of whether they are going to spend it."

In December, Formula One's governing body FIA opened tender for a new team, but no decision was reached by the February 28th deadline. Haas ultimately believes the decision will come down to their leader.

"They get together in a group," he said. "Look at the package and they make their decision, but ultimately I think it has to go to Mr. Ecclestone."

IndyCar Renews at Long Beach Through 2018

The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported on Thursday that IndyCar's contract with the legendary 1.968-mile street course will be extended through the year 2018, with confirmation of the deal expected in the coming weeks. Reports initially surfaced that Formula One was interested in racing on the 11-turn street course, but the new deal with IndyCar makes it seem likely that F1 will have to wait until the new IndyCar contract expires.

However the door is not completely closed for the future of F1 at Long Beach. A bidding process will be opened up to potentially include a future date at the track.

“This is precisely what we wanted,” IndyCar’s Long Beach race chief Jim Michaelian said. “They [the city] have every right to explore other options, but by the same token, we have the certainty of conducting the event through 2018. That’s important because we have lots of sponsorship agreements.”

F1's Long Beach founder Chris Pook welcomed the news of a potential F1 date in the future.

“I’m not knocking the IndyCar race,” Pook said, “but Formula One will bring the economic value the city enjoys.”

Keepin' It Short: Bringing Local Racing to the Masses

The constant battle for local track promoters is putting butts in the seats. Getting enough cars to put on a good show, running an efficient event, and providing a clean and safe environment, one that allows the whole family to enjoy it live is just part of the challenge. Promoters also have to deal with other events and activities that can pull fans away from their venue. The challenge of getting their product in front of as many fans as possible is a never-ending battle, with more and more difficulties popping up every day thanks to the electronic information age.

The dilemma that many of them are still struggling to come to grips with is whether to offer online streaming of events. For several years, there has been a growing number of online sources for streaming video of races. The quality of the broadcasts has increased dramatically as the cost of HD equipment has come down tremendously. There are multiple options, from pay-per-view to subscriptions and free offerings, but the difficulty for the providers is convincing promoters that they won't chase fans away from the racetrack by presenting an online offering.

Fortunately, there are more and more promoters who have come to the realization that fans who want to come to the racetrack for an event are going to show up whether there is an online option or not. One of the latest additions is Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. They have partnered with XSAN to broadcast all their race cards this season, including the prestigious All-American 400. For $20.00, fans can watch the entire first race date at the Fairgrounds Speedway.

NASCAR fans have already heard about new offerings from NASCAR Home Tracks. FansChoice TV is going to show races from the K&N Series, several NASCAR-sanctioned tracks, AMA Motorcycles and IMSA. Fans can watch races for free from tracks like Langley Speedway, Evergreen Speedway and Lake County Speedway. Hopefully, the fans will be excited enough about the action at those tracks to eventually make a trip to check them out in person. It will also expose fans to the stars at the local tracks as they work their way up to the national levels.

The key to a successful online offering is that the promoter sees a financial gain over the long haul. Whether it is a pay-per-view that immediately puts money in their pockets or a free offering that puts butts in the seats at a later date, it is important that fans let the promoters know they appreciate the offering and support the tracks who bring races to them over the Internet.

The other point for fans is to realize that the pay-per-view offerings that cost as much or slightly more than a ticket to the event is a deal. If a fan is hundreds of miles from the track, they can now watch the race on their device. They don't have to pay for the gas to drive to the track or other expenditures involved with a race day. Spending the $25 to buy a pay-per-view of a race, in comparison to a $20 ticket is cheaper in the long run.

So whether it is XSAN, FansChoice TV, DirtVision or PASS TV, support the promoters who bring races to you over the Internet. In the end, it is going to bring more race offerings to fans' living rooms and handheld devices. If the broadcasts are successes, they will help build the fan bases and series to a point where fans can watch local short track racing all of the time.

Frontstretch Folio: Duck Commander 500

The Sprint Cup Series travels to Texas Motor Speedway for the seventh race of the 2014 season on Sunday, April 6. Television coverage of the Duck Commander 500 begins at 3 PM ET on FOX; your local Performance Racing Network (PRN) affiliate or SiriusXM Radio Channel 90 will have the radio broadcast. Drivers will compete for at least 334 laps (501 miles) before the checkered flag waves.

Records and Facts

Kyle Busch fired off the six shooters after a victory in this race last season. He got around Martin Truex, Jr. with a near-perfect final pit stop and held the lead for the final 19 laps.  

Busch started from the pole en route to his first TMS victory, after setting the current qualifying record of 196.299 mph in preparation.

Joe Nemechek leads active drivers with 23 starts at TMS without visiting Victory Lane. He will get another shot this weekend with the No. 66 team.

Jeff Burton remains the only NSCS driver to have won at TMS in two different manufacturers: Ford and Chevrolet.

I believe the tire we’ll be using this weekend comes from the same family as what we had at Fontana a few weeks back. We’re going to be taking the bumps at a much higher rate of speed with a lot more load on the left-side tires than we’ve had there before. So, I think we’re going to see some new challenges pop up. We’re still trying to get our arms around everything because there are so many new things to understand. Texas is the first racetrack that’s similar to a track we’ve raced at already, so it’ll be an interesting race.” – Kevin Harvick

“Texas Motor Speedway is a good track race-wise. It provides drivers with many options. You can move around, find a line that your car responds to and it's versatile so you can get around somebody. It's also fast - really fast - so aero is also an important part of it and it's nice to have that ability to move around. With it being one of the older tracks on the circuit, asphalt-wise, the racing will be good for both the drivers and the fans watching in the stands and on television.” – Ryan Newman

“The entry and exit of [Turns 1 and 2] are very abrupt as far as the banking. When you turn in the corner, it’s very abrupt getting in and falls off very quickly. The reason for that, when they built Texas Motor Speedway, they intended to have the Indy cars race on the apron. That’s why the apron is so wide at Texas. The Indy cars were not originally meant to run on the banking. That’s why the banking on the entry of the corner and exit falls off so fast, so the cars could come from the straightaway from the apron and back up with a smooth transition from the bottom. It makes it a different challenge than what we have at Charlotte or Atlanta because of that. It does make it a lot more challenging to get your car set up for it. A lot of times, it’s hard to get your car secure on the entry because you don’t have that banking to hold it.” – Tony Stewart

RPM To Raise Autism Awareness With Decals

All the cars from Richard Petty Motorsports will feature a decal for Autism Awareness the entire month of April. Trent Owens, crew chief for the No. 43 team, has a six-year-old son who was diagnosed with autism at one-and-a-half.

"It's a very important month personally with having a son with autism,” Owens explained. “It's a disease that's hard to understand, and it's very difficult from the side of getting therapies and getting help. Every autistic child is completely different, so just to have that awareness to the general public in the past few years for the month of April has been good."

According to Owens, "one in 68 kids" are diagnosed with some form of autism. RPM will have the decals all month on the Nos. 9 and 43, driven by Marcos Ambrose and Aric Almirola, respectively in the Cup Series and on Dakoda Armstrong's No. 43 Nationwide Series ride.

Jimmy John's, Chicagoland Speedway Partner

Chicagoland Speedway announced earlier this week that Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches will sponsor September's Nationwide Series event at the facility. The Jimmy Johns Freaky Fast 300 will run Saturday, September 13th.

“NASCAR is Freaky Fast, just like Jimmy John’s,” said Jimmy John Liautaud, CEO and founder of Jimmy John's.  “Having Chicagoland Speedway in our own backyard just makes perfect sense for this partnership. We are stoked to sponsor the Jimmy John’s Freaky Fast 300 powered by Coca-Cola at Chicagoland Speedway.”

Tickets for the event start at $40 and tickets for children under 12 will receive a $25 discount off of the adult prices in each section.

Q: Mark Martin emerged victorious in the 2000 Albertson's 300 at Texas Motor Speedway.  However, only footage of the first 30 or so laps exists of the race, despite CBS televising the event.  What happened?

Thursday's Answer:

Q: In the 1998 Pronto Auto Parts 400k, Jack Sprague dominated much of the proceedings, leading 96 of 167 laps.  However, he was taken out of contention with a little more than 30 laps to go.  What happened?

A: Sprague was leading the race when he and Greg Biffle ran up on the lapped truck of Rob Morgan.  Sprague was forced to lift.  When that happened, Biffle ended up getting in the back of Sprague, sending the No. 24 on a wild ride through the grass.  This ride included a sideways jump over Turns 3 and 4 of the quarter-mile Legends track.  The incident can be seen here.

Sprague was uninjured and continued.  However, the damage to his front air dam hurt the aerodynamics of his No. 24.  Sprague ended up finishing sixth.
