Duck Commander 500 Rained Out

Sunday was supposed to be a duckstravaganza at Texas Motor Speedway for the Sprint Cup Series on Sunday.  A good chunk of the Robertson family was on-site as race sponsors (via the family business, Duck Commander) and fun was sure to be had.

However, the weather had other plans.  Sunday dawned gray and wet in Denton County.  While it was nothing like the heavy rains and thunderstorms that marred Nationwide Series Practice on Thursday, it was enough to delay the proceedings.  The rain did stop around 3:30 in the afternoon, but temperatures that hovered around 50 degrees (unseasonably cool for Northern Texas in early April) and humid air made it very difficult to dry the 1.5 mile quad-oval.

Then, there were the weepers, the dreaded cracks in the track surface where water can seep onto the track and run down the banking.  Track crews, aided by both generations of the Air Titan, worked feverishly to get rid of the weepers, but once more showers moved in around 6:00pm local time, NASCAR officially called off the proceedings for the day.

The race has been rescheduled for 11am local time (12 Noon EDT) today.  Coverage of the race will start with a half hour pre-race show on FOX Sports 1 starting at 11:30am EDT.  At Noon, the coverage will move to FOX and immediately jump into the truncated version of opening ceremonies (the regularly-scheduled version did run as planned Sunday).

Chase Elliott Holds Off Sprint Cup Stars, Wins First Career Nationwide Race

Nationwide Series Rookie Chase Elliott passed Kevin Harvick with 15 laps to go and pulled away from a group of Sprint Cup Series stars to win Friday night's O'Reilly Auto Parts 300.  It was Elliott's first career Nationwide Series victory in just his sixth career start, and the second win in six races this season for Nationwide Series regulars.

Kyle Busch finished second after failing pre-qualifying technical inspection and starting at the rear of the field for the second race in a row.  Kyle Larson, who had a similar predicament to Busch, finished third.  JR Motorsports teammates Harvick and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. rounded out the top-5.

With the win, Elliott has taken the points lead by just two markers over teammate Regan Smith.  For more on Friday night's action, check out Kelly Crandall's Nationwide Breakdown.

Austin Dillon Sick Saturday; Back to 100 Percent for Race

On Saturday, Austin Dillon appeared to be sick with "flu-like symptoms" at Texas Motor Speedway.  As a result, Austin's younger brother Ty was summoned to help practice Austin's Dow Chemical Chevrolet during Final Practice.  Ty was not very fast in the car, turning in laps in the 30 second bracket while Austin's best lap was in the high 28's.  There was the chance that Ty could qualify the car for Austin, forcing Austin to start at the rear of the field.  However, Austin qualified the car himself in 20th

On Sunday, Austin appeared to be much better after a trip to the Infield Care Center, where the health care professionals there "hooked him up."  He should be able to go all 500 miles today.

Tires Once Again An Issue

Much like the last time the Sprint Cup Series traveled to an intermediate track, tires will likely be an issue today, just like many drivers have feared.  NASCAR has stated that they will not police Goodyear's minimum tire pressure recommendations,

There has already been one notable tire failure in Sprint Cup practice this weekend, but that did not appear to be caused by wear.  Kurt Busch's crash on Friday was triggered by a brand-new left rear tire being cut down.  He'll be starting his backup car in 11th today.

In an attempt to ward off potential tire issues this weekend, Goodyear brought their dual zone tire design to Texas for the first time.  However, the dual zone tire is only on the right side of the car.  The left side tires are the same left sides that have been at Texas for the last two years.  So far, the results are mediocre at best.  Friday night's O'Reilly Auto Parts 300 saw excessive wear from right side tires and a number of tire failures.  Two of these failures caused cautions.  Full fuel runs saw some terrible looking tires off some cars, while others were ok.

Even if the Duck Commander 500 had gone off as planned Sunday, NASCAR was planning on throwing a Competition Caution at Lap 30 to check tire wear.  That is still in the plans for today, but may be even more important with no rubber on the track.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q:
Here's an easy one. Davey Allison entered the 1992 Mountain Dew Southern 500 with a chance to become the second driver to win the Winston Million.  The caution came out for rain with a little over 70 laps to go.  Drivers needed fuel and tires in order to make a stretch run to the finish, but weather created an opportunity for Darrell Waltrip to skip the stop and earn his 84th and final Winston Cup victory.  Back then, only NASCAR had access to a radar and they kept it at their "Big Red Truck." Teams would send a crewmember to the truck to take a look and gauge their strategy based on what they saw.  What did Allison's crewmember reportedly say about the radar?

Friday's Answer:
Q:
Mark Martin emerged victorious in the 2000 Albertson's 300 at Texas Motor Speedway.  However, only footage of the first 30 or so laps exists of the race, despite CBS televising the event.  What happened?

A:  Much like Sunday, rains showed up early and often, triggering a long rain delay.  CBS promised that if the race resumed, it would resume on TNN, much like the previous year.  However, while viewers were watching shows such as RollerJam, a different plan was afoot.  It seems that the production staff was convinced that the race would be postponed, so basically everyone got sent back to their hotels.  That didn't come to pass.  Yes, the race restarted, but it was well after dark.  A lone camera was left running on the roof of the broadcast booth.  Clips from that camera ran the next day during the broadcast of the DirecTV 500 on CBS.
