I'd say Lake Titicaca, although in a recent quiz it qualified as
the second largest. But as Dan said, Maracaibo is *historically* a lake.

I will score this as one answer, Titicaca.

That's a surprise. After posting my guess, I googled or wikipediaed
it or something, and the answer I found was also 393. I hadn't
remembered the exact year, but I did assume it was well known.

In fact it turns out not to be accurately known at all. Just another
reminder of how spotty our knowledge of ancient times really is.

First, you earlier said you were using an Olympic source -- here's one
of those that agrees with Jeopardy!:

http://www.olympic.org/Documents/Reference_documents_Factsheets/The_Olympic_Games_of_the_Antiquity.pdf

Second, have a look at this page:

http://www.roger-pearse.com/weblog/2012/08/04/when-were-the-olympic-games-abolished/

I was curious enough to do a Google search like

olympics abolished 391..395

(I think that's exactly what I typed, but I'm not sure now) and scan the
result summaries for the first 50 hits. One of them was Roger Pearse's
page cited above, and a few others were irrelevant hits or the summaries
did not give a date. But of the ones that did give a date, the votes were:

1 391
3 392
32 393
2 "about" or "around" 393
1 "393 or 394"
6 394

> yet another off by 1 error. you know the kind. :-)

If not more.

There is also disagreement as to which Theodosius it was.

150 - Pete
394 - *** Correct Answer ***
401 - Mark Brader
472 - Dan Tilque

There is some doubt about the exact year, but most say 392-394. See Mark Brader's other post for more details.

Pete is eliminated.

and then there were 2.

Which in turn reminds me of a long-ago series of TV commercials for a
drink called Hawaiian Punch <http://www.hawaiianpunch.com>. Each one
would end with this cartoon character asking the question that appears
in this image:

The other person would say "Sure", and, of course, he'd punch them.

This contest is now open to Mark Brader and Dan Tilque.

You have 72 hours to answer, however a nor'easter is heading this way and I may not be able to get online after it hits later tonight. So if you are able to enter sooner, please do so. I will check regularly for your answers while I
am able. (Just to be clear, we are expecting to lose power completely in the
next 24 hours and to not get it back for several days. I am really hopeful that
they are wrong in their predictions, but I have prepared for the worst.)

For the final round, I have 2 questions. The 2nd question is the tie breaker and will *not* be used if there is a clear victor based on just the 1st question.
This is what happens when I randomize the questions and an easy one ends up
near the bottom.

***
#11. Bernard L. Madoff was sentenced to the maximum time in prison for his Ponzi
Scheme crimes. How many years did Bernie get?
***

tie breaker
***
#12. The Tonight Show has had numerous hosts since it debuted in September
1954, the most famous of which was Johnny Carson. How many episodes did
he host?
***

swp

p.s. the unused question on the slate follows, enter for fun if you like:
#13. Mount Wai'ale'ale in Hawaii had a record rainfall in 1982. How many inches?
