That's probably for the best.

The thing is, immediately after posting my answer and before reading any
of the rest of the thread, I looked up the actual answer on Wikipedia.
So I couldn't have fairly posted a corrected answer, anyway. If you'd
made a post with a subject line like "READ THIS BEFORE ANSWERING", then
things may heve been different.

BTW, I got my answer by assuming you meant all kinds of bridges and I
knew the Golden Gate Bridge has a main span of around 4000 ft. I guessed
bridge making technology had managed to about double that distance in
the 70-odd years since it was built, so I guessed a number in that range.

Bridge engineering is not one my prime subjects, but truss bridges are
fairly common constructions, and I guess building long such bridges is
no big deal if the water is shallow enough. Ponte Vasco da Gama in Lisbon
is 17.5 km. Wikipedia has it as cable-stayed, but that is only a shorter
passage close to one of the landings.

I guess what migh excite some people is exactly the continuity - how much
you permit to expand for temperature.

Anyway, it seems that Stephen has followed my advice and posted a
replacement question, so we can let this one lie.

modern multi-span road bridges, it's a concrete beam bridge.

Hmm. There is a problem with this one too. The figure I remember
seeing is something like 210,000 ft^3/sec, which (since 10 ft = 3 m,
near enough) is 210*27 = 5,670 m^3/s.

But I think that's what the flow *would be* if 1/2 (summer daytime)
or 3/4 (other times) of it wasn't diverted for power generation, as
I mentioned in that old RQ recently. If "summer" is half the year,
"daytime" is half the day, and the river flows at the same rate in
"summer" and "winter", then this means the average flow rate actually
going over the falls is 1/2 * 1/4 + 1/4 * 3/4 = 5/16 of the natural
rate.

So I'll go with the Articles of Confederation answer

The Wikipedia article in this case appears reasonably comprehensive,
although I did not check it to make sure it was consistent. (I note
they claim that only 10% of the flow is used for power, but that the
rate is made lower at night for other reasons.)

Not a big deal, but I said "shift-working". Yes, I did not add "night",
so that could mean people who work 6-14 one week and 12-20 another.

Then again, several entrants say "working night shifts" which could
imply you only work the night shifts. As I recall the report, what
was really horrible was when you had different shifts different weeks.
Then again, I guess no one works only night shifts.

Anyway, the reason I did not include "night" is that for me "shift"
implies that there is night work going.
