Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 6 updates in 2 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): May 02 05:58PM

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2014-03-10,
and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
by members of the Cellar Rats, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. I will reveal the correct
answers in about 3 days.

For further information, including an explanation of the """
notation that may appear in these rounds, see my 2022-09-09
companion posting on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (RQFTCI*)".

* Game 8, Round 4 - Sports - Boating

1. A small flag, typically triangular, flown from the mast or
from the deck of a powerboat to indicate yacht club membership
is called what?

2. A short rope used for fastening something or securing rigging,
or a cord worn around the neck for carrying something (such as
a whistle) is called what?

3. What is the term for a rope or line used to raise a sail or
a spar?

4. Give the name for a large winch with a vertical axis, often
crank-operated, most often used to wind in anchors.

5. What is the speed of 1 nautical mile per hour called?

6. What is the name given to a special type of sail flown from
the bow of a sailboat when sailing downwind? It fills with
air similarly to a parachute, and is also often called a kite
or a chute.

7. This type of boat (either outboard or stern drive and typically
16-24 feet [5-7.5 m]) has U- or V-shaped bench-type seating in
front of the operator. It usually has a walk-through to the
bow via a hinged section of windshield. What is it called?

8. Usually a high-powered outboard, this V-hulled, low-freeboard
style of boat has a flat deck (except for where the operator
sits) for fishermen to walk on, with built-in wells to keep
bait and live fish. What is the name given to this popular
style of boat?

9. Which term describes a boat which, when speed increases,
rises above the water supported by winglike blades in the water,
greatly increasing efficiency? The inventor, Alexander Graham
Bell, experimented with this type of boat and a craft of his
design held the world marine speed record for 10 years.

10. Stern drive, also called inboard/outboard drive, for power
boats was introduced commercially at the New York Power Boat
Show in what year? Answer within 3 years.

Sugar. Dan Tilque got this.

This was the easiest round in the original game.

If I'd written the question, I would've said "was released in 1984"
for the remake. I think it's harder that way.

The Cellar Rats tried to save some money in the original game by
printing only one copy per game of the handout in color; the other
players had to try to identify flowers from a black-and-white version!
For some of the photos it was hard to even see the flowers.

Hibiscus. 4 for Pete.

I used to like what Hawaiian Air, as it then was, did with a hibiscus
to make their logo. In later versions starting in 2001, though, the
expression strikes me as rather grim. See:

And the 2017 version is no better:

Didn't I get this one? Oh, I see now that I placed the answer under
