- RQFTCI03 Game 4 Rounds 2-3: names and names - 2 Updates
msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Dec 10 05:06PM -0600 These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2003-02-10, and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written by members of the Usual Suspects, but have been reformatted and may have been retyped and/or edited by me. I will reveal the correct answers in about 3 days. For further information, including an explanation of the """ notation that may appear in these rounds, see my 2020-06-23 companion posting on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian Inquisition (RQFTCI*)". I did not write these rounds. * Game 4, Round 4 - Science - Herbs This round refers to the handout at: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/o4/4/herbs.pdf I have sorted the round in order of the handout. There were 6 decoys, which are now interspersed with the others; answer the decoys if you like for fun, but for no points. *This is a bonus round.* Each question asks you to identify a herb. In some cases this means any of a number of related plants normally grouped under the same generic name, which is what we expect you to give. For each question, you are given the picture number and some additional information in rot13. This information will mostly be about current and/or traditional uses for the herb in question. On each question you have the choice of whether or not to decipher the rot13 text before giving your first answer, and *IF YOU DID NOT*, you must tell me this by including a $ sign with your answer. If you give two answers, feel free to decipher the rot13 before choosing the second one. If you identify the herb correctly on your first or only try *and* do it without deciphering the rot13 text for that question, then you get a 2-point bonus for a total of 6 (only one answer given) or 5 (first of two). If you decipher the rot13, a correct answer is worth the usual score of 4 (only one answer given, or two answers both correct), 3 (first of two), or 2 (second of two). The bonus is not available on your second answer. To repeat, please put a $ sign before or after your first or only answer if you *DID NOT* decipher the rot13 before settling on it -- that is, put a $ sign if you *ARE TRYING* for the bonus. So your answers should look like one of these four forms: - Dog$ (for 6 or 0) - Dog$, cat (for 5, 2, or 0) - Dog (for 4 or 0) - Dog, cat (for 3, 2, or 0, or 4 if both are correct) To repeat, on any question, if you are trying for the bonus, DO NOT decode the rot13 and DO put a $ with your first or only answer. 1. A tickle is a small channel. 4 for Dan Tilque. When this was posted in 2008, Dan Tilque commented: "if there's a weird geographic name in Canada, chances are excellent that it's in Newfoundland". Just so. > 8. Which BC coastal community, located near the mouth of the > Skeena River, is named for the first governor of the Hudson's > Bay Company? Prince Rupert. 4 for Dan Tilque. > 9. Edmonton is in Alberta, but one of its suburbs is named Fort > Saskatchewan. Why? It's on the North Saskatchewan River ("North" was not required). 4 for Dan Tilque. It is true that the fort was created (in 1875) before Alberta was named (in 1882, then as a district of the NWT), but it was also before Saskatchewan was named (which was at the same time -- after the Saskatchewan River), and anyway it is not an explanation for the name.
