msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Jun 04 06:59PM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2020-03-02,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

** Game 8, Round 9 - Entertainment - Worst Vacations in the Movies

We'll give you the year of release and a brief plot description;
you name the movie.

1. 2008. 17-year-old Kim is off to Paris where she is abducted
by Albanian sex traffickers as soon as she steps out of Charles
de Gaulle Airport. Luckily her dad's particular set of skills
helps get her back.

2. 2003. A scuba-diving husband and wife bob to the ocean's
surface, only to find that their boat has left them stranded,
miles from the Australian coast, surrounded by sharks and
jellyfish.

3. 2014. Remade as "Downhill" in 2020. An avalanche races toward
an Alpine ski resort's restaurant terrace, where a picture-
perfect family is having lunch. The husband sprints away,
taking his phone and his gloves, but leaving behind his wife
and children.

4. 2005. Two American backpackers are lured to Slovakia by the
prospect of no-strings sex with the eager locals, so it's hard
to be all that upset when instead they are maimed with power
drills, chainsaws, and blowtorches.

5. 1990. A construction worker pays to have the memories of a
trip-of-a-lifetime implanted into his brain. Unfortunately,
the process reveals that he is really a secret agent with a
history of Martian missions.

6. 1987. When two friends are stuck in a dreary cottage with no
heating, no food and no access to the finest wines available to
humanity, one of them says, "We've gone on holiday by mistake!"
Then they strangle, half-pluck, and cook a chicken.

7. 1977. Cave-dwelling cannibals attack, the Carter family fights
back, and as the trailer's peerless tag line puts it: "The
lucky ones died first."

8. 1972. (Remade in 2005 for TV and in 2006 for the big screen.)
A New Year's Eve party is in full swing on board when an aging
ship is capsized by a tsunami and the passengers experience
"hell upside down".

9. 1972. Remade in 2007. New bride Lila is sunburned to a crisp
and confined to her hotel room on her Miami Beach honeymoon.
Her husband Lenny then meets a blonde goddess who he imagines
is his soulmate.

10. 2019. With their relationship in trouble, a young American
couple travel to a fabled Swedish festival where a seemingly
pastoral paradise transforms into a sinister, dread-soaked
nightmare as the locals reveal their terrifying agenda.

1 In cricket, a bowler's performance is typically described in relation to four measures- overs bowled, maiden overs (from which no runs were scored), runs conceded and wickets taken. Due to the rarity of maiden overs in the Twenty20 format, that measure is typically replaced by what other?
2 In the Toy Story movie franchise, what name is inexpertly handwritten on the sole of Woody's right boot?
3 In relation to the stock exchange, what three words does the acronym ETF most commonly stand for?
4 Which native American name is traditionally used by skydivers as they leap from an aircraft?
5 What was the maiden name of the Duchess of Cambridge?
6 Which absurdist Irish writer, best known for his 1959 play Waiting for Godot, won the 1969 Nobel prize for literature?
7 Which city is the official seat of the EU parliament?
8 Which actress was Mrs. Alec Baldwin from 1993 to 2002?
9 In the field of education, what four disciplines does the acronym STEM refer to?
10 First published in 1970, the Australian magazine Tracks considers itself the "bible" of which sport?

Nibble. 4 for everyone -- Joshua, Dan Blum, Dan Tilque, Erland,
Pete, and Bruce.

I don't think I've ever seen this actually being used, but I've
certainly seen it mentioned. Since it's derived as a play on "byte"
-- which means the same as "octet" except in anachronustic usage --
the spelling I've more commonly seen is "nybble".

The bridge is still marked in smoots. Appropriately, Oliver Smoot
eventually became president of the International Organization
for Standardization, but his cousin George Smoot may have topped
him by winning the Nobel Prize in physics a couple of years later.
George Smoot is also one of only two people who won the $1,000,000 top
prize on the 2007-15 game show "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?".

No, I'm not going to give definitions of the other 26. You can
probably find most or all of them explained on Russ Rowlett's web
site if you want.

Baltimore Stallions.

The CFL expanded into the US starting in 1993, but reverted to only
having Canadian-based teams in 1996. The Stallions then moved to
Montreal and took the name of the city's earlier team, the Alouettes.

The Baltimore team did go by "CFL Colts" initially, but lost a trademark
suit over "Colts" and had to pick a new name. Since the question asked
for city and team name, that was not an acceptable answer.
