Now Game 5 is over, and the winner is JOSHUA KREITZER. Hearty
congratulations!

> Here's a round on Australasia -- a catch-all term, first coined in
> the 18th Century, for Australia and the island countries around it.

> 1. Which country's capital is Port Moresby?

Papua New Guinea. 4 for everyone -- Calvin, Erland, Joshua, Dan Blum,
Pete, and Dan Tilque.

> 2. Which country is composed chiefly of North Island, South Island,
> and Stewart Island?

New Zealand. 4 for everyone.

> 3. The Indian Ocean borders Australia. Name *either* of the two
> seas that also border Australia.

Coral Sea, Tasman Sea. And some others, Calvin believes. 4 for
Calvin (the hard way), Erland, Joshua (the hard way), Dan Blum,
Pete, and Dan Tilque.

> 4. How many states are in Australia?

6. (The other parts are territories.) 4 for Calvin, Erland, Joshua,
and Dan Tilque.

> 5. Name *any one* of the three principal exports of the island
> nation of Vanuatu.

Coffee, cocoa, beef. 2 for Pete.

> 6. Where does Australia rank among nations by area?

6th. (Brazil is 5th, India a rather distant 7th.) 4 for Calvin
and Erland. 3 for Pete.

> 7. Within 10,000 years, how long ago did the first aborigines
> arrive in Australia?

Estimates vary from 45,000 to 80,000 years, it turns out, so I'm
accepting 35,000 to 90,000. 4 for Calvin (the hard way), Erland,
Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque. 3 for Pete.

> 8. What maritime-minded name is given to the geographic region
> comprising Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia?

Oceania. 4 for Erland, Joshua, and Dan Tilque. 3 for Calvin.

> 9. This island nation, near both the equator and the International
> Date Line, is composed of 1,156 individual islands and islets.
> Its capital is Majuro. Name it.

Marshall Islands. 4 for Joshua.

> 10. What are the colors of the Australian flag?

Red, white, blue <http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/a/au.gif>.
4 for everyone.

(Oops, a 3-part answer.)

Erland adds "like most others". Not so; actually only about 1/8 of
all countries have flags using shades of those three colors and no
others. One list is: Australia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czechia,
France, Iceland, Laos, Liberia, Luxembourg, Nepal, Netherlands,
New Zealand, North Korea, Norway, Panama, Russia, Samoa, Slovakia,
Taiwan, Thailand, UK, US. Some countries have multiple versions of
their flag, with and without a coat of arms or similar, and this as
well as the issue of what countries are independent will affect the
exact count.

However, on that list, Australia, Russia, and the US do account
by themselves for almost 1/4 of the world's inhabitable land area,
if everything but Antarctica counts as "inhabitable"...

James Baldwin. 4 for Joshua.

Well, at 1/8 you can't say it is a particular original combination. Compare
that to those that have blue and yellow!

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2019-06-24,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

* Game 6, Round 2 - Entertainment - Confusing Celebrities,
or Why Jim Gets Confused Sometimes

*You* try to keep track of all those lookalikes, and soundalike
names, in the entertainment world! In fact, we're going to make
you do that right now. In each case, give us the names we're
looking for. (This round was deeply affected by the new rule
against two-part answers.)

There were no decoys on the handout:

http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-2/confu.jpg

And I have sorted this round in order of it.

1. In A, two guys with the same first name. Name the one on
the *right*.

2. In B, two actresses with the same first and last name. One's a
former Miss America. Give their shared name.

3. In C, a former Destiny's Child singer and an Oscar-nominated
actress. Again, they have the same first and last name.
Give their shared name.

4. In D, same initials, same last name. Name the one on the left.

5. In E, they have similar-sounding names. One won an Oscar for
her role in a Woody Allen movie, one starred in "American
Beauty". Name either.

6. In F, three guys, similar sounding names. One's a Canadian.
Name any of them.

7. In G, two lookalikes. One starred in "New Girl", one is a
singer who Kissed a Girl. Name either one.

8. In H, a major recording artist and the actor who played Harry
Potter's best friend. Name either one.

9. In I, two Canadians, same first name. Name the one who's *never*
been nominated for an Oscar.

10. There are two well-known actors in J -- one deceased -- with
the same first name. Same initials. Name either one.

* Game 6, Round 3 - Canadiana Sports - Let's Go Blue Jays, Eh?

The slogan "We the North" is already taken, but Major League
Baseball knew we were the North on 1977-04-07 when it snowed at
the first-ever Blue Jays game. This round is on Canadian baseball
players, and some answers may repeat.

Answers #1-6 played for the Blue Jays:

1. The first Canadian to play for the Jays got the game-winning
RBI in that first-ever game. He later spent 35 seasons as a
coach with different teams. Name this Vancouver native who's
in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

2. Four Canadians played for both the Jays and the Montreal Expos.
Name any of them.

3. Name the catcher who has the Jays record for most home runs by
a Canadian, with 66.

4. Name either of the runners-up for most Jays' home runs by a
Canadian, one with 43 and he other with 32.

5. 1996 was the first year when Canadians were both on the Jays'
roster on Canada Day. They were both pitchers and both were
named Paul. Name either of them.

6. Two Canadians *not* named Paul playing for the Jays on Canada Day
wouldn't happen until 2012. Their first names were Bret
and Scott. Give either of their surnames.

Answers #7-10 did not play for the Jays.

7. This pitcher from Quebec won the Cy Young Award in 2003 while
playing with the L.A. Dodgers. Name him.

8. This Toronto native has played his entire major-league career
with the Cincinnati Reds. He's a 6-time all-star and a National
League MVP. Name him.

9. In 2014, Canadian Justin Morneau signed with the Colorado
Rockies and requested #33, in honour of a fellow Canuck who was
a previous Rockie and a former Expo. Name that fellow Canuck.

10. This 5'8" second baseman from Windsor -- with perhaps the
funniest name in baseball -- only made it to the majors for a cup
of coffee with the Cardinals (he's now their first base coach).
But he was a key player on the Canadian Olympic baseball team
in 2004. Name him.

Why don't they ask which Canadian pitched a no hitter *against* the Jays
at Rogers Centre? I know that answer. (Or maybe you could ask it next
time you write a quiz.)
