msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Mar 25 01:32AM -0500 These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2019-03-04, and should be interpreted accordingly. On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty. Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup, based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal the correct answers in about 3 days. All questions were written by members of the Cellar Rats and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see my 2019-01-22 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)". ** Game 5, Round 9 - Canadiana - Cuisine In each case, name the food described. 1. A type of porridge made with a blend of wheat, rye, and flaxseed, first created in the 1920s in Manitoba. 2. A brand or type of semi-soft rind cheese that was originally manufactured by Trappist monks. 3. A fried dough pastry, stretched and sometimes coiled. Served to President Obama when he visited Canada. 4. A no-bake dessert consisting of three layers: a wafer and chocolate crumb base, custard-flavored butter icing in the middle, and a layer of chocolate gamache on top. 5. Lean boneless pork loin, trimmed fine, wet cured, and rolled in cornmeal. It is not smoked. It is the main ingredient in the St. Lawrence Market's signature sandwich. 6. A dish popular in Quebec, made of layered ground beef, sautéed onions, canned kernel corn, canned creamed corn, and mashed potatoes on top. Answer in French. 7. A dense bread product that contains malt, egg, and no salt, and is boiled in honey-sweetened water before being baked, traditionally in a wood-fired oven. Often finished with poppy seeds. Hint: its name refers to a city. 8. A type of chicken sandwich consisting of chicken, sliced bread, and gravy. It is usually served with green peas and commonly found in Québécois and Eastern Canadian cuisine. *Either* name the sandwich in English or French, or else name the Quebec restaurant chain that sells vast quantities of this item and is the 16th-largest chain in Canada. 9. A pickled vegetable sauce or topping, popular in Quebec and Eastern Canada. Acadians brought the recipe to the American South. It is a combination of vegetables, mainly green and red tomatoes, onions, carrots, beans of various types, asparagus, cauliflower, and peas. We will accept the American name or the one used here. 10. A Maritime dessert consisting of bread crumbs, raisins, brown sugar, molasses, butter, flour, and spices. These are mixed and put in a pudding bag, wrapped in cheesecloth, or stuffed into an empty can and then boiled, usually along with the cooking vegetables or the Jiggs dinner. ** Game 5, Round 10 - Challenge Round * A. msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Mar 25 01:29AM -0500 Mark Brader: > * Game 5, Round 7 - Entertainment - The Oscars > 1. Who was the first actor to win Best Actor in a Leading Role in > *two consecutive years*? Spencer Tracy. ("San Francisco" (1936), "Captains Courageous" (1937).) 4 for Joshua. A couple of people guessed Tom Hanks. He's the only *other* person so far to win this award in consecutive years -- for "Philadelphia" (1993) and "Forrest Gump" (1994). > 2. In the awards for 1966, Vanessa Redgrave and her sister Lynn were > both nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Name *either* > of the two movies. "Georgy Girl" (with Lynn), "Morgan!" (also known as "Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment"). 4 for Joshua. They both lost to Elizabeth Taylor ("Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"). > 3. Name *both* actors who have won Oscars for playing the role of > Vito Corleone. Marlon Brando (leading role in "The Godfather" (1972)), Robert De Niro (supporting role in "The Godfather: Part II" (1974).) 4 for Joshua, Dan Tilque, Calvin, and Pete. > 4. Who has won the Best Director Oscar the most times? John Ford (4 times -- "The Informer" (1935), "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940), "How Green Was My Valley" (1941), "The Quiet Man" (1952).) 4 for Joshua. 3 for Calvin. 2 for Pete. > 5. "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" is one of > three movies to win 11 Academy Awards each. Name *either* > of the other two. "Ben-Hur" (1959), "Titanic" (1997). 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, Calvin, and Pete. "Titanic" had 13 nominations, with Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart losing the two Oscars for actresses to Helen Hunt and Kim Basinger respectively; "Ben-Hur" had 12 nominations, losing to "Room at the Top" for Adapted Screenplay; but the LOTR movie won 11 out of 11. > 6. Edith Head won 8 Oscars -- in what category? Best Costume Design. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, and Pete. 2 for Calvin. Altogether she was nominated 35 times in 30 years. This is possible because for much of her career there were separate Oscars for costumes for B&W and color; she was nominated 10 times for both, and once won both, namely for "All About Eve" and "Samson and Delilah" (1950). > 7. This 1981 film won Best Actor and Best Actress for its leads, > and the man's real-life daughter, who co-starred, was nominated > for her supporting role. Name the movie. "On Golden Pond" (Katharine Hepburn, Henry and Jane Fonda). 4 for Joshua and Calvin. Jane Fonda was in her mid-40s when she made this movie, and her appearance in a bikini led to a second career for her -- starring in workout videos. > 8. To date only one person has won both an Oscar and a Nobel > Prize: who? Oops: There are two. George Bernard Shaw and Bob Dylan. 4 for Joshua (the hard way) and Calvin. 2 for Pete. Shaw was the expected answer: in 1926 he received a delayed award of the previous year's Nobel for Literature, and then he shared the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for "Pygmalion" (1938) with Ian Dalrymple, Cecil Lewis, and W.P. Lipscomb. But Bob Dylan actually did even better, in that his Oscar was not shared: he won Best Original Song for "Things Have Changed" from "Wonder Boys" (2000), and then took the Nobel for Literature in 2016. So this question was, as Joshua noted, more than 2 years out of date. > Actress, resulting in the wrong winner being announced. > The presenters were an actor and actress who had co-starred in > a 1967 movie. Name *either* of them. Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway. ("Bonnie and Clyde".) 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Calvin, and Pete. > 10. The song "Que Sera Sera" won an Oscar. What movie was it in? "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1956). 4 for Joshua and Calvin. 3 for Dan Blum. > or were recommendations selected by reviewers.) > 1. "Brief Answer to Big Questions" is a collection of articles > from which recently deceased scientist? Stephen Hawking. 4 for everyone -- Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, Dan Tilque, Calvin, and Pete. > 2.
