Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 4 updates in 2 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Aug 07 11:25PM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2018-05-28,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of What She Said and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2018-07-16 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

** Game 2, Round 10 - Challenge Round - X Marks the Spot

Every week we have A through F, but never an X. Time to rectify
this oversight!

* A. Literature - The X-Men

These mutant heroes have been some of the most popular in comics
for over 50 years.

A1. Which villain did the X-Men fight in their very first issue,
in 1963?

A2. The X-Men are traditionally headquartered at a private
school run by Charles Xavier, which is secretly intended
to train young mutants to be superheroes. In what *county*
of New York state is the school located?

* B. Entertainment - X-Rated Movies

No, not porn.

B1. What is the only X-rated film to win Best Picture at the
Academy Awards?

B2. What 1972 film was the first animated film to earn an
X rating?

* C. Sports - The X Games

C1. Within 1 year, in what year were the inaugural X Games held?

C2. Since 2002, the Winter X Games have been held at the same
location every year. Where is it? Name the city.

* D. History - Kings X

D1. Christian X of Denmark, who ruled 1912-47, was also the
*only* king to rule over which other country?

D2. Louis X, who reigned 1314-16, was King of France and which
other country, which is now in Spain?

* E. Science - X-Rays

You won't see through these questions.

E1. X-rays are generally agreed to have been discovered by this
person, who also invented the term "X-rays", and whose name
is also used as in alternate name for them.

E2. Because X-ray photons carry enough energy to liberate
electrons from their atoms or molecules, X-rays are
considered to be a form of what type of radiation?

* F. Miscellaneous - X Beers

F1. In what country is a beer named XXXX ["four X"] brewed?

F2. Molson XXX ["triple X"] is the strongest beer brewed
by Molson. Within 0.1 percentage points, what is its
alcohol content by volume?

Deer-shaped targets. 4 for Peter and Dan Blum.

The expected answer was Spain, but France seems to have at least
as good a claim. I'm accepting either one or "the Basque country".
4 for Dan Tilque, Erland, Peter, Joshua, and Pete.

> 8. Roque ["roak"] was an event at the 1904 Olympics. It's a
> hard-court variant of which genteel grass-court "sport"?

Croquet. 4 for Dan Tilque, Erland, Peter, Dan Blum, Calvin, Joshua,
and Pete.

As you will remember from Game 5, Round 10, of the previous
season, croquet itself was also a one-time Olympic sport, in 1900.
When I_added a note mentioning roque when posting the answers to
that round, I didn't know I was supplying a spoiler for this question!

Wushu. 3 for Peter.

1992 (accepting 1988-96). The man was on a a public course, not the
actual Olympic venue, when he crashed into a vehicle. 4 for Peter.
3 for Pete.
