swp <stephen.w.perry@gmail.com>: Aug 24 07:08PM -0700 This is Rotating Quiz #303. Entries must be posted by Friday, August 31st, 2018 at 12 PM (Eastern Daylight Time). Usual rules: no looking anything up, no discussion, etc. The winner gets to create the next RQ. Please post your answers to all questions in a single followup in the newsgroup, quoting the questions and placing your answer below each one. Only one answer is allowed per question. If the answer is a person's name then only the surname is required, but if any other part is given it must be correct or the answer will not count. There is a theme but it does not affect scoring. Each correct answer is worth 2 points; I do not have any way in mind in which an answer can be almost correct, but if one presents itself such an answer will be worth 1 point. In case of a tie, the first tiebreaker will be whoever scored the most points on the hardest questions (defined post-facto as the ones which the fewest people got any points on). Second tiebreaker will be posting order. 0. what is the study of the origin and development of a word, tracing it back to its original language and to its sources in contemporary or earlier languages. 1. how many oscars for best director did alfred hitchcock win? 2. in our solar system, how many planets are smaller than earth? 3. what does an oniomaniaic love to do? 4. australia's highway 1 forms a complete loop along its borders. to the nearest 100 miles, what is it's length? 5. what substance makes chili peppers 'hot'? 6. what is the only world capital whose name is derived from an algonquin word? 7. which u.s. military service has the motto "semper paratus"? 8. what color jacket does the winner of the pga masters tournament wear? 9. what river do you cross to go from switzerland and liechtenstein. good luck! swp |
