msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): May 22 01:22PM -0500 These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2018-03-12, and should be interpreted accordingly. On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty. Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup, based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal the correct answers in about 3 days. All questions were written by members of Bill Psychs and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see my 2017-09-25 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)". * Game 8, Round 7 - Sports - NBA Centers In the NBA, the center is traditionally the biggest man on the court. Recently, centers who can also shoot and pass have become more common, but dunks and blocks will never go out of style. The following are all notable NBA centers. In all cases, name the player. 1. This player was nicknamed "the Admiral" based on his prior service as an officer in the United States Navy. He played his entire career for the San Antonio Spurs. He also was a 10-time NBA All-Star and the 1995 NBA MVP. 2. This Serbian player was the first player born and trained outside the United States to play in over 1,000 games in the NBA. Forward P.J. Brown claimed that he also might have been the best of all time at flopping. He is currently the vice president of basketball operations and general manager of the Sacramento Kings. 3. He is the NBA's all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points. Originally known as Lew Alcindor, he played 20 seasons in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers. 4. He is the only player to score 100 points in a single NBA game. 5. He was the only player to block more shots than he scored points over the course of his career. He is a Sudanese-American who is also tied for the title of tallest player in the history of the NBA at 7'7" (231 cm). 6. He is the only player born outside of the US to have led the NBA in All-Star voting. He was selected by the Houston Rockets as the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft. 7. This player was nicknamed "The Dunking Dutchman". He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers with the second overall pick in the 1988 NBA draft and spent his entire professional career with the team. He is the most successful Dutch basketball player ever. 8. This player was the first NBA player to record at least 20 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 blocks in a single game off the bench. He is a 7'6" tall (229 cm) German-American who also had a role as one of the NBA stars in the film "Space Jam". 9. This player was known for taunting his opponents by waving his index finger after a successful block. He is a Congolese- American who won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award four times, and is second all-time in registered blocks, behind only Hakeem Olajuwon. 10. This player is one of only three players to win NBA MVP, All-Star game MVP, and Finals MVP awards in the same year, in 2000. In addition to his basketball career, he has released four rap albums, with his first one going platinum. His acting career has met with less success. * Game 8, Round 8 - Canadiana Geography - Toronto Region Municipalities This map http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/8-8/muni.pdf shows the administrative borders of lower-tier and single-tier municipalities in the Toronto region. For each question, we'll give you the number on the map and the name of its mayor. You name the place. I've rearranged the round in numerical sequence, so the 2 decoys are interspersed with the other questions. Answer the decoys if you like for fun, but for no points. 1. Fred Eisenberger. 2. Gordon Krantz. 3. Rob Burton. 4. Linda Jeffrey. 5. Allan Thompson. 6. Maurizio Bevilacqua. 7. David Barrow. 8. Frank Scarpitti. 9 (decoy). 10 (decoy). 11. Steve Parish. 12. John Henry. 13. If you want to show off, for no points, also name as many of the unnumbered municipalities as you can. You don't have to say which is which. -- Mark Brader, Toronto | "What caused the submarine to sink?" msb@vex.net | "Dad, it was the 20,000 leaks!!" My text in this article is in the public domain. |
