In what year, exactly, did the first of the new plastic > Canadian bills -- or "polymer bank notes", as the Bank of > Canada would have it -- begin circulating? 2002? I had an interesting experience on my recent visit in Canada. Crossing the skybridge on the airport in Vancouver on the way to immigration, I noticed two items lying on the floor. One was a CAD 5 note, which certainly look authentic with plastic, metal string and all. The other was labeled $10, but it looked more like monopoly money to me, and I asked myself whether it could be authentic, and in such case still be valid? (In Sweden we replace all bills and coins, with one exception, recently in two rounds, and none of the old stuff is valid anymore.) When I showed the suspicious bill to a Canadian friend he not only confirmed that it was still legal tender, but he also quickly asked it could trade it for a new $10 bill, since the old bill reminded him of his youth. > * F. However, I've just learned that this is about to change. Currently the plan is to demonetize only the denominations of paper money that are no longer issued -- namely the $1 bill, the $2 bill, the commemorative $25 bill of 1935, the $500 bill last issued in 1935, and the $1,000 bill last issued in 2000-- but in the future they could decide to demonetize old series. > confirmed that it was still legal tender, but he also quickly asked it > could trade it for a new $10 bill, since the old bill reminded him of > his youth. Ah, but how old was he? Here's the page about the change, which shows all the styles of the withdrawn denominations: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/banknotes/upcoming-changes-to-legal-tender-status-for-older-bank-notes/ There was one more style of paper money after those, after they came down to the present 5 denominations but before they switched to plastic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Canadian_bills2.jpg So which stiyle of bill did you find? -- Mark Brader, Toronto "Remember the Golgafrinchans" msb@vex.net -- Pete Granger My text in this article is in the public domain. |
