The GOLQ Institute <list@golq.org>: Feb 08 12:00AM -0800 RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #372 (GOLQ372) Congratulations to DEC & Friends, Delphi Trivia Club, and Village Idiots, who tied for first place with perfect scores! Just behind was Really Rockin' In Boston, who missed only the tie-breakers. Although I billed this quiz as themeless, I later realized that I'd subliminally embedded a baseball micro-theme (songs #12 & 25), as a symptom of my eagerness for the 2018 season to commence. (Did someone mention Giancarlo Stanton?) Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed). As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The February 2018 quiz (GOLQ #373) will be posted soon. -- Howard Teitelbaum ________________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If your baby treats you wrong Don't go 'round singing the blues Remember my friend, everybody can't win Somebody, somebody's got to lose #01) Allison, Gene: "You Can Make It If You Try" (1957/58) [36] {3} <82><202> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTQWts9mAAs In the beginning, you really loved me I was too blind, I couldn't see But now you've left me Oh, how I cried #02) Bell, William: "You Don't Miss Your Water" (1962) [95] {-} <88><235> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJPAwKPD9KU And girl, I don't really blame you For having a dream of your own #03) Brooklyn Bridge, The: "Worst That Could Happen" (1968/69) [3] {-} <8><166><261> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3ItGu2FW1Q (5th Dimension, 1967) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Wn04VG_D3g (Brooklyn Bridge, 1968) First recorded by The 5th Dimension in 1967 for their LP "The Magic Garden." That album's songs were all by Jimmy Webb (with the exception of a cover of "Ticket to Ride"), and its concept was to illustrate the arc of a love affair until its inevitable end. There's more than seven wonders in the world I just met number eight #04) Clanton, Jimmy: "Venus In Blue Jeans" (1962) [7] {-} <1><141><317> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXEGjxM1lIk (Barry Mann, 1961) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24mLaK--e2A (Bruce Bruno, 1962) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sajsyxmF7Zk (Jimmy Clanton, 1962) Previously recorded in 1961 by Barry Mann (unreleased) and in 1962 by Bruce Bruno (uncharted). Bruno's recording lists Jack Keller & Howard Greenfield as writers, whereas Clanton's lists Greenfield & Neil Sedaka. A few sources mentioned that Keller wrote the song about his girlfriend. If freedom were a thing that money could buy The rich would live and the poor would die #05) Dick and Deedee: "All My Trials" (1964) [89] {n/c} <-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLKd6SZ4-H0 (Cynthia Gooding) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm3VkSxe76E (Dick and Deedee) Based on a Bahamian song about a dying mother consoling her grieving children. In the folk revival era, lyrics about the struggle soon being over were re-imagined in a civil rights context. Recorded by Cynthia Gooding in 1957 (1st link is her 1960 live TV version), and subsequently by other folk artists. Dick and Deedee's was the only charting version in the GOLQ era. A variation of the song with a romantic theme ("All My Sorrows") was recorded by Glenn Yarbrough, The Kingston Trio, etc. What you gonna do when the well runs dry? You're gonna sit right down and cry What you gonna do when I say bye-bye? All you gonna do is dry your eye #06) Domino, Fats: "I'm Walkin'" (1957) [4] {1} <35><256> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUm98kk2XPY Fats' illustrious career stretched from the late '40s until a few years before his death on Oct. 24, at 89. This song was co-written by him with his long-time collaborator, Dave Bartholomew (who's still kicking at 99). So always make me wonder Always make me guess And even if I ask you Darling, don't confess #07) Edwards, Tommy: "I Really Don't Want To Know" (1960) [18] {-} <167> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxzt4irIRh4 (Les Paul and Mary Ford, 1954) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZAXi1FyoJM (Tommy Edwards, 1960) Originally a hit in 1954 for Les Paul and Mary Ford. Other GOLQ-era charting versions by Solomon Burke (1962), Esther Phillips (1963), and Ronnie Dove (1966). Dove also fits alphabetically in the quiz, so he was an acceptable answer (even though he added a couple of words to the above lyrics). Do the Locomotion, yeah! Don't hurry me this way Shake it, shake it to the break of day #08) Gentrys, The: "Keep On Dancing" (1965) [4] {-} <22><211> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAJl560C6SU (Avantis, 1963) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq3VSaAuBmk (Gentrys, 1965) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=li33dwttQFI (Gentrys on Hullaballoo) Originally recorded in a slower Isley-esque style by The Avantis in 1963. The Gentrys recorded a raved-up version, but it only lasted about 1:30. Accordingly, the first 40 seconds or so of the recording (from initial drum roll to first organ solo) was replicated at the end to pad it to 2+ minutes. If I knew a step or two The same as you I'd have a chance For romance #09) Gorme, Eydie: "Mama, Teach Me To Dance" (1956) [34] {-} <-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5Y_D4ECy9Y When you held me close When you made my soul roast #10) Harris, Thurston: "Do What You Did" (1958) [57] {14} <225> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhMINJneCy8 If you could only see me I know exactly where I am You wouldn't want to be me Oh, I can assure you of that #11) Hollies, The: "King Midas In Reverse" (1967) [51] {-} <117><181> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89feGMDGd4k Up to bat (to bat) I thought I hit a love run But to my surprise I found I didn't hit none #12) Intruders, The: "(Love Is Like A) Baseball Game" (1968) [26] {4} <222> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye4i6t3iq7M I woke up this morning, baby Yes, and I called your name I felt so much love this morning Little girl, little girl, it was a shame #13) Jeffrey, Joe, Group: "My Pledge Of Love" (1969) [14] {-} <33><198> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbpUOx79qSc From the very start Open up your heart #14) Knight, Robert: "Everlasting Love" (1967) [13] {14} <24><238><337> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFqmHlc1EXM Knight died on Nov. 6 at 72. The GOLQ Institute <list@golq.org>: Feb 07 11:58PM -0800 GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #373 (GOLQ373) Welcome to GOLQ373! There are two related themes. All songs, including the tie-breakers, are part of at least one of the themes. The recordings qualify for the themes via artist name, song title, lyrics, or multiple ones of these. Some of these are likely to be stumpers, but the themes should help to identify them. For one of the tie-breakers, I am familiar with two GOLQ-era alphabetically-fitting versions of this song (with regard to the other tie- breaker). Only one of these two artists has a name that fits one of the themes, but because it is sometimes hard enough to come up with one artist for a tie-breaker song you think you know, I will count any alphabetically-fitting artist as correct. -- Regina Litman <golq373@golq.org> ============================================================================ Blindly searching for lyrics on the Internet is not in the spirit of the GOLQs, and we disapprove of this practice.
