msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Feb 04 04:48AM -0600 These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2017-12-05, and should be interpreted accordingly. On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty. Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup, based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal the correct answers in about 3 days. All questions were written by members of Smith & Guessin' and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see my 2017-09-25 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)". ** Final, Round 6 - Sports That is: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/gfr6/spo.jpg * Hockey Quotes 1. According to Hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Howe, "All hockey players are bilingual. They know English and..." And what? 2. Name the Hall of Fame coach of the Montreal Canadiens (1955-68) who said that "Predictions are for gypsies". 3. Name the Toronto Maple Leafs coach (1979-80) and general manager (1989-91) who told the media one day: "I've got nothing to say, and I'll only say it once." * Olympic Streaks 4. In which sport did Steve Redgrave of Britain win gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games from 1984 to 2000? 5. Which Asian country dominated Olympic men's field hockey from 1920 to 1980, winning 11 medals, including 8 gold and 6 of them consecutive? 6. Which European nation has won more Olympic medals (at 497) than any other nation now existing *that has never hosted the Games*? That total includes 6 consecutive golds in team fencing (sabre) from 1932 to 1960. * Grand Slams 7. The first man to win all 4 Grand Slam tennis singles titles was an Englishman who completed the feat in 1935. He later started a sportswear company, which includes a store at 964 Queen Street West in Toronto. Name him. 8. The record for grand-slam home runs by a player in one major-league season was set by Don Mattingly in 1987 and matched by Travis Hafner in 2006. How many did they each hit? 9. Today in men's golf, the Grand Slam refers to the Masters, the British Open, the US Open, and the PGA Championship. Since that definition was adopted, no one has won all four tournaments in the same year. But there are five men who have won all four in different years. Two of them, in fact, have won each one of the four at least three times: Jack Nicklaus (in 1962-80) and Tiger Woods (1997-2008). Name any one of the other three men. * European Soccer Teams We show you the uniform jersey, you name the team. 10. http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/gfr6/team/10.jpg 11. http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/gfr6/team/11.jpg 12. http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/gfr6/team/12.jpg * Trophies In each case, name the sport where the trophy is awarded. 13. Solheim Cup. 14. Commissioner's Trophy. 15. Larry O'Brien Trophy. -- Mark Brader, Toronto | "Defendant's speech ends in long sentence" msb@vex.net | --Minneapolis Tribune, February 25, 1981 My text in this article is in the public domain. |

"Aroostook" was a good guess; that river *crosses* the border and flows into the St. John about 20 miles south of where the border diverges from the St. John to run straight south. > 9. That dot is in Colorado.) 4 for Joshua, Dan Tilque, Marc, Peter, Bruce, Dan Blum, Pete, and Jason. > 15. http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/gfr4/oops/15.jpg The expected answer was Paramaribo (it should be one country east, in Suriname; that dot is in Guyana, about 320 miles away). But as Erland was the first to note, Bariloche is also misplaced (it should be distinctly farther north, not south, than the Valdes Peninsula on the east coast; that dot is about 180 miles south of the true position). So I'm accepting either one. Hence, 4 for Erland, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Peter, and Pete. 3 for Dan Blum.
