Unspeakably terrible reviews of whatevers cool with hipsters and indie
know-nothings (I give it a 2.4). God Pitchfork sucks, I hate it so much.

> a. what is the only elemental metal that does not rust?

Quite a few, I would say, although it depends on what you mean with "rust".
Most metals are subject to oxidation, but some, like aluminum acquires
sheltering layer of oxde which prevents further oxidation. I guess you
mean the only metal that do not form an oxide with the oxygen in air. Again,
I would exoect that to be more than one, but I may be wrong on that point. I
go with gold.

Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #370
Recordings #01-25 were from 1955 through 1969
Due 5:00 p.m. EST (GMT-5) on Thursday, November 30, 2017
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll buy you a diamond ring, my friend
If it makes you feel all right
#01)

I keep straining my ears to hear a sound
Maybe someone is digging underground
#02)

With music and words I've been playing
For you I have written a song
To be sure that you'll know what I am saying
I'll translate as I go along
#03)

You'd better be smart
You've gotta make up your mind
Stop breaking my heart
And leave the others behind
#04)

I couldn't sleep a wink for tryin'
I saw the rising of the sun
And all night long my heart was cryin'
#05)

Well, I been a-doing my homework all week long
And now the house is empty and my folks are gone
#06)

Why I want you
Heaven knows
Who will love you
With a love true
#07)

She's my sugartime baby
I'm her lollipop
#08)

Everybody knows
That Baby's got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
Have fallen from her curls
#09)

I've been made blue
I've been lied to
#10)

Yeah, today is gonna, gonna be the day
I want you all to understand
Now I am a man
#11)

When idle gossip pulls your arm
And the clouds of doubt begin to form
#12)

And when our year has ended
And I have gone away
You'll often speak about me
#13)

Climbed up on a ladder
To get a better view
And bless my soul to my surprise
My darling, it was you
#14)

Meet the gang at Joe's Café
If she's willing
We'll go steady right away
#15)

A wailin' song and a good guitar
The only things that I understand, poor boy
The only things that I understand
#16)

Thought I was in love before
And then you moved in next door
#17)

And when we've had a few more days (when we've had a few more days)
I wonder if I'll get to say (wonder if I'll get to say)
#18)

I love your face (it's in the right place)
I love your mind (that's very kind)
#19)

Now, Samson told Delilah
Loud and clear
Keep your cotton-pickin' fingers out my curly hair
Oh, yeah
#20)

To really live, you must almost die
And it happened just that way with me
#21)

Win a little
Lose a little
And maybe sing the blues a little
#22)

Your kisses taste like it's goodbye
My eyes know they're gonna cry
#23)

Please write me one line
Tell me your love is still only mine
#24)

I'm writing this letter
To someone unknown
So if you should find it
And if you're alone
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
-------------

He resembles George Harrison of the Beatles
But he wears his hair tied in a small bow at the back
#T1)

Now my mother and my father
They might hear if I stay here too long
One kiss and we'll part
Then you better be going
Although I hate to see you go
#T2)

Why she had to go
I don't know
She wouldn't say
I said something wrong
#01)

Ah, won't you say "Yes"
Don't you say "No"
Make me feel good
#02)

I got the rockin' pneumonia
I need a shot of rhythm and blues
#03)

Some day
We'll meet again, my love
Some day
Whenever the spring breaks through

Now when Julie's fella came to call and saw them kissin'
He started home at once
But Julie said, "I'm surprised at you
Don't go actin' like a dunce"
#05)

Get up in the morning
Slaving for bread sir
So that every mouth can be fed
#06)

I'm just mad about fourteen
Uh, fourteen's mad about me
#07)

Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

This party was the first one she ever had attended
It had to happen on our very first date

A-red ones and-a green ones
Yellow, white, and blue
Young and old
Rich and poor

The rabbit spit in the bulldog's face
Joe kept a-beatin' till the early morn'
#11)

Why
Must we say goodbye
Each time we part
My heart wants to die
#12)

Right on that Mason-Dixon Line
And swing it from Virginia
To Tennessee with all that love that's in ya
#13)

There's no tellin' where love may appear
Something in my heart keeps sayin'
My someplace is here
#14)

I don't even know how to love you
Just the way you want me to
#15)

Oh! I really think you're swell!
Uh huh! You really ring the bell!
#16)

While the blossoms still cling to the vine
I'll taste your strawberries
I'll drink your sweet wine

In fact it's a gas

RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #368 (GOLQ368)

Congratulations to The EJ's & Co. and to the Village Idiots, who tied for first
with perfect scores.

Just behind was Barry Silk, who got all the regular songs, followed by Dale
Latimer & team, who missed just one regular song but got both tie-breakers.

A special shout-out to my sister & quiz-partner Bonnie, who missed this one due
to some medical problems. She expects to be back in the GOLQ saddle soon.

Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed).

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The October 2017 quiz (GOLQ #369)
will be posted soon.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #368 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was eight years old when I fell in love
It seems like yesterday
Down the old mill road in a pretty house lived
Some folks not far from me
#01) Ames Brothers, The: "Pussy Cat" (1958/59) [17] {-} <187>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6mXi7hwH-4

She's been a little wallflower on the shelf
Standing by herself
Now she got the nerve to take the chance
#02) Bland, Billy: "Let The Little Girl Dance" (1960) [7] {11} <16><226>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSE2OFZp8DM

Billy died 3/22/17 at 84.

Flowers have blooms
The ocean has waves
The sky has clouds
People have babes
#03) Campbell, Glen: "I Wanna Live" (1968) [36] {-} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQnSh6fwyag ("I Wanna Live")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzQQoUx1oOU ("Adiós", recorded 2013)

Glen's long career wound down following his Alzheimer's diagnosis in 2010.
His "Goodbye Tour" ended in late 2012; he then recorded his final album,
"Adiós," during the winter of 2012/13. The album was finally issued in
spring 2017, shortly before his death on 8/8/17 at 81. The second link is
the title song from that final album - his voice was still marvelous.

I didn't mean to start it
Ooh, I wish it was all just a dream
#04) The Drew-Vels: "Tell Him" (1964) [90] {n/c} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RtHvljyDZ4 (Drew-Vels, 1964)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoF663ZHbM0 (Patti Drew, 1967)

The group comprised the 3 Drew sisters (lead singer Patti, Lorraine, & Erma)
plus bass Carlton Black (who originally wrote the song as "Tell Her" for his
prior group, The Duvals). By 1967, Patti was a solo act, and she cut a new
version, also featuring Carlton, at a slower tempo and with a brass section
in lieu of her sisters. Either Drew-Vels or Patti Drew got full credit.

Like a bird on the wing

#05) Fireflies, The: "You Were Mine" (1959) [21] {-} <7><100><275>

Lead singer Ritchie Adams died 3/6/17 at 78.

Spent a lifetime looking for somebody
To give me love like you
Now you told me that you wanna leave me
Darling, I just can't let you
#06) Foundations, The: "Baby, Now That I've Found You"
(1967/68) [11] {33} <12><119><300>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wd1zuaR_tu8

Lead singer Clem Curtis died 3/27/17 at 76. He left the group in 1968; his
successor, Colin Young, is on their other big hit, "Build Me Up Buttercup."

First, I'd put heaven by your side

The band was a creation of songwriters P. F. Sloan & Steve Barri, for
producer Lou Adler's Dunhill Records. The first band they assembled, who
recorded this single, featured Willie Fulton on lead vocals. After a rift
with Sloan/Barri/Adler, the entire group was dismissed, and a different
lineup assumed the Grass Roots moniker. This latter group, featuring lead
vocalist/bassist Rob Grill, recorded the string of hits from '67 into the
early '70s. The Grill-led group re-did this song for the 1967 LP
"Let's Live for Today."

I give my heart to you
And as the years go by
It will be true
I'll always hold you near
Sure as the stars above

Hinckley, who interviews Jose. In the second link, Dana describes
that first sketch, and what inspired Jose's creation. The third link
deals in particular with the astronaut routine.

similar "Hey Little Girl" mini-theme, using the Major Lance song above, plus
those by Dee Clark and by The Techniques. (Del's had been used earlier, and
GOLQ rules at that time did not allow song re-use.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fs3ZZkKnvng ("Na Na Hey Hey ...")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qH5ciK7duI ("It's The Magic In You Girl")

Co-writer and lead singer Gary DeCarlo died 6/28/17 at 75.

DeCarlo, Paul Leka, and Dale Frashuer wrote an early version called just
"Kiss Him Goodbye" in the early '60s when they were in a group together.
In 1968, DeCarlo recorded several Leka-produced songs for Mercury; the
following year, in need of B-sides, they resurrected this song, bringing in
old band-mate Frashuer to help record it. Leka played keyboards, while the
drums were spliced together from drum tracks from DeCarlo's 1968 recordings.

They realized that the song needed a chorus to flesh it out. Leka recalled:
"I started writing while I was sitting at the piano going 'na, na, na, na,
na, na, na, na' ... everything was 'na na' when you didn't have a lyric.
Gary added 'hey hey'." After creating the name "Steam" for the single, an
entirely different group was assembled for publicity pictures and touring.
The trio that recorded it never performed it live.

The intended A-side was "It's The Magic In You Girl" (second link above).

All you fellas, gather 'round me
