If someone asked you "what is seven minus *breath* three plus two?",
don't tell me you'd think the intended answer was unambiguously six.

No, though I'd prefer the word "quantity" rather than a pause -- that's
the usage I picked up at some point in my education.
 
But in a contest conducted in writing, there'd have to be some indication
that such a pause, bracketing, or the like was intended, and there wasn't.
