msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Sep 02 09:05PM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2017-04-04,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 10-12 days.

All questions were written by members of 5 Easy Pieces and are

Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #368
Recordings #01-25 were from 1955 through 1969
Due 5:00 PM EDT (GMT-4) on Saturday, September 30, 2017.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was eight years old when I fell in love
It seems like yesterday
Down the old mill road in a pretty house lived
Some folks not far from me
#01)

She's been a little wallflower on the shelf
Standing by herself
Now she got the nerve to take the chance
#02)

Flowers have blooms
The ocean has waves
The sky has clouds
People have babes
#03)

I didn't mean to start it
Ooh, I wish it was all just a dream
#04)

Like a bird on the wing
When he knows it's early spring
#05)

Spent a lifetime looking for somebody
To give me love like you
Now you told me that you wanna leave me
Darling, I just can't let you
#06)

First, I'd put heaven by your side
Pretty flowers would grow wherever you walked, honey
And over your head would be the bluest sky
#07)

Don't bother cryin'
Don't bother crawlin'
It's all over now
No use in stallin'
#08)

I give my heart to you
And as the years go by
It will be true
I'll always hold you near
Sure as the stars above
#09)

You got to put on the step-up hydraulic double dynamo reversible booster
You got to activate the decompression activator
And you got to put on the anti-magnetic degaussing system
#10)

You don't drive a big fine car
You don't look like a movie star
And on your money we won't get far
#11)

Please let me have a chance with you
For I like to do the monkey too
And let's get together
#12)

And now it's over, I'm awake at last
Old heartaches and memories from the past
It was just another dream about my lost love
#13)

Not even when you're glancing by
For I won't weaken
When we're speaking
#14)

Just got a job on the railroad
The work is hard and long
But I'm gonna build us a future
And show your daddy he's wrong
#15)

Each night seems like the Fourth of July
When stars spangle the sky
Dreams can come true
If you believe they do
#16)

You were with a guy named Joe
Then all at once you said you had to go
I never even caught your name
#17)

He'll never love you
The way that I love you
'Cause if he did, no no
He wouldn't make you cry
#18)

All you fellas, gather 'round me
And let me give you some good advice
What I'm gonna, gonna ask you now
You better think about it twice
#19)

Don't want your jewelry
Or money too
And nothin' else, nothin' else you said you would do
#20)

Have you searched through all your dreams?
Did you ever find a trace of me?
Even though you say we're through
That I'm not the one for you
#21)

I want a man with lots of charm
I want a man, no false alarm
The kind of guy who'll kiss my tears when I cry
#22)

And listen, girls, when you give your heart away
You can easily be hurt
And the least little wrong he does
Always seems like dirt
#23)

Just see me now
Makes it worth the time I've waited
She was all I need to make me see, oh yeah
I keep hopin' with all my might
Everything's gonna turn out right
#24)

You said your love was true
And we'd never, never ever part
Now you want someone new
And it breaks my heart
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

That's when I think of you
You say, but yet I wonder
If your love was ever true
#T1)

My home's across the river
My home's across the water
Oh-oh, oh-oh, Hannah
#T2)

RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #366 (GOLQ366)

Congratulations to The Village Idiots, the only team to correctly identify all
25 songs in the main part of the quiz, as well as the two tie-breakers. For
what seems like the first time in a long time, the tie-breakers actually served
their purpose by separating out a winner. Identifying the two tie-breakers
allowed the Village Idiots to edge out Will McCorry, who also identified all
twenty five songs in the main part of the quiz, but skipped the tie-breakers.
Impressive entries by both teams, nonetheless.

Also with impressive scores were the Delphi Trivia Club and DEC And Friends,
each of whom identified all 27 songs but mis-identified one of the artists in
the main part of the quiz.

Overall, I was surprised that the quiz proved more difficult than I
anticipated, especially after my previous Beatles theme quiz (GOLQ-362), in
which every team got a perfect score. Perhaps not having a theme contributed
to the difficulty, and kept some regulars from participating this month.
Still, in spite of the difficulty, nine songs - a third of the quiz - were
identified by every team. Maybe that is not a bad mix, regarding level of
difficulty.

As always, thanks to everyone who entered. I missed seeing the entries of some
of our favorite participants, and hope all will play again in August. Mike
Weaver has already posted the August quiz (GOLQ #367).

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #362 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>
where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

Your kisses take me
To
#07) Four Coins, The/Dana, Vic: "Shangri-La" (1957) [11] {-} <61>

Note: Full credit was also given for Vic Dana as the artist. I did not
realize, at the time I wrote the quiz, that Vic Dana recorded and charted the
song. Otherwise I would have inserted a song between #05 and #07 to eliminate
Dana alphabetically. However, as the quiz is written, he fits alphabetically
and therefore yields full credit to any team citing him as the artist.

Don't make me live from day to day
Watching the clock that ticks away
Another day, another way
Another reason for me to stay
#08) Four Tops, The: "7 Rooms Of Gloom" (1967) [14] {10} <90><320>

I saw you were standing by your locker
As I went strolling by
Well, I'm not much at flirtin' and I'm not a talker but

Your love for me why not reveal
It's over now but it was grand
#12) G-Clefs, The: "I Understand (Just How You Feel)" (1961/62) [9] {-}
<71><156>

Since that day our love began
I've become a new and happy man
I can hold my head up high

Note: Written by Phil Everly and featured on the Everly Brothers album, "A
Date With The Everly Brothers."? Their version was a favorite of mine before
Hodges recorded the song.

I've thrown away my nights
And wasted all my days
Over you
#15) Holly, Buddy: "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" (1959) [13] {-} <45><188><264>

Note: Written by Paul Anka

It could't last somehow
I had my chance

Don't sigh a sigh for me
Don't ever cry for me
This is goodbye from me
#18) Lee, Brenda: "Losing You" (1963) [6] {13} <88><229>

Note: Still love Brenda's original, but Alison Krauss has, in my opinion, a
fantastic version on her most recent album. Just noticed, while reviewing the
YouTubes below, that the third line should be, "This is goodbye FROM me,"?
not, "This is goodbye FOR me,"? as originally posted. Correction made above.
Seems to be an insignificant difference, but if any team claims they missed the
song because of that, let me know and I will adjust the score.

#24) Scott, Jack: "It Only Happened Yesterday" (1960) [13] {-}

Train whistle blowing
Makes a sleepy noise
Underneath their blankets
Go all the girls and boys
#25) Seekers, The: "Morningtown Ride" (1967) [44] {-} <112>

------------
Tie-Breakers

I stole away and cried
I stole away and cried
The tears, they fell like raindrops
The night my old friend died
#T1) Dian and the Greenbriar Boys/Country Gentlemen: "He Was A Friend"/"He Was A Friend Of Mine"
(1963)

Note: From the self titled album, considered a rare but valued classic by
1960's folk music purists. Greenbriar Boys included founder John Herald,
considered one of the finest flatpickers of the era, and who provided many
impressive guitar solo breaks on albums by Ian & Silvia and others. Full
credit was also given for the Country Gentlemen as the artist because, although
they were not my intended artist (I was not even aware they recorded the song),
their version is similar and their lyrics match mine perfectly. There are many
other cover versions, some of which were named by several teams, with lyrics
that were close but different enough not to qualify.

They found a shattered empty rifle
And the shawl she used to wear
But they never found his Julie
And they never found
They never found
The hungry bear
#T2) New Christy Minstrels, The: "Julianne" (1963?)

Note: From the album "New Christy Minstrels Tell Tall Tales! Legends &
Nonsense."? I have long been a sucker for this somewhat corny but intriguing
ballad about a handsome but poor young man who promises his sweetheart,
Julianne, that he will search for silver to "fashion her a ring,"? but instead
has a tryst with another woman, leaving Julianne alone in their cabin in the
woods. You can tell by the lyrics I posted that the story does not end well.
The lyrics were written by founder and leader Randy Sparks of the New Christy
