Thanks, but I am not understanding how the hardest-question tie-breaking works. Marc and I both answered a, b, and d correctly and his other two correct answers were solos. The GOLQ Institute <list@golq.org>: Sep 14 05:50PM -0700 RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #367(GOLQ367) Congratulations to the EJ's, Really Rockin' In Boston and Village Idiots for scoring a perfect 500++ on this quiz. Will McCorry finished strongly, missing only one tie-breaker. A special "Hello" to Jamie & Carol Lubin and Ron Crandall. Both teams are GOLQ legacies and was great to see them in the participant field again Actually, everyone did well on what I thought would be a more difficult than usual quiz. Essentially, there were no lyrics on a lyrics quiz. While I thought I would be soundly pilloried for that, all entrants had the forbearance not to point it out. I regard that as carte blanche to do it again in the future (insert evil laugh here). With my perceived level of difficulty in mind I mentioned the answer distribution clue. Every answer in the regular portion of the quiz represented a letter of the alphabet in order. The exception was "X", for which there is no GOLQ eligible song in the "regular" portion of the quiz. I am aware of a couple of tie-breaker possibilities, but they would be waaaay too obscure to use (insert another evil laugh here). The 4 song mini-theme was "Batman", chosen to note the passing of Adam West in June of this year. Nearly everyone mentioned this and the alphabetic sequencing. To hear all 27 songs in their entirety go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0x-SSGH5jg&list=PLOM9kp_8LqisnE00JP5EQi7e5Bw2wjrbs The usual Youtube caveats apply; versions, availability etc. Songs may not be in exact order. I hope everyone had fun with this one. He went right to the source and asked Paul Evans! This was Paul's response: "Hi, and thanks for writing. I believe that the two Susan's did cut one more record before going their separate ways, possibly on Evergreen Records (now defunct). They were part of the Ray Charles Singers, a chorale that did much TV work like the Perry Como and the Jackie Gleason shows. Sue and Sue were hired by the writers, as was I, to make a demo of 'Seven Little Girls'. The demo was released 'as is' on Guaranteed Records under the name 'Paul Evans and the Curls', but Joe Carlton, the owner and president of Guaranteed, decided that it was easier to build a solo career for me rather than tying me to the two girls. I know that Joe copyrighted the name, the "Curls" so I'm not sure how Sue and Sue managed to record again - for a different label - under that name. Anyway, I hope this info helps you out. Paul Evans" Howard recently updated this information "I do have a couple of updates regarding The Curls. First, they actually recorded two singles (not one) on Everest (not Evergreen): "Why Didn't I Go"/"Imaginez Vous" and "Like a Waterfall"/"He's My Hero". All are available on YouTube. The show ran from 1966 to 1968 and I admit was a guilty pleasure of mine. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-09.mp3 #09) Impressions, The: "I'm So Proud" (1964) [14] {n/c} <56><246><318> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-10.mp3 #10) Jan & Dean: "Popsicle" (1966) [21] {-} <32> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-11.mp3 #11) Knockouts, The: "Darling Lorraine" (1959/60) [46] {-} <21><293> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-12.mp3 #12) Little Joey & The Flips: "Bongo Stomp" (1962) [33] {-} <56> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-13.mp3 #13) Mamas & The Papas, The: "Creeque Alley" (1967) [5] {-} <89><165><248><309> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-14.mp3 #14) Nervous Norvus: "Ape Call" (1956) [24] {-} <145><198> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-15.mp3 #15) Orbison, Roy: "Blue Angel" (1960) [9] {23} <19><184><317> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-16.mp3 #16) Procol Harum: "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" (1967) [5] {22} <31><108><307> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-17.mp3 #17) Quaker City Boys, The: "Teasin'" (1958) [39] {-} <131> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-18.mp3 #18) Rydell, Bobby: "The Cha-Cha-Cha" (1962) [10] {-} <30><319> As Joel Whitburn points out, the melody and arrangement are essentially the same as "Rinky Dink" for which author credit goes to "D.Clowney". The author credit for this song is to Kal Mann and Dave Appell. Frankly I think Mr. Clowney would have had a legal case here; I have seen infringement cases won for less similar sounding songs. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ367/GOLQ367-19.mp3 #19) Smith, Whistling Jack: "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman" (1967) [20] {-} In proof that we live in bizarre times, I ran across a version of this credited to Pat Boone!! (From the LP of the same name!!!) No lyrics, just the whistling. The term "Batman" or any other related character is not used. The "Boy Genius" voice is probably not that of Burt Ward (no label credit). My guess is that the producers wanted to avoid any royalty discussion with DC comics. The flip side of this is a (surprisingly) not-too-bad ballad "You Only See Her". It can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1xhGqLymC8 ________________________________________________________________________________ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
