Erland Sommarskog <esquel@sommarskog.se>: May 05 10:25PM +0200 Folks, it's time for Rotating Quiz #254. This quiz offers a number of questions with no particular pattern, reason or rhyme. Or theme. Just a bunch of unrelated questions (save for the questions that are related). You are supposed to answer them solely from your knowledge without consulting sources, grandmothers, neighbours or crystal balls. As always, post your answers to the newsgroup. Questions 1-13 are worth three points each. Questions 14a to 14f are worth one points each. The winner of the quiz will get the honour to set RQ255. In case of a tie, I will make a subjective judgement of the incorrect answers. I'm looking into scoring the quiz on Wednesday night, but it could be the day after. The quiz is open until I've posted the score posting. 1. The catalogue of which director includes titles such as "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" and "All About My Mother"? 2. Dalia Grybauskaite is President of Lithuania. Is she married or not? Justify your answer! 3. How did Sophie Chotek von Chotkova and Wognin die? Be sufficiently specific. 4. The debut album of which iconic rocker included titles such as "Spirits in the Night" and "Blinded by the Light"? 5. And, speaking of rock'n'roll, which classic rock group does potassium permanganate make you think of? 6. How many cards in total are there in a game of canasta? 7. Joseph Kony is a true scumbag. Which organisation does he lead? 8. Easter Island belongs to which country? 9. What does CONCACAF organise? 10. In the company of strangers... In which country are you if someone calls out "Gaijin!" and means you? 11. And among which people are you if you are being referred to as "gadjo"? 12. Later this month, with the final on Saturday 13th, is the Eurovision Song Contest. In which city is ESC held this year? 13. And towards the end of the month, the 27th, starts what period that is important for many people on this planet? 14. Reporters Without Borders recently published their World Press Freedom Index where they rank countries from best to worst with regards to the freedom of the press. Your task is to identify the top-ranked country for each continent. To make the question a little easier, for continents with many countries, I will permit you give any of the top countries as specified below: a) Europe (any of the top 3): b) North America (any of the top 2): c) Oceania (the top 1): d) South America (the top 1): e) Africa (any of the top 3): f) Asia (any of the top 3): My definition of continents is strictly geographical. To save space, I don't detail them, but I will leave the hint that there are no trick answers here. -- Erland Sommarskog, Stockholm, esquel@sommarskog.se |
