Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 16 updates in 3 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Sep 27 05:25AM -0500

Although I'm still posting questions written by the Usual Suspects
from last season, the Canadian Inquisition is now two games into its
current season, which is being written by the Misplaced Modifiers.
I have obtained permission to use their questions here, so now
it's time to start to post current-events rounds.

Remember that rounds from Game 8 of the Usual Suspects' season
are active concurrently with this current-events set.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated below, and should be interpreted accordingly. If any
answers have changed due to newer news, you are still expected to
give the answers that were correct on that date.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will
reveal the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Misplaced Modifiers
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2016-05-31 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2016-07-11,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Usual Suspects and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2016-05-31 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

I did not write either of these rounds.

* Game 8, Round 4 - Sports - Foreign-Born NBA Players

In each case, name the player.

1. This 7'6"-tall player's 8-season career in the NBA with the
Houston Rockets is said to have sparked increased interest in
the sport in his home country of China.

2. This South-African-born Canadian 2-time MVP winner never won an
NBA championship during his time spent with the Dallas Mavericks,
Phoenix Suns, and Los Angeles Lakers. He is currently the
general manager of Canada's senior men's basketball team.

3. He is the most successful German player ever to play in the NBA.
He won the NBA championship in 2011 and the MVP award in 2007.
His entire NBA career, 18 seasons so far, has been with the
Dallas Mavericks.

4. These two brothers are Spanish. The older brother is a power
forward and center who's won two NBA titles with the Los Angeles
Lakers in 2009 and '10. That's two more than his younger
brother, named Marc, has managed so far in his career with the
Memphis Grizzlies. Give their surname.

5. This Lithuanian center was a first-round draft pick for the
Toronto Raptors in 2011, and has since played a pivotal part
in their last three playoff runs, despite suffering an injury
in last season's playoff series against the Miami Heat.

6. This Congolese center very recently signed a 4-year, $70,000,000
deal with the Orlando Magic, but you may know him better from
his important role with last season's Toronto Raptors and
his impressive job of replacing an injured <answer 5> in the
playoffs.

7. This Belgian-born point guard, son of an American professional
basketball player and a Dutch model, represented France in
international play but won 4 NBA championship titles with the
San Antonio Spurs. He is also known in entertainment news
circles as the ex-husband of Eva Longoria.

8. Along with <answer 7>, this Argentinian shooting guard has also
won 4 NBA championship titles with the San Antonio Spurs.
He was an integral part of the 2004 Argentinian Olympic team
that won gold by beating the USA in the semifinals and Italy
in the finals.

9. Although this Croatian-born Serbian 3-point specialist finally
won an NBA championship title in 2011 with the Dallas Mavericks,
he is much better known for his 8˝ seasons with the Sacramento
Kings. The Kings retired his #16 jersey.

10. This Croatian player had a full and rewarding career in the
EuroLeague and won two Olympic silver medals before coming to
the NBA and winning 3 NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls,
where he often played the role of the "sixth man".

* Game 8, Round 6 - Literature - Nobel Laureates

In each case name the writer, who has won the Nobel Prize in
Literature.

1. This Canadian short-story writer won the award in 2013, and is
known for stories such as "Boys and Girls", "How I Met My
Husband", and "The Bear Came Over the Mountain". That last
one was the basis of the Canadian movie "Away from Her".

2. Prior to <answer 1>, Canada's only claim to a Nobel in Literature
was this Canadian-born American novelist of works such as
"Herzog", "Humboldt's Gift", and "Henderson the Rain King".

3. "In awarding the prizes", Alfred Nobel wrote in his will, "no
consideration whatever shall be given to the nationality of
the candidates... the most worthy shall receive the prize,
whether he be a Scandinavian or not." And hey, once the
first prizes had been given out, it only took another 12 years
before the Nobel committee gave one to a non-European writer.
Name this Indian novelist, painter, musician, and the author of
"Gitanjali", a collection of 157 poems, known as "Song Offerings"
in English translation.

4. This winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature ran for the
presidency of Peru in 1990, but lost to Alberto Fujimori in the
second round of voting. He's also famous for novels such as
"Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter" and "Conversation in the
Cathedral".

5. The most recent prize going to a British writer was in 2007.
This winner has written science fiction (such as the "Canopus
in Argos: Archives", a 5-book series about societies undergoing
accelerated evolution), but is better known for novels such as
"The Grass is Singing" and "The Golden Notebook".

6. The most recent American writer to receive the prize was in
1993; this author's novels include "Beloved", "The Bluest Eye",
and "Song of Solomon".

7. 1986 was the first time an African writer was given the prize.
This Nigerian author is best known for plays such as "The Lion
and the Jewel" and "Death and the King's Horseman"

8. Two Japanese writers have won the award. One was in 1968,
and is well known for novels such as "The Master of Go" and
"Snow Country". The other was in 1994; his brain-damaged son
has played a large role in his writing, in works such as "A
Personal Matter" and "A Healing Family". Name *either* writer.

9. The only person so far to win both a Nobel Prize and an Oscar
is this Irish dramatist. He won the Oscar in 1938 for adapting
his own play.

10. While this Nobel-winning author has never won an Oscar, he
was employed as a Hollywood screenwriter in the 1930s and 1940s,
receiving credits on movies such as "The Big Sleep" and "To
Have and Have Not".
