The GOLQ Institute <list@golq.org>: Jul 05 11:28AM -0700 RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #353 (GOLQ353) Congratulations to DEC & Friends, Delphi Trivia Club, and Village Idiots, who tied for first with nearly-perfect scores. They only missed #T2, which was a complete stumper for all entrants. Just behind were Really Rockin' In Boston (off the pace by a tiebreaker), followed by The EJs (missing just one regular song). As a few entrants noted, even my quizzes that have "no particular themes" have an implied theme of "homage to the recently departed." In this case, that included songs #01, 02, 08, 12, and 14. Song #20 became part of this group during the running of the quiz. Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed). As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The July 2016 quiz (GOLQ #354) will be posted soon. -- Howard Teitelbaum _____________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The need for you Just to be with you Is the reason why I plead to you #01) Lee Andrews and The Hearts: "Try The Impossible" (1958) [33] {-} <27><151><322> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkKdaF8cPLQ Lee Andrews (Arthur Lee Andrew Thompson) died 3/16/16 at 79. His son Ahmir Thompson, known as Questlove, is a prominent musician and producer. You know my heart will never let you go You know my love for you is on the square When I wake up in the morning, I find you right there #02) The Belmonts: "Tell Me Why" (1961) [18] {-} <33><250> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_F9yXtYAXU (NF&RR, 1957) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioaa8uaeGrY (Belmonts, 1961) Carlo Mastrangelo, the group's baritone (and lead singer on this recording), died 4/4/16 at 78. The song was originally recorded by Norman Fox and The Rob-Roys in 1957, and was written by Buzzy Helfand, the Rob-Roys' bass. Both groups hailed from the Bronx. He's lost in the wilderness He's lost in bitterness #03) James Brown and The Famous Flames: "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" (1966) [8] {1} <91> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAI91vPEChA (T. Montgomery, "I Cried", 1963) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uk5V--cqoAs (JB unreleased, 1964) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f50O871TBds (JB hit version, 1966) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb-B3lsgEfA (JB & Pavarotti live, 2002) Songwriting is credited to Brown and then-girlfriend, Betty Jean Newsome. They offered conflicting accounts of how much each contributed to it. In 1963, Tammy Montgomery (before adopting her stage name of Tammi Terrell) recorded "I Cried" for JB's "Try Me" label; this has the same chord progression, so is arguably a precursor to IAMMMW. Brown recorded an early version (as "It's a Man's World") in 1964. This version remained unreleased until the CD era. Last link is a live version performed in 2002 by JB with Luciano Pavarotti. It's not clingin' to the rocks and ivy planted on their columns now that bind me Or something that somebody said because they thought we fit together walkin' #04) Glen Campbell: "Gentle On My Mind" (1967/68) [39] {-} <53> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGs1IUS7ugg (John Hartford, 1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Clv7X7I09xg (Glen Campbell, 1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Bon3WIhDq4 (JH & GC live) Written & first recorded by John Hartford, appearing on his 1967 LP "Earthwords & Music." The Detroit variation of the jerk that Storball was writing about was evidently dubbed the "pimp jerk." Not surprisingly, he decided to alter the title/lyrics to make the song more radio-friendly. Backing musicians were moonlighting members of Motown's legendary "Funk Brothers." She took my love, said she's not comin' back Thought my world and my sky would all turn to black Now I see the light, I'm wise to her #06) Dion: "Lovers Who Wander" (1962) [3] {16} <129> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzOTVRZElPg I love you so, I always will And in your voice, I hear a choir of carousels #07) The 5th Dimension: "Wedding Bell Blues" (1969) [1] {23} <77><268> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvKzCspqGgQ (Laura Nyro, 1966) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jn5fZIV_ygk (5th Dimension, 1969) Written & first recorded by Laura Nyro in 1966; her single bubbled under at #103. The protagonist's name "Bill" was apropos to the 5th Dimension, as lead singer Marilyn McCoo was then engaged to bandmate Billy Davis Jr. (They've been happily married since 1969.) Ask yourself And ask the friendly dove Why bluebirds mate above #08) Gogi Grant: "Who Are We" (1956) [62] {-} <-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SD1eB8FWfU Gogi died on 3/10/16 at 91. After recording "Who Are We", in November 1955, there was some spare time left in the session. Label owner Herb Newman suggested a song he'd co-written; thus was born her subsequent release, "The Wayward Wind," which was her biggest hit. The EJs noted that the label also credits Buddy Bregman's Orchestra and Chorus. I don't need her Don't need her kind of heartaches and pain She's gonna have to see Things now can never be The same again #09) Herman's Hermits: "I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving" (1968) [22] {-} <131> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtMKA7Q7BoI Oh, I could never, never justify All the tears I made you cry But I do regret it #10) The Hollies: "Sorry Suzanne" (1969) [56] {-} <124><206> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30EH0mUIOw4 Interesting trivia from the RRiB team: The Hollies are now one of the oldest Top 40 groups in which no one in the classic lineup has passed away. The better-known was Paul Kantner, who led the group through most of its Airplane/Starship incarnations. The other was vocalist Signe Toly Anderson, who left after "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off" (their first album). Signe's replacement was the lead singer of The Great Society, Grace Slick. Grace wrote & sang lead on this song. Time to blow the smoke away, look at the sky again Time to let our friends know we'd like to begin again Time to send a message across the land and sea #13) The Kingston Trio: "Ally Ally Oxen Free" (1963) [61] {-} <157> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65sXJwKEQcQ I gotta be there in the morning Spruced up and looking in my prime Girls, come and kiss me Show how you'll miss me #14) Julius LaRosa: "Get Me To The Church On Time" (1956) [89] {-} <-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPNQuOSRa0o He died 5/12/16 at 86, having survived and thrived after his infamous ouster by Arthur Godfrey in 1953.
