Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 5 updates in 3 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Jul 04 01:44AM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2016-05-30,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Usual Suspects and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2016-05-31 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

I wrote one of these rounds.

* Game 2, Round 9 - Science, or is it Science & Leisure? - Cat Pictures

It is well known that the principal uses of the Internet are
watching pornography and looking at pictures of cats. Since we are
totally family-values-oriented in this league, we'll concentrate
on the kittehs. Watch your table talk in this round.

For the first two questions in this round, we'll name a breed of
cat and ask you to indicate the picture on the handout:

http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/2-9/meow.pdf

(Hey, at least it's in color this time.)

1. Abyssinian.

2. Sphynx.

Please complete questions #1-2 before decoding the rot13 for #3-6.
For these questions we'll give you a picture number, and you have
to tell us which breed is shown. Just the breed, not the coloring;
these are one-word answers.

3. Cvpgher friragrra.

4. Gur sbhegrragu cvpgher.

5. Gur arkg cvpgher nsgre gung.

6. Cvpgher ryrira.

Please complete questions #1-6 before decoding the rot13 for #7-10.
These remaining questions will not be about specific breeds but
rather about the distinctive coloration and markings exhibited by
certain cats, both pure and mixed breeds.

So there were 8 decoys. Decode the rot13 to see what they are
and identify the pictures if you like for fun, but for no points.

** Game 2, Round 10 - Challenge Round - Brought to you by Fords

This is the challenge round, and your categories are Ford, Fords,
Fords, Fords, Fords, and fords. Naturally, an answer of "Ford"
is not sufficient on any question.

* A. Canadiana: Ford

A1. Officially, Rob Ford was Mayor of Toronto for 4 years,
from December 1 of 2010 until the same date in 2014.
But his practical power was ended earlier in a special
action by the city council. Within 2 months, give the
month and year when they reduced Ford to a figurehead.

A2. After his term as mayor, Rob Ford became a city councillor
again. Give the *number* of his ward.

* B. History: Fords

B1. Who killed Jesse James?

B2. When this man was born, his name was Leslie Lynch King Jr.
Under what name did he become famous?

* C. Literature: Fords

C1. In what futuristic novel are dates given according to
"the year of our Ford", meaning Henry Ford?

C2. This British writer lived from 1873 to 1939. His original
surname was Hueffer, but he most certainly fits the category
of the round. His best-known works include the novel "The
Good Soldier" and the "Parade's End" series. Who was he?

* D. Sports: Fords

D1. In major-league sports in the US, which team plays home
games in a facility with the name Ford on it? City and
team name required.

D2. This pitcher for the New York Yankees in the 1950s and 1960s
set a career record for winning percentage that still holds,
with 236 wins and only 106 losses. Name him.

* E. Entertainment: Fords

E1. Movies starring this Canadian-born actor, who was married
for a while to Eleanor Powell, included "Gilda", "The Big
Heat", and the original "3:10 to Yuma". One of his last
appearances was in "Superman" (1978) as Jonathan Kent.
Who was he?

E2. John Ford won the Oscar for Best Director 4 times, a record
that still stands. One win was for "Stagecoach". Name any
of the other three.

* F. Geography: fords

F1. What's the capital city of Connecticut?

F2. Speaking of Connecticut, what place name in Connecticut
also occurs both in England and in Ontario -- with all
three places being connected to the same writer?

The date when they were posted here was purely a coincidence.

Misrepresentation of American Indians on movies and TV, as well
as the ongoing siege at Wounded Knee. (Anything along these lines
was sufficient.) 4 for Marc, Pete, Dan, and Calvin.

> 2. Who declined the Best Actor Oscar the previous year -- the
> first person ever to decline an Academy Award?

George C. Scott. (For "Patton".) 4 for Marc, Dan, and Calvin.

> 3. Turning down an Oscar is one thing, but in 1657 this man declined
> the British crown when it was offered to him! Name him.

Oliver Cromwell. 4 for Peter, Pete, Dan, and Calvin.

He was already head of state, but opposed the monarchy. We needed
both names because the following year his son Richard succeeded him
as head of state.

> in the House of Lords -- because, he claimed, remaining in
> England during the winter months to fulfill his role as a

John Cleese. 4 for Marc and Peter. 2 for Calvin.

He received the award but not the money.

> in 1958 when the Soviet Union threatened that he wouldn't
> be allowed to reenter the country if he went to Stockholm to
> receive the award. Who was he?

Boris Pasternak. 4 for Erland, Marc, Peter, and Pete.

(Yes, another "Dr. Zhivago" question. The novel was banned in the USSR.)

> battle possible today on the cultural front is the battle for
> the peaceful coexistence of the two cultures, that of the East
> and that of the West." Who?

Jean-Paul Sartre. 4 for Peter.

> 8. This man was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973, jointly
> with Henry Kissinger, but refused to accept it -- simply because

Le Duc Tho. (Either "Le" or "Tho" was sufficient.) 4 for Erland,
Peter, Pete, and Dan.

> He said it was because candidates for the prize were supposed

Sinclair Lewis.

> 10. What honor has been declined by all of the following:

> T.E. Lawrence, Henry Moore, and George Bernard Shaw?

Knighthood. 4 for Erland (yes!), Marc, Peter, Pete, Björn,
and Calvin.

RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #353 (GOLQ353)

Congratulations to DEC & Friends, Delphi Trivia Club, and Village Idiots, who
tied for first with nearly-perfect scores. They only missed #T2, which was a
complete stumper for all entrants.

Just behind were Really Rockin' In Boston (off the pace by a tiebreaker),
followed by The EJs (missing just one regular song).

As a few entrants noted, even my quizzes that have "no particular themes" have
an implied theme of "homage to the recently departed." In this case, that
included songs #01, 02, 08, 12, and 14. Song #20 became part of this group
during the running of the quiz.

Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed).

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The July 2016 quiz (GOLQ #354)
will be posted soon.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #353 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

The need for you
Just to be with you

#01) Lee Andrews and The Hearts: "Try The Impossible"
(1958) [33] {-} <27><151><322>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkKdaF8cPLQ

Lee Andrews (Arthur Lee Andrew Thompson) died 3/16/16 at 79. His son Ahmir
Thompson, known as Questlove, is a prominent musician and producer.

You know my heart will never let you go
You know my love for you is on the square
When I wake up in the morning, I find you right there
#02) The Belmonts: "Tell Me Why" (1961) [18] {-} <33><250>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_F9yXtYAXU (NF&RR, 1957)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioaa8uaeGrY (Belmonts, 1961)

Carlo Mastrangelo, the group's baritone (and lead singer on this recording),
died 4/4/16 at 78. The song was originally recorded by Norman Fox and The
Rob-Roys in 1957, and was written by Buzzy Helfand, the Rob-Roys' bass.
Both groups hailed from the Bronx.

He's lost in the wilderness
He's lost in bitterness
#03) James Brown and The Famous Flames: "It's A Man's Man's Man's World"
(1966) [8] {1} <91>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAI91vPEChA (T. Montgomery, "I Cried", 1963)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uk5V--cqoAs (JB unreleased, 1964)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f50O871TBds (JB hit version, 1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb-B3lsgEfA (JB & Pavarotti live, 2002)

Songwriting is credited to Brown and then-girlfriend, Betty Jean Newsome.
They offered conflicting accounts of how much each contributed to it.

In 1963, Tammy Montgomery (before adopting her stage name of Tammi Terrell)
recorded "I Cried" for JB's "Try Me" label; this has the same chord
progression, so is arguably a precursor to IAMMMW.

Brown recorded an early version (as "It's a Man's World") in 1964.
This version remained unreleased until the CD era.

Last link is a live version performed in 2002 by JB with Luciano Pavarotti.

It's not clingin' to the rocks and ivy planted on their columns now that bind me

#04) Glen Campbell: "Gentle On My Mind" (1967/68) [39] {-} <53>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGs1IUS7ugg (John Hartford, 1967)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Clv7X7I09xg (Glen Campbell, 1967)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Bon3WIhDq4 (JH & GC live)

Written & first recorded by John Hartford, appearing on his 1967 LP
"Earthwords & Music."

When they see me walkin' down the street (hey, hey, hey)
When the fellas want to speak (hey, hey, hey)
On their faces they wear a silly smirk
#05) The Capitols: "Cool Jerk" (1966) [7] {2} <6><105>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27PydomerjM

Written by group member Donald Storball. The Detroit variation of the jerk
that Storball was writing about was evidently dubbed the "pimp jerk." Not
surprisingly, he decided to alter the title/lyrics to make the song more
radio-friendly. Backing musicians were moonlighting members of Motown's
legendary "Funk Brothers."

She took my love, said she's not comin' back
Thought my world and my sky would all turn to black
Now I see the light, I'm wise to her
#06) Dion: "Lovers Who Wander" (1962) [3] {16} <129>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzOTVRZElPg

I love you so, I always will
And in your voice, I hear a choir of carousels
#07) The 5th Dimension: "Wedding Bell Blues" (1969) [1] {23} <77><268>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvKzCspqGgQ (Laura Nyro, 1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jn5fZIV_ygk (5th Dimension, 1969)

Written & first recorded by Laura Nyro in 1966; her single bubbled under
at #103. The protagonist's name "Bill" was apropos to the 5th Dimension,
as lead singer Marilyn McCoo was then engaged to bandmate Billy Davis Jr.
(They've been happily married since 1969.)

Ask yourself
And ask the friendly dove
Why bluebirds mate above
#08) Gogi Grant: "Who Are We" (1956) [62] {-} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SD1eB8FWfU

Gogi died on 3/10/16 at 91. After recording "Who Are We", in November 1955,
there was some spare time left in the session. Label owner Herb Newman
suggested a song he'd co-written; thus was born her subsequent release,
