Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 12 updates in 3 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Jun 06 03:00AM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-12-08,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Bloor St. Irregulars,
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my recent companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

** Final, Round 9 - Entertainment

* 2015 Movie Plots

Here are some plots from 2015 movies, *none of which is "Spectre"*.
In each case, you provide the movie title.

1. Ethan Hunt and his friends must foil Solomon Lane's attempts
to establish an international terrorist organization made up
of former intelligence agents.

2. American Napoleon Solo and Russian Illya Kuryakin must team up
to foil Victoria Vinciguerra's attempts to sell a nuclear
warhead to ex-Nazis in post-WW2 Europe.

3. CIA analyst Susan Cooper must become a field agent in order to
stop arms dealer Rayna Boyanov from selling a nuclear warhead
to terrorists in present-day Europe.

* 1990s Sitcoms

From the promotional photo, name the sitcom from the 1990s.

4. http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/f-9/sitcom/4.jpg
5. http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/f-9/sitcom/5.jpg
6. http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/f-9/sitcom/6.jpg

* Celebrity Spouses

Given the name of two celebrities, name the person who was married
to both of them.

7. Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively.
8. Jack Cassidy, Marty Ingels.
9. Cynda Williams, Angelina Jolie.

* Movie Trivia

10. Which film from the 1970s has a script that features the
following direction?

"Start with the tone... go up a full tone. Down a
major third. Now drop an octave. Up a perfect fifth."

11. What *first name* is shared by two different male actors who
play the two characters that are #1 and #2 on the AFI's list
of the Greatest Movie Villains of all time?

12. Which 2013 movie broke the record for the movie with the most
uses of the F-word in a non-documentary movie, with a whopping
569 F-bombs? Hint: There's an animal in the title.

* Monty Python

In the original game, a short video clip from a Monty Python
sketch was played, followed by a question. For questions #13-14,
I'll provide the dialogue instead.

13. [John Cleese and Michael Palin]

"Hello. I wish to register a complaint. Hello? Miss?"
"What do you mean, 'miss'?"
"I'm sorry, I have a cold. I wish to make a complaint."
"Sorry, we're closing for lunch."
"Never mind that, my lad. I wish to complain about
this parrot what I purchased not half an hour ago from
this very boutique."

What type of parrot, "pining for the fjords", is the "resting"
bird in the cage? (No, don't try "a dead one". Two words
required.)

14. [John Cleese and Eric Idle]

"Next, please. One at a time, please."
"There is only me, sir."
"So there is. Take a..."
"Seat?"
"Seat! Take a seat. So! You want to join my
mountaineering expedition, do you?"
"Me, sir?"
"Yes."
"Yes, I'd very much like to, sir."
"Jolly good, jolly good. And how about you?"
"There is only me, sir."
"Well, bang goes *his* application, then."

The man behind the desk is planning an expedition to the two
peaks of where?

15. The clip for #15 had no dialogue, but it also features John
Cleese, and perhaps the scripted stage direction will be
sufficient:

A city gent comes into shop. He has a silly walk and
keeps doing little jumps and then three long paces
without moving the top of his body.

So, where does this man work?

Welcome to Rotating Quiz #223.

I'd like to thank Chris Johnson for running RQ 222 and for writing a
contest that allowed me to win. The winner of RQ 223, in turn, will
be the first choice to set RQ 224, in whatever manner they prefer.

Please answer these questions based only on your own knowledge;
put all of your answers in a single posting, quoting the question
before each one. Answer slates must be posted by noon Toronto time
(zone -4) on Saturday, June 11, which gives you 5 days and over
20 hours from the time of posting.

In this quiz, I will give you the original name of something or
someone. All of these names either have been officially changed
or have been superseded in common use by a stage name, pseudonym,
or the like. In some cases this happened more than once.

Keep this in mind throughout the quiz: all of the odd-numbered
questions are about things that *still exist* (not necessarily
in exactly their original form) or people who are still alive.
You must give their current name as usually used. Conversely,
the even-numbered questions are for things that *no longer exist*
or people who have died. You must give their name as it was
commonly used when they died or ceased existing.

Where the original name was not in English, in some cases other
renderings may exist; you are expected to figure them out.

Answers score 2 points each, or 1 point if misspelled. In case of
a tie, the first tiebreaker is who scored on the hardest questions;
the second tiebreaker is who scored in the most categories; and
the third tiebreaker is who posted first.

Manta rays are a different species with a different article.

as almost correct. 4 for Dan Blum, Bruce, Marc, Peter, and Jason.
3 for Stephen.
