This weekend, the Western Swing continues as the Sprint Cup Series will make their first visit of the year to Phoenix International Raceway.  Coverage of the Good Sam 500k will start at 3 p.m. Sunday on FOX; the event can also be heard on your local MRN affiliate or SiriusXM Channel 90. Drivers will compete for 312 laps (312 miles, 502.415 kilometers) en route to the checkered flag.

Records and facts

Last year, Kevin Harvick started from pole and led 224 laps to take his fourth consecutive win at Phoenix.  Aside from Jamie McMurray just getting his nose in front of Harvick on a restart, Harvick led from lap 196 to the finish.

McMurray ended up finishing second, his best finish of 2015.  Ryan Newman was third, followed by Kasey Kahne and Kurt Busch to round out an all-Chevrolet top 5.

Kevin Harvick is the all-time winningest driver at Phoenix with seven wins, including five of the last seven visits to the Sonoran Desert.  Jimmie Johnson is second with four Phoenix victories, while Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who won last fall's rain-shortened race, has three wins.

Say What?!

"Phoenix is a fun little track.  It's been a little tricky since the repave a few years back.  You've got to have rear grip or you feel like you're racing on ice.  Being able to manage that is key there.  You've got to keep your tires underneath you.  You do that and you'll have a good day." - Cilnt Bowyer

"Phoenix hasn't been too good to me. Or vice versa, I'm not sure. I just haven't had the best runs there. I like the race track – it's very unique – and I like racing there. I've just got to try to find some more speed. And a lot of that's on me. I'm hoping this car will suit me a little bit better when we do get there. We'll find that out very shortly.

"I imagine the aero changes will have less effect at Phoenix. Turn 1 has a lot of banking to hold you, so that'll be about mechanical. You do have a lot of entry speed getting into Turn 3, and it's very flat. So, I feel like that's going to be where the different aero package will show up. That being said, you might talk to somebody else and they'll tell you the exact opposite, but that would be my opinion heading into it." - Chris Buescher

"Phoenix is a really fun race track. It's a mile track that races more like a short-track. I'm looking forward to getting there this weekend with our AdvoCare Ford. We have made a lot of gains so far in 2016 and I'm confident that we can continue that upward momentum this weekend. - Trevor Bayne

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: Here's a somewhat random INDYCAR-based question.  INDYCAR has used many different types of promotion in the past.  One of the more unusual methods of the creation of a series song.  What was this song called and who sang it?

Check back tomorrow for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: In 2005, St. Petersburg made its debut on the IndyCar Series schedule.  Ryan Briscoe dominated the race for Target Chip Ganassi Racing, but couldn't close the deal.  What happened?

A: Briscoe was leading the race with nine laps to go when Tony Kanaan challenged him on the stretch down to turn 10.  Kanaan dived to the inside from a fairly long way back.  The two cars collided and Briscoe slid into the tires.  The crash can be seen here.  While the incident did not appear to be that serious, it was enough to put Briscoe out of the race.
