NASCAR Final Ratings For Fontana Continue Declines

NASCAR's final "Nielsen bump" for Fontana couldn't stop a season of declines for the sport on television. The 4.0 final rating for the event was down seven percent in both ratings and viewership from last season, continuing a trend on FOX that's been troubling for the sport. So far, no Sprint Cup race this season has posted a ratings increase despite a highly competitive rules package and two photo finishes in the first five events.

If there's any small consolation, at least the last three weeks have posted declines in the single digits. NASCAR's XFINITY Series race from the same weekend at Fontana also posted a small increase in both ratings and viewership, the first time that's happened for the second-tier series in 2016.

The sport hopes their "falloff" stops with the transition to FOX Sports 1 this weekend for the sixth Cup race of the season at Martinsville.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:  In 1995, Chad Little was in position to claim victory in the Sundrop 400 at Hickory.  However, it just wasn't meant to be.  What took Little out of the lead and allowed Johnny Benson to take his only career short track win in the Busch Grand National Series?

Check back Tuesday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Friday's Answer:

Q:  In the 1983 Warner W. Hodgdon 500 at Rockingham, Joe Ruttman had a good run early on in the Mike Curb-owned No. 98 Levi Garrett Buick.  However, his day ended against the wall.  What happened?

A: Ruttman was running quite well, but his engine decided to turn traitor and expire entering turn 3.  Ruttman then spun in his own fluids and went hard into the wall.  The car got airborne as a result of the hit, but did not roll.  Harry Gant was also wrapped up in the crash which can be seen here.

The engine issues alone likely would have ended Ruttman's day; the crash made continuing on an impossibility.  Gant continued and eventually finished fifth, three laps off the pace.
