Frontstretch Folio: Auto Club 400
by Phil Allaway

This weekend, the Western Swing concludes as the Sprint Cup Series pulls into Auto Club Speedway for the Auto Club 400 (note that while yes, Auto Club refers to AAA, it refers to AAA of Southern California).  Drivers will race for 400 miles (200 laps) around the two-mile D-shaped oval.  The race can be seen on FOX starting at 3 p.m. EDT (the Green Flag is scheduled to fly around 3:50 p.m.).  It can also be listened to on MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel 90).

Records and facts

Last year, Kurt Busch was leading late in the race and nearly a lock to pick up his first win of the year.  However, NASCAR threw a caution coming to the white flag for a small piece of metal debris exiting turn 4, which set up a Green-White-Checker.

Following a second debris caution on the restart, Brad Keselowski passed Kurt Busch on the final lap of the race after the second Green-White-Checker restart to take the win.  It was the only lap of the race that he managed to lead.  Kevin Harvick finished second, while Kurt Busch had to settle for third.  Paul Menard and Ryan Newman rounded out the top 5.

Jimmie Johnson is the winningest driver in the history of Auto Club Speedway, claiming five wins on the high speed track.  That includes his first Cup victory back in 2002.  Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth both have three wins.  Busch also claimed his first Cup victory in Fontana back in 2005.  The now-retired Jeff Gordon also has three wins in Fontana, including the inaugural California 500 in 1997.

Say What?!

"I'm looking forward to getting to Fontana. I love what we're doing in the sport with the new aero package and I think we're seeing some good racing. It's been a blast. The package allows for all kinds of great things. We're all having a lot of fun and I hope that continues this weekend. Fontana is another track with multiple grooves, so it should be another fun race. Jimmie is good there and I hear he threw out a challenge to us last week, so there's some extra incentive. We've had success with the Batman car in the past, so hopefully we can continue that." - Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

"It's always special heading back to California. I always have some close friends that come out to the track so it's always great to see them. That first win will forever be one of the most special moments in my career. It was such a great feeling to win in my home state and then to follow it up over the years with four more wins. It's a pretty special place for me personally." - Jimmie Johnson

"Fontana's been putting on great shows. You can run everywhere there. But in trying to find the right line to run, I try to dumb it down to two things – trying to get as much on-throttle time as possible with as little wheel in the car as possible. If I can keep the wheel unwound and keep the car free, and have as much on-throttle time as possible, you can accomplish what you need. And that's what we'll be looking for." - Landon Cassill

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: Michael Waltrip Racing's difficult 2007 season got in gear in Fontana.  Team owner Michael Waltrip failed to qualify, while Dale Jarrett took a Past Champions' Provisional to make the race, then finished four laps down in 32nd.  David Reutimann was having the best weekend of the three until finding trouble late.  What happened?

Check back tomorrow for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: Auto Club Speedway was constructed on the site of the Kaiser Steel Mill, a World War II-era mill built to supplement the war effort.  What was the only artifact left on the property from its steel mill days when the track opened?

A: The only notable artifiact left from the steel mill days at that point was a water tower that was located right in the middle of the infield.  It has since been demolished and replaced by a new building.
