Frontstretch Folio: Kobalt 400
by Phil Allaway

This weekend begins the Western Swing, three consecutive races in the Pacific Time Zone.  This weekend, the series will make their lone visit to Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  Coverage of the Kobalt 400 will start at 3 p.m. Sunday on FOX; the event can also be heard on your local PRN affiliate or SiriusXM Channel 90. Drivers will compete for 267 laps (400.5 miles) en route to the checkered flag.

Records and facts

Last year, Kevin Harvick started 18th, but charged to the front to lead a race-high 142 laps.  He was in control for much of the final quarter of the race, but didn't take the lead for good until lap 252 due to pit strategy.  From there, he held off Martin Truex, Jr. to take the win.  Behind Harvick and Truex was Ryan Newman in third, followed by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Denny Hamlin.

Jimmie Johnson has the most victories all-time at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with four, including three in a row from 2005-2007.  His most recent win there was in 2010.  Matt Kenseth has three Las Vegas victories

Say What?!

"We're definitely in a learning stage right now with the new downforce package and me going to some tracks that I've never run a Cup car on. But we're making progress each week and will continue to do so. Our Love's Travel Stops Ford Fusion took a really hard hit at Daytona, so we definitely want a better finish for Love's this week in Vegas.

"I would imagine that almost nothing is going to apply from Atlanta last week to Vegas this week. Hearing what I'm hearing from the Vegas test notes, it's going to be just brutally fast, lots of grip, lots of time on the throttle and a lot of corner speed. I've been running a lot of time on the simulator, and there's just a huge difference between the two." - Chris Buescher

"I'm looking forward to heading out West and racing at Las Vegas. I think when you walk into the garage you can sense all the excitement from the fans as they look on from the Neon Garage. We have extra track time on Thursday with testing so hopefully we can learn some things that will help us with future mile-and-a-half tracks. Our main goal this year is to be consistent which hopefully will keep us high in the points so we can make the Chase in 2016." - Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.

"The bumps in Turn 1 at Las Vegas are kind of tricky. You can either drive around them or drive under them. Turns 3 and 4 are pretty smooth, nice and sweeping. It's mostly the bumps in Turns 1 and 2 that makes for the key to being fast there and repetitively fast. Sometimes you can hit it right and then the next lap, you may not hit it right which creates riding issues making it all pointless. It's imperative in the race to get over them every time." - Ryan Newman

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: The 2008 Craftsman Truck Series championship seemed to be one in which no one wanted to win.  Johnny Benson was in position to solidify his points lead late in the Qwik Liner Las Vegas 350 when trouble struck.  What happened?

Check back tomorrow for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: Before his retirement, Jeff Gordon was often referred to as someone who would always find new places to install SAFER Barriers.  Sure enough, he found a place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  Where was it, and how did he figure it out?

A: With five laps to go in the UAW-Dodge 400, Gordon found a place in need of softer walls on the backstretch.  On a restart, Gordon and Matt Kenseth had contact exiting turn 2.   Gordon then spun and hit the inside wall at the mid-backstretch gap where emergency vehicles can enter the track.  That particular piece of wall did not have a SAFER Barrier.  The crash can be seen here.

Gordon walked away from the crash, but took a little time to get out of his Nicorette Chevrolet.
