RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #348 (GOLQ348)

Congratulations to Dale Latimer and the Delphi Trivia Club, who, with scores
of 500++, took first place in this quiz. Will McCorry, with a score of 500+.,
was close behind. Five other entries had near-perfect scores (see below).

The theme for this quiz was artists born in December. The artists for all of
the songs were either singers born in December or groups containing at least
one reasonably well-known member or a member who made a major contribution
to the record who was born in December. By major contribution, I mean singing
lead, writing or co-writing the song, or playing a prominently heard instru-
ment on the recording. Or just being a fairly famous person for being in the
group but didn't make a more major contribution than others in the group for
their represented song (examples - Abdul "Duke" Fakir and Davy Jones).

GOLQ oldtimers may recall that I used a theme of June birthdays in GOLQ233,
although not all of the songs in that quiz fit that theme. Both then and now,
I learned several of the December birthdays from a list at:

http://lpintop.tripod.com/oldiesconnection/id5.html

Others came from the Whitburn "Top Pop Singles" book (2009 edition) or facts
I've picked up over the years.

A few entries identified at least part of the theme, but some of them only
focused on the zodiac clues rather than the calendar month clue. Will McCorry
said it most accurately:

The main theme is that solo artists and one or more group members
were born in December. The title of the album on which song #18 was
released in the U.S. is 'December's Children (And Everybody's)'.
And the December zodiac signs of Sagittarius (artist of song #19) and
Capricorn (part of the name of the album that song #T1 appears on --
'Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.') are also represented.

You may be wondering why I chose December birthdays for a January quiz. After
all, I could have done January with Elvis and a lot of my other favorites.
It all started with Frank Sinatra, who would have turned 100 on December 12,
2015. I knew I had to put him in this GOLQ. And then I remembered two other
singers from Northern New Jersey, Connie Francis and Dionne Warwick, who were
also born on December 12 and decided to include them. And then I thought of
Brenda Lee, similar in style to Connie Francis when they both started out,
whose birthday is a day earlier, although she's from a lot further south than
New Jersey. And Sinatra's Rat Pack crony Sammy Davis, Jr., born on December 8,
but ultimately not used in this GOLQ. And so on, and so on, as I began
associating birthdays and realized that I had almost enough for a GOLQ theme.
Thus, it was natural to complete the GOLQ with this theme.

Two of the songs I chose were to also honor other artists associated with them
that were also born in December. One of them was actively recording in the
GOLQ era but didn't have any charting singles until later. The other one is
more closely associated with this particular song than the artist used in this
quiz but never charted with it. Although he had a lot of GOLQ-era hits, his
name is in a part of the alphabet that I thought had enough songs.

Team Teitelbaum noted with their entry the birthdays of the various singers
and group members. I have added this information for songs they didn't ident-
ify plus additional group members born in December for some that they did
identify.

GOLQ348's mean score was 448.62, and the median was 496.

My thanks to everyone who participated.

Howard Teitelbaum has posted GOLQ349.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #348 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: Title (year[s]) [peak position on Pop chart] {peak R&B}

[-] = did not make pop chart
{-} = did not make R&B chart
{F} = made R&B chart as a flip side
{n/c} = no Billboard R&B chart published during this recording's period
of peak popularity
===============================================================================

You don't know how many times I wish that I had told you
You don't know how many times I wish that I could hold you
You don't know how many times I wish that I could mold you into someone
#01) Association, The: "Cherish" (1966) [1] {-}

Team Teitelbaum (TT): Terry Kirkman, who wrote this song & sang lead, was
born on 12/12.

Regina (RL): Also, drummer Ted Bluechel was born on 12/2.

This is one of three different soft rock songs called "Cherish" that I know.
The others are post-GOLQ hits by Kool and the Gang (#2 in 1985) and Madonna
(#2 in 1989). I actually didn't know the Madonna one until I came across a
YouTube by cast members of the TV show GLEE that is a medley of the Associa-
tion and Madonna songs called "Cherish." In addition to making the Top 2 of
the Billboard Hot 100, all three of these songs have been #1 on the Billboard
Adult Contemporary chart, but it wasn't the Association version of this song
that reached this spot. It was a 1971 remake by David Cassidy that made it
there, as well as going to #9 on the Hot 100.

You told me when my girl was untrue
I loaned you money when the funds weren't too cool
I talked your folks out of making you cut off your hair
#02) Beach Boys, The: "Friends" (1968) [47] {-}

TT: Carl Wilson (lead vocals here) was born on 12/21. Also, Dennis Wilson
was born on 12/4.

I chose this song because it was one of the few in which both Carl and Denni
s either sang lead (Carl) or co-wrote it (along with brother Brian and group
member Al Jardine). Plus, it had never been in a GOLQ before. This is the
first of three songs from the 1967-1968 time frame used in this GOLQ that
turned out to be lower-charting than I had thought they had been, based on
their airplay in the Washington, DC, area. All three were among the worst-
performing in this quiz.

As with "Cherish," I know multiple other songs called "Friends." These
include different songs by Elton John, Feather, the Cyrkle (although it
may have been a solo recording by group member Don Dannemann), and Bette
Midler (who was born on 12/1).

I'm crossing you in style
Some day
#03) Butler, Jerry: "Moon River" (1961/62) [11] {14}

TT: Born on 12/8.

I chose this song because the most famous version of this song was done by
Andy Williams, who was born on 12/3.

Jessica Raine: Written for the movie "Breakfast At Tiffany's".

Well she dances to the bop
She dances to the stroll
She dances to the walk
She can rock and roll
#04) Cannon, Freddy: "Tallahassee Lassie" (1959) [6] {13}

TT: Born on 12/4.

It's right that I should care about you
And try to make you happy when you're blue
#05) Clark, Dave, Five: "Because" (1964) [3] {n/c}

TT: Dave Clark was born on 12/15.
RL: Also, lead singer and keyboard player Mike Smith was born on 12/6.

As I've pointed out before, this is one of three songs titles I know of
that the Beatles and the Dave Clark Five have in common, although they are
different songs. The others are "Don't Let Me Down" and "Glad All Over."
And as I've also mentioned before, the title is not spelled cuz, cos, b/c,
cause, or 'cause, although at least once in the lyrics, in order to fit the
tempo of the song, the word is sung as "'cause."

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
#06) Davis, Skeeter: "The End Of The World" (1963) [2] {4}

TT: Born on 12/30.

The first version I ever knew of this song was by Herman's Hermits on their
second u.s. album, ON TOUR. For many years after I heard the Skeeter Davis
version, I preferred theirs. But I recently played them back-to-back and
realize now that I have moved beyond my teenage crush on lead singer Peter
Noone and now prefer Skeeter Davis' version.

If I was to say it to you
Girl we couldn't get much higher
#07) Doors, The: "Light My Fire" (1967) [1] {-}

TT: Jim Morrison was born on 12/8.
RL: Also, drummer John Densmore was born on 12/1.

As noted under the next item, this was remade by Jose Feliciano a year
later and peaked at #3. I picked these lyrics because I thought that
Feliciano sang, "Mama we couldn't get much higher," but at a different
part of the song, he does sing, "Girl, we couldn't get much higher."
So I had to rely on an intervening artist to separate these two, as well
as someone knowing the theme and realizing that it has to be the Doors.

Two people pointed out to me that they thought the lyrics should be,
"If I was to say to you." I listened again and still heard them as they
appear here. Since these lines are sung multiple times in the song, perhaps
at least one time they are sung one way, and at least once, they are sung
the other way.

We'll live a life no one has ever known
But I know you're thinking that I'm hardly grown
But oh thank God at last and finally
#08) Faithfull, Marianne: "Come And Stay With Me" (1965) [26] {-}

RL: Born on 12/29.

I had a hard time finding an artist to fill the gap alphabetically between
the Doors and where Jose Feliciano would go. For anyone who knew the theme,
it would be easy, since Feliciano's birthday is September 8. When I finally
found Marianne Faithfull, I wanted to use her bigger and more recognizable
hit, "As Tears Go By," because the Rolling Stones' version is also on
DECEMBER'S CHILDREN (AND OTHERS). But it was used too recently in a GOLQ,
although I have no one to blame but myself because it was one of mine.

The one we danced to all night long
It used to bring sweet memories (sweet memories)
Of a tender love that used to be
#09) Four Tops, The: "It's The Same Old Song" (1965) [5] {2}

TT: Duke Fakir (last surviving original member) was born on 12/26.

Motown is short on well-known performers born in December, so I was glad
to be able to use the Four Tops and the artist appearing in tie-breaker
slot #T2.

He's walkin' down
Some street in town
And I know he's lookin' there for me
#10) Francis, Connie: "Where The Boys Are" (1960) [4] {-}

Born on 12/12.

This song was written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield for the movie
of the same title, in which Connie Francis played a starring role. She
recorded the song in six languages in addition to English:

German: "Wenn ich trÃ?ume"
French: "Je sais qu'un gars"
Japanese: "Atashi-no"
Italian: "Qualcuno mi aspetta"
Neapolitan: "C'Ã? qualcuno"
Spanish: "Donde hay chicos"

Although it missed hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, it did reach #1
in 15 other countries. Her German, Japanese, Spanish, and Italian versions
are available on YouTube, as are a late 1970s disco remake and a demo sung
by Sedaka.

These arms
These arms want to hold you
Hold you again
#11) Guess Who, The: "These Eyes" (1969) [6] {-}

TT: Burton Cummings (lead vocals & keyboards) was born on 12/31.

The EJ'S & Co.: We note that this was the last hit single in which
a question mark followed the group's name on the label.

I accepted both forms of the group name as correct responses.

This is the first of two Canadian artists in a three-song range.

Now she's dancing going through the movements
Swaying to and fro
Body moving bringing back a memory
Thoughts of long ago
#12) Hollies, The: "Stop Stop Stop" (1966) [7] {-}

TT: Tony Hicks (group's lead guitarist) was born on 12/16.

RL: Also, drummer Bobby Elliott was born on 12/8. Hicks played the banjo
that can be heard prominently in this song.

Dale Latimer: The song's title was not spelled with exclamation marks,
but the title of an album that contained it was.

I accepted both forms of the title as correct responses.

Remember how it used to was
Before the rovin' eye of love
Why does it do the way it does
#13) Kim, Andy: "How'd We Ever Get This Way" (1968) [21] {-}

This was Andy's first hit. It was written by him and Jeff Barry, who also

RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #349 (GOLQ349)

Congratulations to DEC & Friends and to Delphi Trivia Club, who tied for first
with perfect scores.

Just behind, by part of a tiebreaker (explanation below), were The EJ'S & Co.
and Village Idiots.

A note about partial artist credit for the audio clues: Each version of a song
sounds unique - the equivalent of each artist using slightly different lyrics.
I decided to give half-credit for a wrong artist who fits alphabetically.
E.g., for song #25, Zacharias gets 10/10 points, Welk or Zabach gets 5/10, and
Holmes or Vaughn gets 0/10. Similarly for #T2, Graham gets a "+" while
Jansch or Simon gets a "-".

Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed).

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The March 2016 quiz (GOLQ #350)
will be posted soon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz0zVGKf76o

Drummer Andy White died 11/9/15 at 85. He was an experienced session
player whom Ron Richards (George Martin's lieutenant) hired for the group's
9/11/62 recording session, due to the label's wariness about their new
drummer (some guy named Starkey). In that session, Andy drummed on what
became the standard version of "Love Me Do" (Ringo drummed on the original
9/4/62 version, but was relegated to tambourine this time), as well as on
this, the B-side of their debut single (with Ringo on maracas).

#04) The Chantay's: "Pipeline" (1963) [4] {11} <->

Group member Brian Carman (who co-wrote "Pipeline") died 3/1/15 at 69.

#05) Floyd Cramer: "San Antonio Rose" (1961) [8] {-} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_UmmQaTmIg (Bob Wills, 1938)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8qhVnYkkdM (Floyd Cramer, 1961)

Originally recorded by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys in 1938. In 1940,
they recorded a version with lyrics, dubbed "New San Antonio Rose."

You set that music thumpin'
To you it's easy
When you go one-two-three
#06) Johnny Cymbal: "Mr. Bass Man" (1963) [16] {-} <20><118><276>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs2rn1tZ8Uk

Ronnie Bright, the uncredited bass voice on this song, died 11/26/15 at 77.
He sang for The Valentines in the '50s, and then had a long stint with The
Coasters (1968-2009). Ronnie's voice contributed to quite a range of songs,
from Barry Mann's "Who Put the Bomp" to Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes."

So lucky to be
The one you run to see
In the evening when the show is through
#07) Frankie Ford: "Time After Time" (1960) [75] {-} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I6s1J9ZSNw (Sinatra, 1947)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inkaUJbYo-g (Sinatra, 1957)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82u_YKJAfTE (Ford, 1960)

Ford died 9/28/15 at 76. Song was originally a hit for Frank Sinatra in
1947 (and Ol' Blue Eyes recorded it again in 1957). Chris Montez's version
subsequently charted in 1966. All these versions other than Ford's have
the third line as "... when the day is through." Wikipedia mentions around
80 artists who've recorded this song.

I too have lost my love today
All of my dreams have flown away
#08) The Fortunes: "You've Got Your Troubles" (1965) [7] {-} <24><130><186>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjqpqEPBEDU (U.S. single; faded ending)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJldHJPs84s (U.K. single; full ending)

The U.S. single on Press (with a listed running time of 3:00) truncated the
song by fading the ending early. Presumably, this was due to the unwritten
rule that Top-40 stations would not play songs longer than 3 minutes. The
U.K. single (Decca) had the full ending; no time is on that label, but it
runs around 3:20.

I can't take this loneliness you've given me, yeah
I can't go on givin' my life away
#09) Brenda Holloway: "Every Little Bit Hurts" (1964) [13] {n/c} <15><166>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogi5sxQxpII (1962 Del-Fi version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySpWbeAdpXk (1964 Motown hit version)

Originally recorded by Brenda for Del-Fi in 1962; she then re-recorded it
when she signed with Motown. The arrangements are similar, with the
notable addition of strings in the Motown version.

It's a crazy feeling
And I know it's got me reeling
I'm so glad that you're revealing your love for me
#10) Buddy Holly: "Rave On" (1958) [37] {-} <18><216>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RYKOtKkY3I (Sonny West, 1958)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeQUW-PGR_s (Buddy Holly, 1958)

Original version was recorded earlier in '58 by co-writer Sonny West.

And I feel like crying (you know he feels like crying)
Because I have no one to love
#11) The Impressions: "Sad, Sad Girl And Boy" (1963) [84] {-} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZmlZ83fFmI

Every time I open my mouth
She steps in, tryin' to put me out
How could she stoop so low?
#12) Ernie K-Doe: "Mother-in-Law" (1961) [1] {1} <22><116><216>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BqZoIVJdKc (early take, fast tempo)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDHgKyWiWso (master version)

Composer/producer/pianist Allen Toussaint died 11/9/15 at 77. The outtake
linked above (Take 5) is from the K-Doe best-of CD "A Real Mother-in-Law
for Ya." That CD also includes a bit of studio chatter before the master
take, in which Toussaint demonstrates the slower tempo he wants to try.

#13) The Mar-Keys: "Last Night" (1961) [3] {2} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1s09cXc9zQQ

Essentially, this group was the Stax/Volt house band (Steve Cropper,
Duck Dunn, etc.).

I can't remember when
I've ever felt a kiss
That made me feel like this
Let's do it over again
#14) Johnny Mathis: "Gina" (1962) [6] {-} <90><204>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6D14BVdHKpU

Original was released by Johnny Janis in 1960. It was recorded for the
"Gina, Gina" episode of "Diagnosis: Unknown," the 1960 summer replacement
series for the Garry Moore Show.

I love to feel your lips pressed so close to mine
Your tender kiss sends chills up and down my spine
#15) The Olympics: "Mine Exclusively" (1966) [99] {25} <115>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHYbFOpH9-k

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ349/GOLQ349-16.mp3
#16) Johnny Pate Quintet: "Swinging Shepherd Blues" (1958) [43] {17} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XtledXfq30 (Koffman)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6WqFgJh9Es (Pate)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJTr9fMK35A (Rose)

Written by flutist Moe Koffman. Three versions charted in early 1958:
Moe Koffman Quartette - title given as "The Swingin' Shepherd Blues";
Johnny Pate Quintet (featuring flutist Lennie Druss) - similar to Koffman's;
David Rose and His Orchestra - a non-jazzy arrangement, with strings.

Many's the time I've been two-timed
Many's the time I've been stung
Many a honey took all of my money
But that was when I was much younger
#17) Jimmie Rodgers: "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling In Love Again"
(1958) [7] {19} <6><154>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wxd9_lg-U9c

One of many songs produced by cousins Hugo Peretti & Luigi Creatore. They
also co-wrote this (under the pseudonym "Mark Markwell"), and co-owned the
record label (Roulette). Luigi died 12/13/15 at 93.

There's a certain little girl that's on my mind
Great Gosh a-mighty, she looks so fine
She's the best girl that I've ever had
But sometime she sure makes me feel so bad
#18) Billy Joe Royal: "Hush" (1967) [52] {-} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoJP65nAMGA (Royal, 1967)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTDwBtll3oM (Deep Purple, 1968)

Royal died 10/6/15 at 73. Song was a bigger hit for Deep Purple in '68.

I need you every day
I'd cry, I'd die if I couldn't have my way
So please don't leave me
Oh please believe me
#19) The Sapphires: "Gotta Have Your Love" (1965) [77] {33} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcWLrK5-yI4 (Sapphires, 1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P-ehtvzCAw (Carol Jackson, 1998)

The single features 3 impressive (albeit uncredited) backing vocalists:
Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, and Melba Moore. Second link is a 1998
version by the group's lead singer, Carol Jackson, who passed away in 2010.

I need ya, oh how I need ya
Why you do me like you do?
After I've been true to you
So deep in love with you
#20) The Supremes: "Baby Love" (1964) [1] {n/c} <51><119><303>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0LbX9snanY (original unreleased version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHCWCx01O90 (hit single version)

The earlier version, recorded in July '64, was vetoed by Berry Gordy, who
didn't like the arrangement. The released hit version was a re-recording
done in August. The slower July version has its charms, but to my ears,
the drum fills seem intrusive; also, it sorely misses Diana's intro.

Oh, society's goal
Is to be part of the whole
It may sound good to you
Not to me
#21) The Turtles: "Let Me Be" (1965) [29] {-} <63><150><304>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcTVtpr6Qzs (Turtles, 1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5czjBBBRas (P. F. Sloan, 1966)

Prolific songwriter P. F. Sloan died 11/15/15 at 70. He also recorded a
version of this song himself in 1966, on his "Twelve More Times" LP.

#22) The Ventures: "Walk - Don't Run" (1960) [2] {13} <->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxXnpfg2I7A (Johnny Smith, 1954)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzd-mBHPP-Q (Chet Atkins, 1957)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olkscmmRxpQ (Ventures, 1960)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqZRdSz_uLw (Johnny Smith, 1967)

Written & first recorded by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954 (with title
punctuated as "Walk, Don't Run!"). Chet Atkins recorded it in 1957
(as "Walk, Don't Run") for his "Hi-Fi in Focus" LP; this was the version
that Bob Bogle was familiar with and used as the basis for the Ventures'
rendition. Bogle played lead guitar on this recording; the following year,
