Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 18 updates in 5 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Mar 23 01:33PM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-11-02,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Bloor St. Irregulars,

have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2015-08-18 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 6, Round 7 - Sports - Not Gretzky

The answer is *not Gretzky*.

Here are 10 questions about hockey. In each case, name the player.
It will always be someone other than the Great One.

1. Gretzky holds the record for most points per game (PPG) over
the course of his career (1.92). This player places second,
averaging 1.88 PPG. He holds several other scoring records,
but is also fondly remembered for scoring the winning goal
(assisted by Gretzky) against Russia to essentially win the
1987 Canada Cup. Name him.

2. This decorated Detroit Red Wing, and contemporary of the Wayner,
ranks 6th in all-time points. He also holds the distinction
of being the longest-serving captain in North American team
sports history, at 19 years. He is now the GM of the Tampa
Bay Lightning and Team Canada. Name him.

3. The current captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, this player
holds the distinction of being the youngest member of the Triple
Gold Club -- winning a world championship, Olympic gold medal,
and Stanley Cup. (Even #99 hasn't done that!) He shares his
last name with another Manitoban, who served as the Minister
of Public Safety and Minister of Justice under Stephen Harper.
Name the hockey player.

4. This Russian superstar, who was drafted first overall in 2004
by the Washington Capitals, has won the Hart trophy as MVP
3 times (sharing this record with Gretzky among others) and
has led the league in goals 5 times -- most recently in 2015,
scoring 53. Name him.

5. This Sault Ste. Marie native born in 1942 became the first NHL
player to score 100 points in a season. His most productive
years were with the Boston Bruins, winning Stanley Cups in 1970
and 1972; in 1971 he set the single-season points record of 152
that was later shattered by Gretzky. He was the inspirational
leader of Team Canada during the Summit Series, and currently
serves as a radio announcer for the Tampa Bay Lightning --
a team he founded. Name him.

6. This Czechoslovakian-born center, who played 22 years for
the Chicago Black Hawks, is the 14th-highest scorer of all time.
He is the only player to win the Hart trophy, Art Ross, and
Lady Byng in the same season, actually doing it twice. In the
"Wayne's World" movies, Mike Myers inserted this player's name
on a Chicago doughnut chain store as an homage to Tim Horton's.
Name him.

7. The third member of the "Punch Line" from the 1940s with Toe
Blake and Elmer Lach, in 1944-45 this Montreal Canadien became
the first player to score 50 goals in 50 games. (Gretzky would
later go on to score 50 in 39 games in 1981-82.) He was
inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961 and now has a
trophy named after him, for the player who scores the most
regular-season goals. Name him.

8. This beloved Montreal Canadien center was the first winner
of the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP in 1965, and has
won 17 Stanley Cups as a player and executive. He was made
a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1998 and was named the
honorary captain of the 2010 men's Olympic team. Name him.

9. Gretzky played 1,487 games in the NHL, but this center holds
the record of in 964 *consecutive* games played, with the
Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals, and Hartford Whalers.
Name this player, who shares a last name with a Toronto street
that runs from Queens Quay to Bloor St.

10. Nicknamed "Mr. Goalie" and one of the pioneers of the butterfly
style of goaltending, this Humboldt (Saskatchewan) native holds
the record for most consecutive games played by a goalie at 502.

* Game 6, Round 8 - Entertainment - "Separated at Birth"

Each pair of pictures on the handout shows two individuals who,
despite appearances, are not actually related.

1. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/01.jpg

Alan Cumming is the Emmy-nominated actor on the left. The image
on the right shows 1980s the children's entertainer known as
Pee-Wee Herman -- but what is the real name of this actor, who
has voice credits in the movies "The Nightmare Before Christmas",
"Dr. Doolittle", and "The Smurfs"?

2. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/02.jpg

The image on the right is funnyman Will Ferrell, who appeared
on the Jimmy Fallon "Tonight Show" in a "drum-off" with Chad
Smith, pictured on the left. This was particularly hilarious
as Smith is the drummer for a California rock band, whose other
members include Anthony Kiedis, John Frusciante, and Michael
"Flea" Balzary (aka "Flea"). Name this band.

3. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/03.jpg

Pictured on the right is Willem Dafoe, an actor most famously
known for his roles in "Platoon", "The Last Temptation of
Christ" and the "Spider-Man" trilogy directed by Sam Raimi.
His doppelganger pictured on the left is an actor and comedian
who currently stars in the FX show "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll", but may
be best known as the writer and co-creator of another FX series,
"Rescue Me". Name him.

4. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/04.jpg

Jessica Biel, actress and wife of Justin Timberlake, is pictured
on the right. On the left is the similar-looking Evangeline
Lilly, who has appeared in such films as "The Hurt Locker",
"The Hobbit", and "Ant-Man", but is most widely known for playing
Kate Austen on this wildly popular (and some may say infuriating)
ABC series that ran from 2004 until 2010. Name the series.

5. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/05.jpg

These two images are in fact two different men. Jeffrey Dean
Morgan, pictured on the right is an actor, who has appeared in
"Grey's Anatomy", "Weeds", and "JAG". His "twin" on the left
is an acclaimed Spanish actor, who has appeared in such films
as "Skyfall", "Biutiful", and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"; he
also won an Academy Award for his chilling portrayal of Anton
Chigurh in "No Country for Old Men". Name him.

6. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/06.jpg

These two actors starred in sequels in a popular super-hero
movie trilogy. Heath Ledger (pictured on the right) won an
Oscar for his amazing performance as a diabolical criminal in
the second film. The actor on the left (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)
was a supporting player in the third movie, with the door
left open for his character to star in a possible spin-off.
Name the *first* film of the trilogy, released in 2005.

7. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/07.jpg

Katy Perry, the Grammy-award-winning singer, is pictured on the
left. On the right is this quirky star of the Fox show "New
Girl". She also appeared as the object of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's
affection in the 2009 film "(500) Days of Summer". Name her.

8. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/08.jpg

Terry O'Quinn, co-star with Evangeline Lilly on <answer 4>, is
pictured on the right. On the left is this English musician,
who is one of only three recording artists (along with Paul
McCartney and Michael Jackson) to have sold 100,000,000 albums
as a solo artist and separately as a principal member of a band.
Name him.

9. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/09.jpg

Seth McFarlane, the talented creator of "Family Guy", is shown
on the left. Name the actor on the right, who most famously
portrayed Peter Brady on the 1970s sitcom "The Brady Bunch".

10. See: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-8/sep/10.jpg

Liam Neeson and Ralph ("Rafe") Fiennes co-starred in the 1993
Best Picture winner "Schindler's List", with Neeson playing
the title character. What was the name of the villainous SS
officer Fiennes portrayed that earned him an Oscar nomination?

If you gave the name "Deschanel" as an answer, we need the first name. Please go back and supply it.

Just in case someone missed it, here is a reminder. About 1½ day more
to go. I will score this sometime on Friday.

This is Roating Quiz #214. As always, please post your answers to the
group before looking at anyone else's answers. Please, wnswer only from
your own knowledge and don't google, ask anyone else etc.

Each question is worth 1 pt. The winner will get the honour to set
RQ 215. In case of a tie, the bonus question will be the first tie
breaker. As a second tie breaker I will make a subjective judgement of
the incorrect answers.

I plan to post answers and scores next Friday.
