Editor's Note: The Critic's Annex will run on Friday.  The reason for the move is that NBCSN is airing the season opener for the K&N Pro Series East, the JET Tools 150 from New Smyrna Speedway, tonight at 11:30 p.m.  As you've probably read, that race ended in an extremely controversial fashion.  I want to: 1) See exactly what happened and 2) See how NBCSN handled that situation.  Think of it as an instant critique.  I'm really looking forward to it because New Smyrna Speedway puts on good races.  Any of you who watched the coverage of the World Series of Asphalt on FansChoice.tv will agree.

"Our goals are the same. To run the best race we can and put ourselves in contention for the win. But you do have to race a little differently. Our car doesn't have the speed that the top 10 or top 12 cars have so I have to be  a little more patient. I've got to pick and choose when to be aggressive and when [to] not.- David Ragan, on his grandmaster plan in the No. 23 this year.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:
Later that day in Atlanta after Park's crash, Todd Bodine put his No. 35 Tabasco Pontiac on the outside pole for the Primestar 500.  For Bodine, such an accomplishment was nice, but not necessarily out of the ordinary since he'd had a lot of success at Atlanta during his career.  However, it was a shock here.  Why?

Check back Friday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Wednesday's Answer:

Q:  In 1998, Dale Earnhardt, Inc. went full-time in Winston Cup with Steve Park as their driver.  However, the beginning of the season saw Park fail to finish the first two races, then DNQ at Las Vegas.  Atlanta completely derailed Park's season.  What happened?

A: Park appeared to either blow a right front tire or suffer a mechanical failure.  The result was that he went hard into the wall in turn 4, then hit it again.  By this point, Park had no brakes.  He continued into the quad-oval, hit the wall a third time, then crossed the grass and hit the pit wall.  ESPN was airing rare live coverage of opening practice that day, but was airing a piece about Jeff Burton at Las Vegas when it occurred.  Here's their aftermath/replay coverage.

Park suffered a broken leg in the crash, which put him out of the car until Indianapolis in August.  Phil Parsons and Ron Hornaday were tapped as subs, but neither managed to qualify the No. 1 at Atlanta or Darlington, respectively.  That led Dale Earnhardt to tap Darrell Waltrip as Park's sub.
