Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 23 updates in 5 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Oct 22 03:17PM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-06-01,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Five Guys Named Moe, and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2015-08-18 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 6, Round 4 - Miscellanous - They're #2

History remembers the winners and ignores the runners-up. Here
are 10 questions on 2nd-rankers, or in one case, a 3rd-ranker.

1. This consumer electronics company is also the second-largest
music company in the world, after Universal Music Group.
Name it.

2. Located 8,848 m above sea level, Mount Everest is the highest
mountain on Earth. Which is the second-highest?

3. According to a 2014 report on urban dwellers (i.e., people living
in cities and suburbs), Tokyo is the most populous metropolitan
area in the world, with about 38,000,000 people. Which one
comes second with 25,000,000?

4. Most Canadians are familiar with the fact that Canada ranks
second in the world in terms of total surface area. Many,
however, are unaware that if the area taken up by lakes and
rivers is subtracted, Canada's rank drops to a lowly #4.
Name the country that is the second-largest in the world with
respect to total *land* area.

5. With a fastest time of 9.58 seconds in the 100-meter dash,
Usain Bolt is considered the world's fastest human. The title
of second-fastest is shared by two men, one Jamaican and the
other American, who both recorded personal bests of 9.69 seconds.
Name either of these men.

6. Meryl Streep holds the record for the most Academy Award acting
nominations with 19. Two people are tied for second place
with 12 each. Name either.

7. On 2007-08-07 Barry Bonds hit his 756th career home run, breaking
the Major League Baseball record previously set by which player?

8. On 1911-12-14, Norwegian Roald Amundsen and four others became
the first human beings to reach the South Pole. 5 weeks later,
a British expedition reached the pole only to discover that
they were not the first. Tragically, all five members of the
British expedition perished on the return journey. Name the
Royal Navy officer who led this ill-fated voyage.

9. Monaco is the most densely populated country (sovereign nation)
in the world. Which nation comes second?

10. According to the "Forbes Fictional 15" -- a list of the
richest fictional characters -- Smaug the dragon ranks first
with $62,000,000,000. Second-placed duck Flintheart Glomgold,
with a mere $51,900,000,000, edged out his famous arch-rival on
this list. Name Glomgold's miserly arch-rival, #3 on the list.

After completing the round, please decode the rot13: vs lbh nafjrerq

* Game 6, Round 6 - Entertainment - Disney Princesses & Princes

In January 2000, as a shameless marketing ploy, the Disney company
decided to recognize certain characters as royalty, whether by
birth, marriage, or equivalent standards. Currently, there are
only 11 Disney princesses and 10 Disney princes who have gained
official recognition. Please see the handout at:

http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-6/disney.pdf

And, bibbity bobbity boo, let's see how savvy are you!

I've sorted the round into picture order. There were 6 decoys;
one of them is named in another question, and the others you can
identify if you like for fun, but for no points.

1. Based on Princess Badroulbadour from the "One Thousand and One
Nights" tale of "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp", she became
the 6th Disney princess. Name her.

2. While not officially a prince yet, this male protagonist from
2014's widely popular Frozen is expected to gain official
status with his suggested marriage to one the film's female
protagonists. Name him.

3. This is Belle. See #4.

4. Officially known as Prince Adam, but rarely referred to as such,
name this love interest to Belle (#3). He goes through a
remarkable transformation due to the power of love. Give his
better-known name.

5. While not royal in birth or in marriage, this character has
still been awarded princess status because of her courage and
self-reliance, having disguised herself as a male soldier in
order to fight in the Chinese army in place of her wounded
father. Name her.

6. (decoy)

7. While born a commoner in 1920s New Orleans, she attains princess
status by marrying Prince Naveen, the heir apparent to the King
of Maldonia. Name this first African-American princess *or* the
movie in which she was featured.

8. (decoy)

9. This true princess is the first-born of King Fergus and Queen
Elinor. She is the first to not have a love interest. Name her
*or* the movie she is featured in.

10. Rapunzel became the 10th Disney princess with the release of
this 2010 film. Name the film.

11. Also not officially one yet, she is expected to be the 12th
Disney princess. Name this resident of Arendelle who gets
Kristoff, even though her sister gets the killer song! Let it
go, we say!

12. (decoy)

13. The first prince to be based on a real person, he is the love
interest of the character shown in Picture #8. Though he
returned to England, he promised, "No matter what happens,
I'll always be with you, forever." Name him.

14. (decoy)

15. (decoy)

16. While not entirely human (normally a requirement for Disney
princesses), this character was deemed human-like enough to be
granted the honor. Give the name of this, the first redhead
to join the ranks.

There seems to be some disagreement on this point. I see National Geographic
pages that say "wisdom" (this is where Wikipedia gets it) but others that
say "mob or colony" such as http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/wombat/
(Not that NatGeo is necessarily the final authority, but I am not seeing any
other citations in a quick search.)

There is no final authority on any of them. It's just stuff people make
up. Someone else could make up something different with just as much
validity.

That's my position on this. To score on this round you had to guess
or know the answer that's in the same source the author used.

Having now seen the correct answer, the really annoying part of this
for me is that I've spent over a week in the Copley Place area *twice*,
for NABCs held jointly at the Westin and Marriott hotels there in
1999 and 2008.

But when Dan referred in the question to a "city block", I made the
mistake of thinking in terms of an open square and not a shopping mall,
let alone one that I'd walked through a bunch of times between the
two tournament hotels.

I was actually referring to Copley Square, which is open:

Copley Place is near it but not on it.
