Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 4 updates in 4 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Sep 09 03:36AM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-04-27,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Five Guys Named Moe, and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2015-08-18 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian

* Game 2, Round 9 - History - Pope Francis

Since becoming pope, Francis I has become one of the best-known,
most beloved, and yes, most controversial pontiffs. Here are ten
questions on the man.

1. By what name was he known before he chose the moniker "Francis"
as a tribute to St. Francis of Assisi?

2. Prior to his election at the papal conclave, he was archbishop
of which city?

3. Within 2 years, how old was Francis when he became pope in
March 2013?

4. Not only did his simple outfit of a white cassock and iron
cross foreshadow a simple papacy, his first two words to the
crowd from the balcony overlooking St. Peter Square were also
considered revolutionary in their humility. What were they?
Answer in English if you like.

5. He has published two documents since becoming pope: an
encyclical in June 2013 and an apostolic exhortation in November
2013. Give the title of *either one*, in the original Latin or
in English translation. (If this question is now out of date,
we still want one of these first two documents, not a later one.)

6. "Time" magazine named him as their 2013 Man of the Year.
And so did another magazine, following his comment, "If a person
is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge them?"
Name that magazine.

7. His first papal trip outside Italy was to attend the World
Youth Day in July 2013, in which country?

8. Backing up his statement that "a bishop who is not in the
service of the community does no good", in March 2014 Francis
forced the resignation of a bishop who, it had been revealed,
had spent $43,000,000 (US) on a luxurious new residence and
office complex -- while cutting staff! From *which European
country* does this former "Bishop of Bling" hail?

9. Francis was also cited as a key behind-the-scenes player in a
historic political announcement which took place on 2014-12-17.
What did he help facilitate?

10. One of his first statements as pope, "I want a church that is
poor and for the poor", signaled his deep commitment to reaching
out to the marginalized. In February 2015 the Vatican announced
two initiatives supporting the homeless in St. Peter's Square;
describe either one.

* Game 2, Round 10 - Challenge Round

A. Beethoven Compositions

We give you the formal names of works by Ludwig van Beethoven;
you give us the nickname by which each piece is more commonly known.

A1. Bagatelle in A minor for piano.

A2. Symphony #6 in F major.

B. Raymond Chandler in Hollywood

Author Raymond Chandler, best known as the creator of private
eye Philip Marlowe, was also a screenwriter, contributing to the
movie adaptations of other writers' crime classics. In each case,
name the film.

B1. Chandler co-wrote the screenplay for what 1944 film noir,
directed by Billy Wilder and based on a novel by James
M. Cain?

B2. Chandler collaborated on the script for what 1951 Alfred
Hitchcock film, based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith?

C. Canadian Provincial Birds

We name a bird; you name the Canadian province it's an official
symbol of.

C1. Blue jay.

C2. Great grey owl.

D. Philosopher Quotations

Who said (not necessarily in English)...

D1. "Man was born free, and everywhere he is in chains"?

D2. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for
good men to do nothing"?

E. Boxers Known as Rocky

Before Sylvester Stallone created the character of Rocky Balboa,
other fighters named Rocky ruled the boxing world. These questions
deal with those real-life pugilists.

E1. Rocky Marciano (born Rocco Francis Marchegiano), who was
the heavyweight champion from 1952 to 1956, went undefeated
and untied in his career in the ring, winning all 49 bouts.
Within 2, how many of those wins were knockouts?

E2. Middleweight champion Rocky Graziano (born Thomas Rocco
Barbella) was considered one of the greatest knockout artists
in boxing history, often able to take his opponent out with
a single punch. Who *played* Graziano in the 1956 movie
"Somebody Up There Likes Me"?

F. Mathematical Terms

Given the definition, name the mathematical term.

F1. The longest side of a right-angled triangle, as well as
being the side that's opposite the right angle.

F2. Whole numbers, positive or negative, including zero.

Magneto. 4 for Dan Blum, Stephen, and Gareth.

Stephen asserted that his own answer was wrong due to a retcon.
Dan Blum also wondered if his might be. According to Wikipedia,
there was a retcon some time this year and the answer is now Django
Maximoff. However on Marvel's own web site it says here

http://marvel.com/universe/Scarlet_Witch_%28Wanda_Maximoff%29

that Magneto is correct, and I'm taking that as definitive.
If their left hand doesn't know what their right hand is doing,
that's not my problem.

This time it was Dan Tilque who asserted that his own answer was
wrong, and again Wikipedia seems to confirm this, but DC Comics'
own web site

http://www.dccomics.com/characters/green-lantern

confirms it as correct and I'm taking that as definitive.

UK (accepting Scotland). 4 for Dan Tilque, Björn, Dan Blum, Stephen,
Gareth, and Erland. 3 for Joshua. 2 for Calvin.

> 10. For Nikola Tesla, *either* answer the same question as above

His birthplace is now in Croatia. As to nationality at birth,
I'm annoyed to find out that Erland's pre-complaint that this is
not clearly defined is valid -- at the time different groups within
the Austrian empire were declaring themselves to be "nations" and
demanding rights accordingly, so it depends on whether one accepts
their position. The originally expected answer was Serbian, but I'm
also accepting Austrian (but not "Austro-Hungarian"; that came later,
after the Austrians accepted the national claims from Hungary).

Only nobody gave either answer anyway. Those who got it right all
named the present-day country. So it's:

4 for Stephen and Marc. 3 for Joshua.
