Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 1 update in 1 topic

Gareth Owen <gwowen@gmail.com>: Aug 02 08:47AM +0100

> bribe, or failing that, whoever least recently set a Rotating Quiz.

> 1) In January 2015 Russia formed the Eurasian Economic Union with 4
> other countries. Name two of them [one point each].

Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan
(I'm scoring "White Russia" as correct, being a transliteration of
"Belarus", and presumably Belarus's name in Swedish)

> 2) In April, the World Health Organisation declared which disease
> eradicated from the Americas?

Rubella (German Measles) - good news, despite the backlash against the
MMR vaccine in the USA and elsewhere. Rubella infection during
pregnancy remains a major cause of congenital birth defects,
particularly in Africa. No-one got this.

> 3) In May, the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a baby. What is the
> child's name? (one point for first name, one bonus point for the
> full set of middle names).

Charlotte [Elizabeth Diana] - middle names are mum's and grandma's.

> 4) In March, whose twitter account notably tweeted
> "AT LAST, [redacted], WE MUST WALK TOGETHER"?

Sir Terry Pratchett, who had passed away. In Pratchett's book, the
figure of Death always speaks in capitals.

> 5) Two blockbuster movie released this year broke the record for the
> fastest to gross US$1billion at the box office. Name them. [one
> point for each]

Furious 7 (aka Fast and Furious 7) set a new record in April;
Jurassic World broke that record in June.

No-one got the first one.

> 6) The Grammy for Best Album went to an unsuspecting winner, much to the
> unsurprising chagrin of Kanye West. Which record won? [one point for
> the title, one for the artist]

Morning Phase by Beck. Personally, I don't think he ever topped Odelay.

> 7) The G7 summit was held in June - in which country?

Germany. I was a little worried that some of these questions would have
come up here in other RQs, Calvin's quizzes or the topical rounds of the
Canadian Inquisition. This one, and Q3, or ones like them, have
appeared. It didn't seem to help much.

> 8) Chris Froome won the Maillot Jaune of the Tour de France, but which
> team won the team competition?

Movistar - two of whose riders, Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde,
also placed second and third in the General Classification. Ironically,
Quintana may have won the GC but for a dreadful team error, getting
caught on the wrong side of a split created by crosswinds on the
seemingly-innocuous second stage of the race.

> 9) Harper Lee finally wrote another novel - what was its title?

Go Set A Watchman - as Mark Brader and Erland Sommarskog point out,
while the book was *released* this year, the text is considerably older.
Despite this poor wording, and given that I'm scoring "Ställ ut en
väktare" as correct, everyone got this one.

> 10) Who were asked their opinion of "Reforms For The Completion Of The
> Current Program And Beyond"?

The population of Greece. The document is one of two outlining the
economic bailout package on offer by the EC, the IMF and the ECB, whose
approval was sought in the July referendum. The Greeks did not approve,
but will seemingly be getting it anyway.

Scores:
Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Q5 Q6 Q7 Q8 Q9 Q10 Tot
Dan Blum 2 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 2 0 6
Chris F.A. Johnson 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 2 6
Mark Brader 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 3
swp 2 0 2 2 1 2 2 0 2 2 15
Erland Sommarskog 2 0 2 0 0 0 2 0 2 0 8
Peter Smith 1 0 2 2 0 0 0 2 2 2 11
Calvin 1 0 1 0 0 0 2 0 2 2 8
Marc Dashevsky 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 4
Pete 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 2 0 4
Dan Tilque 2 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 2 2 6

And the winner is .... SWP.

Congratulations Stephen, the next quiz is yours.

Congratulations to Peter Smith for pushing him close(ish) and for
being the only person to know the Tour de France answer.
