Oh, and just for fun, what if the scores on each question had been
squared before adding, as Stephen thought might be a good idea?

The answer is: Erland would have moved ahead of Peter for 3rd place,
but the other placings would have been unchanged.

That table puzzled me until I realized that it was sorted according to
the actual ranks of the countries, which, of course, could not be done
in the question posting. The scores are correct, though, as far as
I can see.

Here's a table of the posted answers in alphabetical order, as in the
questions, and the resulting scores.

Anyway, well done to Stephen! And thanks to Calvin for creativity.

The major effect was that Stephen got a worse score because he correctly
guess that they were at the bottom of the back. I knew that they were
down in the gutter, but took 200 because that was a round number. And,
after all, no country could trail North Korea, could it? Later, when
Stephen has posted his slate, I recalled that I had seen a note in the
papers about some list where North Korea had only been next-to-last. Most
likely it was this one.

I will have to admit that I grossly underrated the climate in Greece.

Thanks Mark- I should have posted the table sorted that way as well.

I trust that's not a euphemism :-)

cheers,
