As with RQ 178, I think this is better described as a set of puzzles
rather than trivia. rec.puzzles is over *there* and could sorely use
some traffic.

A couple-three years ago, there was a thread in r.p on this same
subject. Three of the ones on this quiz were recycled from a post I made
in that thread.

>> I. Maori term for a tribe. (3)

> IKI? (Hey, there aren't *that* many consonants in Maori, it might be right.)

The answer for this question shows up frequently in New Zealand news
reports, although since no one here is from NZ, it may be that no one
gets the answer.

Finding an decent I-drome for this quiz was difficult. I considered
going with the Finnish town named Ii. That would have been trivial with
the clues I'm giving, so it would have been an exercise in seeing who's
paying attention. I decided I didn't need such an exercise.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated below, and should be interpreted accordingly. If any
answers have changed due to newer news, you are still expected to
give the answers that were correct on those dates.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

As usual, these questions are running concurrently with the posting
of regular rounds, currently from Game 7 of the previous season.

All questions were written by members of Five Guys Named Moe, and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2015-02-23 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

The hand-ball thing was actually not that silly given the situation in
the game. Normally, stopping the ball on the goal-line is just stupid.
The other team get a penalty shot and you get a red card and miss the
game as well as the next. But this was the very last minute of overtime.
If he hadn't stopped the ball, Ghana would have scored and qualified
for the semifinal. And next game, who cares? Ghana got the penalty shot,
but Asomoah Gyan missed, and then Uruguay won the penalty shoot-out.

I recall that some people were really upset at the time, but compared
to what happened when Sepp Maier stopped Battiston in the semi-final
in 1982 this was a breeze.

Oh, Matterazzi! The tournament became a lot more, well, interesting,
when Alessandro Nesta got wounded, and Matterazzi had to take his
place. Zidane hardly deserves to have a black overall, but his exit
from world football, was, well, not really the expected.

(I suppose that was supposed to be 1974-75; I didn't notice until
now that only a single year was given.)

Stephen Perry:
> dave schultz (I still have his jersey)

I dunno. If *I* had a jersey belonging to someone whose forte was
back-alley-style fighting and who had amassed 472 penalty minutes in
one season (or one year, as applicable), I don't think I'd want to
admit it publicly. Even if he's not around to reclaim it, don't
you think he might have friends of like temperament?

Arrgh. This time I correctly posted the question set in a new
thread, but accidentally changed the subject-line tag from
QFTCI5GNM15 to QFTCI5GNM35 while changing the game numbers from
1-2 last time to 3-4.

I don't imagine that anyone is actually keying on the full tag
and was damaged by this, so I'll simply say that if you did miss
the posting that should have been "QFTCI5GNM15 Current Events 3-4",
look now for "QFTCI5GNM35 Current Events 3-4" and respond to that.

I protest. I gave 2 answers, the first of which was the expected answer in the original game. does that mean that I did not interpret them correctly according to the instructions at the top?

I am not disagreeing with your answer that was researched after the fact. but I pay my spies well for these things and would like you to accept the answer that was correct in the original game here as well.
