FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: When Texas Motor Speedway was brand-new, the beginning of races had the reputation of being car breakers.  The inaugural Coca-Cola 300 for the Busch Grand National Series was no exception with Jeff McClure's day essentially ending before reaching the start-finish line.  What happened?

Check back Tuesday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Friday's Answer:

Q: After the dark race weekend in 1994, at Imola, there were a series of rule changes made to Formula One.  For instance, a speed limit for the pit lane was introduced, as was a rule to keep crew members out of pit boxes unless they were setting up for stops or actually working on the car.  Previously, the pit lane was unrestricted and crews would mill about in their stalls for the entire race.  What kind of rule changes were made to the cars as a result?

A:  The most visible change made to cars after Imola was the introduction of holes in the airbox in order to slow speeds.  Of course, the FIA didn't totally specify where the holes should be at first, leading to Ferrari putting the holes on the side of the airbox instead of on the spine.  Front wing endplates and rear diffusers shrunk in order to reduce downforce.  Finally, a 1 cm thick "legality plank" of wood was added to the undertray of the car, effectively raising the minimum height of the car.
