FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: The ARCA Racing Series has traditionally accompanied the Sprint Cup Series at Daytona on Sprint Unlimited weekend.  Some of the races have been runaways, while others have been wreck-strewn.  The 1993 ARCA 200 was both.  A big wreck eliminated a good chunk of the field in the opening laps, including some of the potential contenders.  Jeff Purvis was essentially untouchable all day on the way to the win.  What was Purvis' trump card that he used to his advantage in the race?

Check back Tuesday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Tuesday's Answer:

Q:  In the Northeast, 56-year-old Brett Hearn is a living legend in Modified racing with over 800 career victories.  Hearn's NASCAR career was more of a start-and-stop affair, though with one career top-10 finish.  Hearn's last start in what is now the XFINITY Series was at Daytona in 1989.  Hearn kept himself out of trouble for most of the day, but ended up in the dirt at the end.  What happened?

A:  Hearn was essentially a victim here.  An incident exiting turn 2 in front of Hearn's Wheels Discount Auto Pontiac saw L.D. Ottinger spin and get his Oldsmobile airborne.  The footage is unclear, but the likely scenario is that Hearn attempted to slow for the crash and got hit hard in the left rear.  As cars in the then-Busch Grand National Series were fairly light, the force spun Hearn backwards and the transition flipped him.

Hearn sailed past Ottinger on his roof and slid into the backstretch grass before impacting the No. 42 of Elton Sawyer and rolling a couple of times before coming to rest right side up.  The crash can be viewed here.
