FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: ARCA's 2005 200-mile season opener was cut short of its scheduled distance despite no rain actually falling during the race.  Why did this happen?

Check back Friday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Wednesday's Answer:

Q:  Daytona International Speedway was one of the first tracks to pave over a large chunk of infield grass exiting turn 4 in the spring of 1984.  Why was this move done?

A:  There's a reason that Ken Squier would always refer to turn 4 at Daytona as "Calamity Corner."  The paving was done after the previous few years had seen a number of big wrecks exiting turn 4.  Darrell Waltrip's crash in the 1983 Daytona 500 is just one example.  So is Phil Finney's crash at the end of the 1980 Firecracker 400.  Speedweeks 1984 brought two horrific crashes there.  They were Ricky Rudd's infamous crash in the Busch Clash and Randy LaJoie's lesser known, but even scarier crash during the Twin 125's.  The paving of the infield also eliminated the guardrail that seemed to cause problems on its own, replacing it with a tall concrete wall.
