Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 10 updates in 4 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Jan 09 10:15PM -0600

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2014-11-17,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Unnatural Axxxe, and are

* Game 9, Round 7 - Miscellaneous - Birds

Where a sports team is asked for, you don't need to include the city.

1. This bird, the largest of its genus in North America, was hunted
to near extinction. The Toronto Zoo is part of a reintroduction
program, and for the first time ever, it bred at the Leslie St.
Spit in 2013. Name the bird.

2. This New World vulture became extinct in the wild in 1987, but
captive breeding and subsequent release have led to a slow
comeback. There are now over 400 birds in the wild or captivity.
Name it.

3. Where in San Francisco would you find a population of wild
parrots?

4. Where in Toronto would you find "Hawk Hill"?

5. What do we call the science of bird study?

6. In the scientific classification system, what *class* are birds?

7. The American coot is a rail, but is also known by another name,
which was also the favorite baseball team of Cpl. Klinger on
"M*A*S*H". What is that name?

8. Name the team which takes its name from the bird scientifically
called Cyanocitta crystata.

9. Name the 2011 birder movie starring Owen Wilson, Steve Martin,
and Jack Black.

10. Name the 1996 film in which a girl (Anna Paquin) and her father
(Jeff Daniels) attempt to lead a group of orphaned Canada geese
south by air.

* Game 9, Round 8 - Sports - Announcers in Quotes

Here's a round on famous sportscasters and famous things they
famously said while covering famous events.

1. ESPN announcer Stuart Scott is credited with inventing what
exclamation that begins with a word associated with ghosts?

For the remaining questions, name the sportscaster.

2. He was famous for saying, in Lake Placid in 1980, "Do you
believe in miracles?"

3. He gave up covering boxing after the fight between Larry Holmes
and Tex Cobb, saying, "Someone stop this senseless slaughter".

4. In 1988 this Dodgers announcer said: "All year long they looked
to him to light the fire and all year long he answered the
demands. High fly ball into right field. She is gone! In a
year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened."

5. He began every broadcast with "Good evening Canada, and hockey
fans in the United States". He is also famous for simply
screaming out the name, "Henderson!"

6. He has called Super Bowl games, NBA Finals, and Stanley Cup
Finals. His catchphrase is the word "Yesss!" -- shouted *with
authority*.

7. This late Chicago announcer was famous for leading the crowd
in a beer-soaked rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game"
in the 7th-inning stretch, followed by "Let's get some runs!"

8. This longtime New York Yankees announcer and sometime player
will always be associated with the exclamation "Holy cow!"

9. "A cannonading drive by Esposito! And a scintillating save
by Dryden! And the play is stopped as the puck is caught in
his paraphernalia." This hockey announcer was famous for his
sesquipedalian loquaciousness.

10. Name the man whose trademark line is "Let's get ready to
ruuuumbllllle!"

New York NY or Westport CT (they moved late in the series).
4 for Joshua, Marc, Bruce, Jason, and Dan Tilque.

A couple of people mentioned Los Angeles. This is the result of
confusing two or three different long-running sitcoms that both
starred Lucille Ball. "I Love Lucy" was her first one; it ran from
1951 to 1961 and she played Lucy Ricardo. Reruns of the show were
broadcast under several other titles, including "Lucy in Connecticut",
"The Sunday Lucy Show", and "The Lucy Show".

The second sitcom ran from 1962 to 1967, at first under the title
"The Lucille Ball Show" but soon changing to "The Lucy Show" --
one of the alternate titles of the first sitcom. In this one her
character was Lucy Carmichael and she lived first in Danfield CT,
then in San Francisco CA.

The third sitcom may also be considered as a continuation of the
second one, but with some characters having different names, and
other continuity changes. This one ran from 1968 to 1974 and was
titled "Here's Lucy", and *this* time the setting is Los Angeles.
Ball's character this time was Lucy Carter.

(Details from "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and
Cable TV Shows" by Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh.)

No, not San Francisco. It's Pittsburgh PA. 4 for Joshua.

> 8. "Frasier" -- US city.

Seattle WA. 4 for everyone -- Dan Blum, Joshua, Marc, Björn, Bruce,
Peter, Jason, Calvin, and Dan Tilque.

Minneapolis MN (accepting St. Paul MN). 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua,
Marc, Bruce, Jason, and Dan Tilque.

Los Angeles CA. 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, Marc, Bruce, Jason,

Incidentally, approximately this question was on "Jeopardy!" recently.
In fact it was the Final Jeopardy! question, on December 19. The
category was given as "International Motoring" and my guess was that
it was going to be about vehicular country codes.

Their version was a bit easier than Calvin's: they mentioned the UK and
asked for any one of the other three countries. Two of the three
contestants named Ireland, and the other guessed Poland.

Alas, that's the question I thought I was answering here.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #336 (GOLQ336)

Welcome to GOLQ336. There is no theme, but some of the songs or artists
have things in common with each other.

Enjoy!

-- Regina Litman <golq336@GOLQ.org>

P.S. Corrections and additions to past GOLQs that I have done:

1. The area code for Memphis is not 913. It's 901. 913 is in eastern
Kansas, near Kansas City, MO. Still, I don't regret using a Memphis theme
in the month that started with 09/01 in 2013.

2. The people in eastern Kansas probably left their hearts in San
Francisco after the San Francisco Giants broke them by beating the Kansas
City Royals in the last World Series. When I sent out the Results and
Answer Key for GOLQ332, I forgot to mention that Tony Bennett is still
releasing new albums at the age of 88. His latest was done with an artist
with whom I am not familiar named Lady Gaga.

3. In the Results and Answer Key for GOLQ316, I wondered if Quincy Jones
was still Lesley Gore's producer when she recorded "Summer And Sandy". No,
her producer for that recording was Bob Crewe, who died recently.
