What to Watch: Week of December 23-28:

- It's Christmas week.  While the teams will be working fairly hard on 2015 preparations for most of the week (Christmas is usually a day off at race shops), don't expect much news to break.  We'll still be here if it does, though.

Darrell Wallace, Jr. Officially Signs With Roush Fenway Racing

On Thursday, former Kyle Busch Motorsports driver Darrell Wallace, Jr. officially signed a deal that will see him drive the No. 6 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing in the XFINITY Series full-time in 2015.  Wallace will be part of a four-car operation along with Elliott Sadler, Ryan Reed and Chris Buescher.  Read more

Ben Kennedy Moves to Red Horse Racing

A couple of weeks ago, 2014 Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year Ben Kennedy was a victim of the spat between Harry Scott, Jr. and Steve Turner, which cost him his ride.  On Wednesday, Kennedy announced a new deal for 2015 that will see him move to Red Horse Racing full-time in a No. 11 Toyota, replacing German Quiroga.  Read more

Larson, McMurray Confirmed for Rolex 24 at Daytona as Ganassi Announces Driver Lineups

On Thursday, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates announced their 2015 driver lineup for the Rolex 24 at Daytona.  As is the norm, Ganassi has stacked his team with drivers from all of the series in which his teams compete in.

The team's full-time No. 01 will once again be captained by Scott Pruett.  The 54-year old will be going for his sixth overall victory at Daytona.  This time, he has some new blood.  Memo Rojas is out of the No. 01, taking his Telcel sponsorship with him.  Joey Hand will take his place for the full season, while the car will carry Ford EcoBoost colors.  Hand has previously raced full-time in Grand-Am here in the United States, but has spent the past couple of years racing full-time in DTM.

Pruett and Hand will be joined by Charlie Kimball and Sage Karam.  Kimball drove the No. 01 in 2013 at the Rolex 24, but only for one stint at night.  Regardless, that one stint was enough to get Kimball a Rolex watch as the No. 01 he drove won the race overall.  Meanwhile, Karam impressed last season at Daytona and especially Sebring.

The part-time No. 02 will have an all-star lineup as well.  Sprint Cup regulars Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson will return for another go-around in the car.  McMurray, who will compete for the sixth consecutive year for the Ganassi team, has grown into a steady presence behind the wheel in Daytona.  Larson, who will be competing in his second career TUSC race, was quite decent in the car last year despite very little experience on road courses.

The Cup regulars will be joined by Ganassi's Target-backed Verizon IndyCar Series drivers Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan, who have both ran very competitively in the past.

Team owner Chip Ganassi is very confident about his chances next month.

"I love this race because it is one of the few times that we are able to bring all of our drivers and partners together in one race," Ganassi said in a press release.  "NASCAR, INDYCAR and IMSA drivers and partners are all represented in this unique endurance event. We have had the good fortune of having success in this event which is the result of a lot of hard work by the crew, talent behind the wheel and at some level, a little luck. But I think the best thing about the Rolex 24 is that it is the first event of another season. I can't wait."

The octet of drivers will be behind the wheel at the Roar Before the 24 test session from January 9-11, 2015 (the test was pushed back as a result of NASCAR cancelling Preseason Thunder).  The 53rd running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona will be January 24-25.  The race will be televised on the FOX family of networks.  A broadcast schedule for the race will be released in the coming weeks.

Larson Now a Father

On Monday night, Kyle Larson's girlfriend, Katelyn Sweet, gave birth to her and Kyle's first child.  Owen Miyata Larson was born at 11:09 p.m. and weighed in at seven pounds and 14 ounces.  Owen is also 19.5 inches long.  According to Larson, both Katelyn and Owen are doing well.  We at Frontstretch wish the best for the Larson and Sweet families.

Punch to Remain With ESPN

On Monday morning, ESPN announced that longtime on-air personality Dr. Jerry Punch has signed a new contract that will see him remain with the Connecticut-based cable network in a familiar role.  Punch will return to his role at the network between 2003-2006, covering college football and basketball, while working the pits on Verizon IndyCar Series broadcasts.  Read more

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: In 1993, Jimmy Horton infamously made history when he rolled out of Talladega Superspeedway during the DieHard 500, a ride that completely overshadowed the life-threatening injuries sustained by Stanley Smith in the crash.  Who did Horton claim was the first person to approach him after his Active Trucking Chevrolet came to rest at the bottom of the hill supporting the turn 1 banking?

Check back next Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Last Monday's Answer:

Q:  In motorsports, the presence of collegiate sponsorship is not unprecedented.  Often times, it comes via sponsorship from other entities, such as Starter's sponsorship of Elton Sawyer in the Busch Series back in 2001.  However, Melling Racing in 1997 could have gone the extra mile.  Which university was planning on sponsorship Melling Racing and driver Lake Speed before the deal got nixed?

A:  For 1997, Melling Racing actually had sponsorship from the University of Nebraska set for the 1997 season before the NCAA stepped in and prevented the sponsorship.  A show car in Huskers colors was shown to the crowd at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln towards the end of the 1996 season.
