Frontstretch Folio: Sylvania 300
by Brad Morgan

The Sprint Cup Series travels back to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the 28th race of the 2014 season and second of the Chase on Sunday, Sept. 21. Television coverage of the Sylvania 300 begins at 2 PM ET on ESPN; your local Performance Racing Network (PRN) affiliate and SiriusXM Radio Channel 90 will handle the radio broadcast. Drivers will compete for at least 300 laps (317.4 miles) before the checkered flag waves.

Records and Facts

Brad Keselowski is the defending New Hampshire winner, after leading 138 laps in July. He returns to NHMS in search of another victory as the leader in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings. If Keselowski were to sweep, he would join Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson as the only drivers to do so.

Danica Patrick is the only female driver to compete at NHMS in a NSCS event.

The closest finish in a NSCS event at NHMS is the 0.068-second margin of victory by Denny Hamlin over Jeff Gordon in 2007.

They Said It:

"Last weekend was so heartbreaking, but it confirmed what we already knew in that we belong in this Chase. Now, we have to regroup and change our goal to winning. There is a possibility of getting in on points, but it is slim, so we need to focus on winning. New Hampshire isn't our best track in The Chase. I don't think we learned much in the July race that we can transfer to this weekend. We really need to start fresh. It is the one track I have been nervous about in The Chase. I enjoy racing at New Hampshire and have run well there in the past. For whatever reason, the last couple of years we have had a hard time getting a hold of that race track. Hopefully, Trent (Owens) and the boys will come up with something that will turn the middle like we need to and drive off the corners, and we'll have a good day. At this point, we need to do whatever we can to win the race." - Aric Almirola

"I think it's just optimism that we can run well [at New Hamphsire] with our M&M's Camry. It's a tough place to pass and can be really aggravating at times. You want to be able to pass that guy in front of you because you know that you are faster than them, but the way the air works and it being one groove, it makes it tough. It makes it hard for a guy to makes moves and get up to the front where they think they should be." - Kyle Busch

"You don't want to draw too much attention to yourself, but I believe that as soon as I saw this grid and how it all worked out and the Chase tracks I was like, 'Wow, this is like tailor-made for us.' It really is, we just have to get to that eliminator eight or whatever it's called and that's when we get into the wheelhouse of our race tracks that we've performed at in the past. I think that if we can make it to Homestead and have a shot, we go from being the extreme underdogs going into this probably to the favorite being that we've won there over the last couple years. Who knows how it all plays out. You have to get there first and you can't look that far ahead. You have to be consistent I believe these first two rounds and get yourself in position for those last four races." - Denny Hamlin

"It felt good coming into the Chase as the top-seed and it feels very good to know that we've advanced to the next round with two races to go. Looking ahead to this weekend, the Miller Lite Ford was strong here earlier this year so we will do our best to keep that going. We have good momentum right now, and we know that we have to keep developing the car and pushing as a team, whether it's on pit road, handling, spec or driver tactics. We're just going to stay focused, keep working and see what happens." - Brad Keselowski

"In my opinion, New Hampshire is a bigger version of Martinsville Speedway. It has the long straightaways and tight corners. It's a short race and I think that is probably the biggest thing because you have maybe three opportunities on pit road to either gain some spots, or lose some spots, and you need to make the best of that. It's a different kind of race because the shortness of the race and the number of laps you put on a set of tires." - Ryan Newman

Keeping It Short: Two Races Left To Crown The King Of Southern Supers

by Mike Neff

It all started on March 16 at South Alabama Speedway with the Rattler. 12 more events are in the books and this weekend the Southern Super Series will have back-to-back events at Five Flags Speedway and Mobile International Speedway. When the checkered flag flies at Mobile the 2014 champion will be crowned. The battle is strikingly similar to 2013 where Bubba Pollard led the points heading into Nashville for the All-American 400. Daniel Hemric was within striking distance but it was going to take some help for him to take the title.

As the race unfolded the circumstances all fell into place. Pollard was strong early but got caught up in someone else's mess and ended up taking one of the hardest hits he's ever taken in a race car. The end result was a DNF and Hemric finished high enough in the standings to win the title while Chase Elliott took the win in the race. This weekend things are a little tighter and Hemric could take the title through his own efforts. Pollard leads the points with 1,274 points to Hemric's 1,266.

Southern Super Series points can be earned both in qualifying and in the race. The pole winner receives 15 points. The outside front row started scores 14 with the third quickest qualifier receiving 13. The points decrease by one per position all of the way back through the field until they are down to one. All drivers receive one point provided they attempt to qualify. Once the race begins the winner receives 100 points, second receives 97, third receives 94 on down through the field, decreasing by three points per position. There are no bonus points for leading laps.

You can see, should Hemric sit on the pole for both races and win both races, Pollard will have to start second and finish second in order to win the title. Pollard has five wins this season and Hemric only has one going into the weekend. Pollard would win the tie breaker with his wins but it is almost as difficult to finish second in two races as it is to win them both. Anderson Bowen and Augie Grill are a distant third and fourth and could win the title but it will take a major problem for both Pollard and Hemric.

If you are in the area of Lower Alabama or the Panhandle of Florida this weekend, stop in to see the premier Super Late Models series in the Southeast as the Southern Super Series hits the track to settle their title.Admission at Five Flags and Mobile International is $15 for adults, $12 for Seniors, Students and Military. Kids 6-11 are $5 and children under 6 are free when accompanied by an adult.

Whelen All-American National Championship

This is the final weekend coming up for the Whelen All-American National Championship. Points can only be accumulated through Sunday the 22nd. A look at the standings points out that Anthony Anders has the title wrapped up. He is 12 points ahead of Lee Pulliam and there aren't six races left on the schedule for Pulliam to pick up those 12 points. Pulliam is also 13 points ahead of Keith Rocco so it will take an amazing effort this weekend for Rocco to overtake Pulliam for the runner-up spot. The battle is still on for fourth and fifth in the standings as Dillon Bassett is six points ahead of Ryan Preece and Chad Finchum is only one point off of Preece's rear bumper.

Peyton Sellers is 13 points behind Finchum so he will most likely not move up but he can certainly fall down. Kres Vandyke is only one point behind Peyton for seventh. Tommy Lemons Jr. is hanging onto ninth with two points in hand over Stewart Friesen. Similar to Sellers, Lemons most likely isn't moving up but he can most definitely slip. Matt Bowling is in 11th and hoping to get back into the Top 10. He's only four points behind Friesen and could leap frog his way back in.

1 Anthony Anders Anderson, Myrtle, Hickory, Greenville 49 28 42 46 720
2 Lee Pulliam Caraway, S Boston, Greenville, Motor Mile, Southern Natl 44 24 39 40 708
3 Keith Rocco Waterford, Stafford, Thompson 44 16 34 38 695
4 Dillon Bassett East Carolina, Caraway, Motor Mile, Langley, Anderson, Greenville, Southern Natl, Hickory 37 13 31 35 649
5 Ryan Preece Riverhead, Thompson, Stafford, Waterford 45 12 37 41 643
6 Chad Finchum L Pine, Kingsport 34 19 30 31 642
7 Peyton Sellers Langley, Motor Mile, Caraway, S Boston 35 5 28 34 629
8 Kres Vandyke Kingsport, Motor Mile, L Pine 36 8 32 34 628
9 Tommy Lemons, Jr Southern Natl, Caraway, Motor Mile, S Boston 43 6 29 36 611
10 Stewart Friesen Utica Rome, Grandview 21 7 19 20 609

The Whelen All-American Series features an "inverted" point format. Car count determines the points competitors can receive. Points are awarded in ascending order from last place at a rate of two points per position. Last place receives two points, next-to-last scores four and on up through the field to the winner. The maximum number of cars awarded points in a single event is 18. The winner of the event receives three bonus points if they start the race in position one through nine. If they start in 10th or further back they will receive five bonus points. Drivers can collect points for their 18 best finishes recorded before Sept.22. The maximum number of points a driver can receive is 738.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA

Q: The 1999 Dura Lube/KMart 300 is best known as the race in which Joe Nemechek earned his first career Cup victory (and SabCo Racing's first win since 1995). Terry Labonte was one of the strongest runners all day, racing in the top 5 until the final moments.  However, he ended the day on the hook.  What happened to put him out?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: In 1996, the-then Craftsman Truck Series made its debut at Loudon in the Pennzoil/VIP Tripleheader, a three-race slate along with the Featherlite Modifieds and the Busch North Series.  Ron Hornaday won the truck race, but only led about a quarter mile of it.  How did he pick up the victory?

A: The race came down to a green-white-checkered restart beyond the scheduled 200-lap distance.  Joe Ruttman led Jack Sprague at the white flag, but Sprague got a big run exiting turn 2.  Ruttman pulled back ahead entering turn 3 and ran side-by-side with Sprague.  The rear end of Sprague's Chevrolet wiggled, sending Sprague up the track and into Ruttman's left rear corner.  Ruttman spun out and Sprague lost his momentum.  Hornaday was simply able to slip by on the inside and take one of the easier wins of his career.  The GWC restart and aforementioned incident can be seen here.

While Sprague held on to finish second, Ruttman dropped all the way back to an eighth-place finish.  He was helped slightly when Jimmy Hensley spun and hit the inside wall on the frontstretch coming to the checkers.
