Logano Fastest in Opening Practice; 26 Exceed 200 MPH

Ever since the two-mile Michigan International Speedway was repaved ahead of the 2012 season, it has been the fastest track on the Sprint Cup Series schedule.  Friday's opening practice session did nothing to dispell that notion.  Joey Logano turned in the fastest lap of the session at 35.200 seconds (204.545 mph), just a couple of thousandths of a second off the track record.  Read more

Frontstretch Folio: Pure Michigan 400
by Brad Morgan

The Sprint Cup Series travels back to Michigan International Speedway for the 23rd race of the 2014 season Sunday, Aug. 17. Television coverage of the Pure Michigan 400 begins at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN; your local Motor Racing Network (MRN) affiliate or SiriusXM Channel 90 will have the radio broadcast. Drivers will compete for at least 200 laps (400 miles) before the checkered flag waves.

Records and Facts

Mark Martin jumped to the lead during a late-race restart in the 2013 Pure Michigan 400 and then ran out of fuel, allowing Joey Logano to claim the third victory of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career.

The two drivers share something in common in the MIS record book. Martin is the oldest pole winner, 53 years old at the time of his 2012 hot lap, while Logano serves as the youngest, posting a 203.949 mph in preparation for the race he won.

Jimmie Johnson won here in June, his first-career win at the two-mile speedway.

They Said It:

"When you come away from your best track (Michigan), a Roush Fenway track, running 19th and finishing 19th and that's how fast your car was, that was alarming for all of us and we just didn't understand that. We said there are a lot of things we need to do. We have priorities, but we're hoping that Michigan, the other reason we tested there, was gonna help us at Indy and Pocono, which it did help us probably more at Pocono than Indy because we were backed up. We had two days before we went to Indy, so we didn't really have a lot of time to implement some of the things we found, but it definitely showed at Pocono that we were better than we were. We were not a top 10 car yet, but really close and now we feel like we've found more speed. It takes time. These things take time. It's easy to get behind and it's really hard to catch up. We've stayed the course. We're a competitive team. We're about winning races and we're not giving up. It would be easy to throw the towel in and say, 'OK, we ran 19th at our best track, we're gonna give up.' That's not in our DNA and we haven't done that. I promise you it's gonna pay off." - Greg Biffle

"Well it's a real fast track so you want to have some horses pulling your car. And aero is big there too. We had a decent run going last time. Fuel mileage seems to be a factor a lot of times at the end of the race so you have to be on it as far as strategy and Brian Pattie always does a good job of that. We typically have good runs at Michigan. We ran up front for most of the race in June and got a top 10. I think we'll be just as competitive this time too. Track position is a big key to getting a good run. If we can maintain that and make sure we execute on everything from strategy to pit stops we should be fine." - Clint Bowyer

"We have struggled a bit at Michigan since the repave a few years ago, but I think the track is starting to age a bit, which usually helps our team. Michigan is a big, wide, fast track, and you really have to have a lot of horsepower to get down the long straightaways and through the corners. We have made a lot of progress on our program over the last few weeks, and hopefully will take another step this weekend in the FedEx Freight Toyota." - Denny Hamlin

"I think the key is different between all three series. For Cup this weekend the key is timing your pit stops perfectly because having the right position on the track is critical. You want to be in a spot where you're leading late in the race and don't have to pit again, and that is a very formidable position. And another thing that goes with it is the restart. You have to be on the front row on the restarts and you have to execute. If you can accomplish those two things, you'll probably win the race this weekend in the Cup Series." - Brad Keselowski

"Getting wrecked early and then driving the entire race at the rear of the field made for a very, very long day. It was another one of those weekends to forget. The worst part about what happened is that we basically didn't learn anything for the second go at Michigan." - Martin Truex, Jr.

Keepin' It Short: Tragedy from a Short Track Perspective
by Mike Neff

We've heard it hashed and rehashed for the last five days. The terrible accident that occurred in update New York has forever altered the racing landscape, from the Cup Series to Cycleland Speedway.

While death has always been a potential outcome any time someone straps themselves into a vehicle and tries to drive it as fast as they can, it rarely occurred thanks to someone posturing after an incident on the track. Now that the video has been seen around the world and the debate rages as to where the blame should land one thing is for sure, every race track in the country is going to make sure they have a rule in place about leaving your race car after an incident on the track.

The majority of the local short tracks in the country already had a rule on the books concerning drivers need to stay in the cars until safety personnel arrive on the scene. After Saturday night you can bet that it will be highlighted and emphasized in every drivers' meeting at every race track for the next month at least. The few tracks that did not have such a rule have already amended their rule books to make sure it is covered going forward. The fact that such a rule is necessary is rather ridiculous but, as we have seen for years, racers need rules to police themselves.

The greater question here is what impact is this tragedy going to have on racing in general at local short tracks. Passion drives local racing far more than dollars, especially in the support divisions. Like it or not, seeing drivers mix it up in and out of their cars is what will put butts in the seats more often than good racing at local tracks. Seeing drivers in danger is not what promoters want but passion and tempers gets the fans excited and generates the buzz that gets people talking about a race track and the happenings from week to week.

With tracks being forced to clamp down on drivers getting out of their cars the passion shown may be stifled to a certain extent. The vast majority of altercations at a local track occur in the pits anyway, so hopefully the long term implications of this are negligible, but drivers not throwing helmets or gloves at their competition is going to take a little bit of the show away from the fans.

The final consequence, that most everyone has no idea about at this point in time, will be the insurance impact. If the civil suit goes the distance and a seven figure penalty is awarded, the insurance companies that underwrite the policies for these local tracks very well may jack the premiums up thousands or tens of thousands of dollars. If something like that happens, the cost of operating a local short track, with the already paper thin margins they see will possibly result in more local tracks closing their doors.

One consequence that hopefully will spawn from this tragedy is the focus on lighting at local race tracks. Little venues in the sticks of states across the country don't have the millions of dollars it takes to implement a Musco lighting system that floods the entire racing surface with light. As a result, using old lights from football stadiums or retired generators results in dark spots on race tracks.

Speaking to multiple people about Canandaigua after the incident resulted in all of them mentioning that the turn two exit at the track is notoriously dark. Whether brighter lighting would have saved Kevin Ward, Jr. is pure speculation and doesn't make a difference today. However, if it will save drivers in the future let's hope that all local tracks will put some extra money toward brightening their surfaces going forward.

In the end this tragedy is just that. No one wins when a life is cut short. No one wins when the victim's family tries to extract their pound of flesh from anyone they can after the accident occurs. Hopefully the Wards will be able to celebrate the life of their son for the rest of their lives and remember him fondly. It will be nice to see if there are some kinds of memorials, trusts, scholarships or foundations set up to remember this young man in perpetuity.

At this point let us all just pray that God will grant peace to everyone involved from the drivers to the ticket takers.

Whelen All-American National Championship

Anthony Anders continues to lead the National Point standings this week having run one race last week but only managing a top 5 finish. Anders has 18 wins so at this point he can only add to his total with maximum point wins. Lee Pulliam did not run a race this past weekend as Mother Nature wreaked havoc on the East Coast. Keith Rocco sits in third with two more races in the books but one top 5 that did not increase his point total. Ryan Preece leapfrogged Peyton Sellers thanks to three races that included a win and three top 5 runs. The two drivers are actually tied for fourths but Preece is ahead based on the tie breaker.

The second half of the top 10 remained unchanged because all five drivers were victims of rainouts.

1 Anthony Anders Anderson, Myrtle, Hickory, Greenville 40 23 35 38 710
2 Lee Pulliam Caraway, S Boston, Greenville, Motor Mile, Southern Natl 32 15 27 28 691
3 Keith Rocco Waterford, Stafford, Thompson 33 11 25 28 673
4 Ryan Preece Riverhead, Thompson, Stafford, Waterford 33 11 26 30 629
5 Peyton Sellers Langley, Motor Mile, Caraway, S Boston 27 5 23 27 629
6 Dillon Bassett East Carolina, Caraway, Motor Mile, Langley, Anderson, Greenville, Southern Natl, Hickory 24 7 19 23 612
7 Kres Vandyke Kingsport, Motor Mile, L Pine 24 8 20 22 608
8 Tommy Lemons, Jr Southern Natl, Caraway, Motor Mile, S Boston 32 4 19 25 590
9 Matt Bowling Caraway, Langley, Motor Mile, S Boston, Southern Natl 28 2 20 24 576
10 Chad Finchum L Pine, Kingsport 22 10 19 19 574

The Whelen All-American Series features an "inverted" point format. Car count determines the points competitors can receive. Points are awarded in ascending order from last place at a rate of two points per position. Last place receives two points, next-to-last scores four and on up through the field to the winner. The maximum number of cars awarded points in a single event is 18. The winner of the event receives three bonus points if they start the race in position one through nine. If they start in tenth or further back they will receive five bonus points. Drivers can collect points for their 18 best finishes recorded before Sept. 22, 2014. The maximum number of points a driver can receive is 738.

This Week's Racing Schedule can be found here.

Thursday's Answer:

Q: In 2004, Travis Kvapil won the Line-X 200 (his own sponsor's race) to give Toyota their first-ever victory in the then-Craftsman Truck Series.  For which team did Kvapil achieve this feat?

A: By the second half of the 2000 season, ESPN already knew that they weren't going to be back in the Winston Cup or Busch series after the end of the season.  As a result, they were focusing on other properties.  This particular race was run the same weekend that ESPN was putting on X Games 6 on Pier 30-32 in San Francisco.  The coverage left Michigan almost as soon as the checkered flag fell to get to the X Games coverage (mind you, the games were moved to mid-August after being held in late June, the same weekend Cup was at Sears Point (Sonoma) the previous year).
