Frontstretch Folio: GoBowling.com 400

The Sprint Cup Series travels back to Pocono Raceway for the 21st race of the 2014 season on Sunday, Aug. 3. Television coverage of the GoBowling.com 400 begins at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN; your local Motor Racing Network (MRN) affiliate and SiriusXM Radio Channel 90 will handle the radio broadcast. Drivers will compete for at least 160 laps (400 miles) before the checkered flag waves.

Records and Facts

Kasey Kahne found the second of two 2013 wins in last season's GoBowling.com 400. Kahne led a race-high 66 laps and beat Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon to the checkered flag.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. returns to the Poconos after finding victory lane at the 2.5-mile track for the first time in 29 career starts. He'll attempt to become the seventh driver to secure a season sweep at Pocono.

Starting position will again be important this weekend, as it was last week at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That's not to say drivers who underperform in qualifying cannot win. Carl Edwards was victorious in 2005 after starting from the 29th position.

They Said It

"Oh yeah. There's that feel in the car, Indianapolis has 90 degree corners that are shaped the same as the tunnel turn at Pocono. And there are the long, flat straightaways that you're trying to balance the car out for the least amount of drag, and that translates from Indy to Pocono. So, the two racetracks are very similar. You can call the race differently, though, as far as pit strategy goes. But these are two sister racetracks that you can definitely say that the same program can work at both." – Kurt Busch

"I learned a lot in June that I think we can apply to the August race. We're building a notebook we can apply to the second half of the season. All of our Richard Childress Racing cars are getting better each and every week, it's a work in progress. We're working hard at every level of our organization. I'm looking forward to going to tracks for the second time. Pocono Raceway is unique in that you have three different corners to set up for. One's flat, one's banked and one's just a weird corner. I'm up for the challenge." – Austin Dillon

"The front straightaway at 'The Tricky Triangle' is the longest straightaway we race on, and there's a lot of speed that comes from the 850-plus horsepower we have beneath the hood of the Axalta Chevrolet SS as you enter Turn 1. The cool thing about Pocono is the three different corners – one is high-banked, one is flat and one is the 90-degree 'Tunnel Turn.' You approach each differently and you have to drive each differently. The car needs to be set up with compromise in mind to get through each of the corners. It's tricky. It's challenging." – Jeff Gordon

"It feels like we just left Pocono and now we're talking about going back so it's definitely spaced very close together. The rumble strips are really a non-issue. They wanted it to be an issue but it's not a problem since we don't run down there anyways. We definitely learned some things last time that we will apply this time." – Paul Menard

"I am looking forward to returning to Pocono Raceway. I expect it to be even better to race on the second time around because it should have held and retained some of the rubber we pushed down in the asphalt back in June. Plus, I think we learned a lot from Indy this past weekend that should help us for this weekend's race. Based on how we ran in June and what we did this past Sunday, we should have a shot at contending for the win this weekend." – Ryan Newman

Keepin' It Short: Short Track Racing Saved From Extinction
by Mike Neff

As always, Keepin' it Short tries to bring attention to some of the signature events in the short track racing world, whether individual events or series that crown a champion. The United States Modified Touring Series is one of the premier Modified series in the country. They compete primarily in the heartland of the country with a very extensive schedule. The series runs a 50 event regular season that wrapped up last weekend with the World Modified Dirt Track Championship. Now that the regular season is in the books the hunt for the National Championship begins. From August 1st through September 18th the series will run another 20 races to determine the winner of the Casey's Cup as the USMTS National Champion.

Thirty-five drivers have punched their ticket to compete for the Casey's Cup over the next month through points earned in the four regions of the USMTS or having perfect attendance at the events of one of those four regions. Any of the 35 drivers can ultimately walk away with the $20,000 top prize for the competitor crowned as the National Champion of Dirt Modified racing. Any driver can enter a Hunt for the Casey's Cup event but only the 35 qualified drivers are eligible to walk away with the ultimate prize after the championship weekend at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley Minnesota.

Some of the drivers to watch for the title include the top shoes in the point standings after the regular season. Stormy Scott is on top of the standings this year again. Even though he's been in this top position before he's never won the title. He has won 11 USMTS races this year and is the top dog in two of the four regions. Daniel Hilsabeck is in the second spot in points ahead of Stormy's twin brother Johnny who was the top point driver coming into last years Hunt for the Cup. Rodney Sanders won last year's Hunt and he is fourth in the point standings coming into the title run this year. He is on fire of late though, having won the last six races he entered in USMTS competition and 15 wins for the season. He also won the Central Region title this season. Rounding out the Top 5 in points is Kelly Shryock, the nine time USMTS National Champion. Bryan Rowland is the Northern Region champion and is sitting seventh in points.

Shryock is the most decorated champion in series history with his nine titles, including the first eight awarded from 1999 through 2006. Jason Krohn took the title in 2007. Tim Donlinger wrested the title away from Shryock on the final night of the 2008 Hunt. Shryocks ninth title came in 2009 before Jason Hughes took the top spot in 2010. Ryan Gustin is the only driver besides Shryock with more than one title, having won the 2011 and 2012 titles. As was mentioned earlier, Rodney Sanders took last year's Cup.

If you are anywhere in the Midwest during the month of August or in Spring Valley, Minnesota in the middle of September, check the schedule and go to one of these great USMTS shows. You won't be disappointed with the very competitive Modified racing provided on the Hunt for the Casey's Cup.

Whelen All-American National Championship

Two more wins this past week pushed Anthony Anders point total to 704 points, 34 shy of a perfect season. His 10 point week was worth three more points than Lee Pulliam's week and the lead in the National Points is now 13. Pulliam ran two races but only scored one win, increasing his point total to 691 from 684. Keith Rocco ran two races and notched one winn as well, bumping up his total by 11 points to 661. Peyton Sellers ran three races but was unable to score a win, bagging three Top 5s and adding six points to his season total. Dillon Bassett ran once but could only muster a Top 10 to increase his points by four up to 612.

Ryan Preece continues to lead the second half of the Top 10 in points after he ran three races this week and notched one Top 5 finish. That one result bumped up his point total to 596. Tommy Lemons Jr. ran two races and scored two Top 5s which added 14 points to his total. His 590 points jumped him up to seventh from eighth last week. Kres Vandyke competed in two races but his one Top 10 did not increase his season point total. Matt Bowling took two green flags but his Top 5 finish in one of the two races did not add any value to his season points. Randy Porter took over the tenth spot in the points this week from Chad Finchum.

The Whelen All-American Series features an "inverted" point format. Car count determines the points competitors can receive. Points are awarded in ascending order from last place at a rate of two points per position. Last place receives two points, next-to-last scores four and on up through the field to the winner. The maximum number of cars awarded points in a single event is 18. The winner of the event receives three bonus points if they start the race in position one through nine. If they start in tenth or further back they will receive five bonus points. Drivers can collect points for their 18 best finishes recorded before September 22, 2014. The maximum number of points a driver can receive is 738.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA

Q: Pocono Raceway only recently began hosting IndyCar races once again.  Previously, the track hosted a 500 mile CART race through the 1989 season.  Why did CART leave Pocono?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. may have won at Pocono back in June, but he's never really had the best luck on the scalene triangle.  The 2006 Pennsylvania 500 was no exception to the rule, as Earnhardt Jr. walked out of Pocono with a last -place finish.  What happened?

A: Earnhardt Jr. was battling for position with Reed Sorenson on the Long Pond Straightaway when Dave Blaney attempted to bump draft him.  Today, it would be ok.  In 2006, the bump lifted up the rear of Earnhardt Jr.'s Budweiser Chevrolet and turned him into the outside wall.  The crash can be seen here.

Earnhardt Jr. was ok, but had to go to the garage for repairs.  The No. 8 would eventually return to the track and run 27 more laps before pulling in for the day, unable to gain any more places.
