Kyle Larson Paces First Bristol Practice

A freshman driver on the Chase bubble topped the charts in Sprint Cup practice Friday morning. Kyle Larson led the pack, clocking a speed of 131.083 miles an hour as he hopes to win the pole and then the race Saturday night, locking him into NASCAR's 16-driver postseason lineup. Denny Hamlin, with a speed of 130.557 miles an hour ran second followed by Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

There was only one incident, involving David Stremme and the No. 33 Circle Sport Racing car. Stremme's throttle hung open, causing the car to hit the wall hard and forcing them into a backup for qualifying. Stremme wound up with the 43rd-fastest speed in practice; however, with just 43 cars entered there's no danger of him missing the race.

They Said It:

"I love Bristol and getting back there, running all three divisions is going to be fun again. Being able to get back in the Truck, of course and then run the Nationwide car and also the Cup car. We'd love to be able to repeat 2010 — that would be amazing — and do another trifecta. But, since they've ground that place it's not necessarily been my best track lately. So, I've got some work to do to figure out how to get better there and make it happen." - Kyle Busch

"I think every racer loves Bristol Motor Speedway. It's a fun little bullring. In the spring, the day race pretty much turned into a night race because of the weather and it worked out well for our team. We ended up having a really decent run there, so I have been looking forward to this race for awhile. It's the type of track where you just have to stay in the race the whole time and fight until the end." - Austin Dillon

"I always look forward to going to Bristol because I think that the racing has always been pretty good there. Certainly, the track changes a lot as the top line rubbers up throughout the weekend, but I'm looking forward to getting there this weekend. The last three races at Bristol, our No. 20 team has run really well even though we got wrecked out of two of those races and won the third. Bristol is one of the more physically demanding tracks that isn't very forgiving and there's a fine line between going fast and getting stuck in the fence, so it's all about finding that balance." - Matt Kenseth

They really haven't changed the track in a couple of years, so it's going to be where it was in the last few races. We're just up by the fence and with the ride-height rule and more aero this year, the cars handle better so you can run lower longer, but as the tires wear and the pace slows down you'll want to move to the top."- Paul Menard

"The speeds at Bristol are so much greater than they used to be. It used to be where they would fall off two, three or four seconds a run while fighting forward drive. Now it's not so much that, so it's pretty intense both mentally and physically." - Ryan Newman

Keepin' It Short: Truly the Fastest
by Mike Neff

With all of the talk about Bristol Motor Speedway being the world's fastest half-mile, it seemed appropriate to bring up the Must See Xtreme Sprint Series. It is a "must see" racing division that also holds the fastest lap time ever at Winchester Speedway in Indiana. The World Record time was a 12.669-second lap around the half-mile, high-banked track, nearly a tenth of a second faster than the time around Bristol. (The record is for an asphalt half-mile track. Paul McMahan holds the world record at dirt's Volusia Speedway Park, clocking in with 12.569 seconds.)

The Must See Racing Xtreme Sprints are the same basic platform as the World of Outlaws Winged Sprint Cars. They have 410 cubic inch engines strapped into a car that has a huge wing on top to force it down into the track and allow for the maximum amount of horsepower to be poured onto the rear wheels. The speed that these cars achieve rivals that of any race vehicles on the planet.

The season for the Must See Racing series is coming to an end this weekend with the crowning of their point champion at Berlin Raceway. Nine events have been contested so far with six different drivers visiting Victory Lane. Brian Gerster is currently on top of the point standings and scored a victory this year. Aaron Pierce and Jimmy McCune are chasing Gerster in points and have both scored two wins, followed by Troy DeCaire and Ryan Litt rounding out the top 5. Litt is the only top 5 championship contender without a win this year, while Jacob Wilson and JoJo Helberg have also notched victories. 40 different drivers have competed in Must See events in 2014.

The end of the point championship does not mean the end of competition for the Must See Xtreme Sprints, however. They have a Labor Day event at Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Indiana and then finally wrap up their activity for the year at the National Short Track Championships at Rockford Speedway.

If you want to see the true definition of speed at a local short track, head to Berlin Raceway this weekend and check out the Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint series. The excitement will be off the charts.

Whelen All-American National Championship

The hunt for the NASCAR Whelen All-American National Championship has reached the home stretch. As of Friday, August 22, there is one month left to accumulate points toward the title. Anthony Anders is 24 points short of a perfect season. He scored two wins at Greenville-Pickens again this weekend, bringing his season point total to 714. He has 25 victories this year but only six of them have been maximum point wins; so, he is starting races from the 10th position in order to increase his point total by two for every race he can win in the next month.

Lee Pulliam scored four wins in two days this past weekend to put his win total over 18 as well. He is now looking to score maximum point wins as well to try and eclipse the six-point deficit he has to Anders. The promise that Anders made to come to South Boston before the end of the year is probably not going to happen at this point in time because the need for points is too great for the short amount of time left. Behind them, Keith Rocco notched a single win in his three races this past weekend to bump his point total up by nine and solidify his hold on third place. Ryan Preece ran four races in the past week, scoring top 5s in all four of them. Unfortunately, he did not win any races and only managed to add four points to his total. Preece did retain fourth place in points over a hard-charging Dillon Bassett, who notched a win and three top 5s in the three races he ran last week. Bassett is now in fifth, just two points behind Preece.

The second half of the top 10 starts with Peyton Sellers who ran two races last week, notching one top-5 run. He did not increase his point total. Kres Vandyke raced four times and landed four top-5 runs with no wins. As a result, he only added 12 points to his total. Tommy Lemons remained in eighth place, scoring two wins in the two races he contested last week. His point total increased by 17 and pushed him over the 600-point mark. Chad Finchum ended the week in ninth thanks to two victories in the four races he ran during the week. Finchum is now six points out of eighth and 17 ahead of Matt Bowling, who rounds out the top 10 after turning in two top-5 runs in the two races he ran this week.

1 Anthony Anders Anderson, Myrtle, Hickory, Greenville 42 25 37 40 714
2 Lee Pulliam Caraway, S Boston, Greenville, Motor Mile, Southern Natl 36 19 31 32 708

9 Chad Finchum L Pine, Kingsport 26 12 22 23 601
10 Matt Bowling Caraway, Langley, Motor Mile, S Boston, Southern Natl 30 2 22 26 584

The Whelen All-American Series features an "inverted" point format. Car count determines the points competitors can receive. Points are awarded in ascending order from last place at a rate of two points per position. Last place receives two points, next-to-last scores four and on up through the field to the winner. The maximum number of cars awarded points in a single event is 18. The winner of the event receives three bonus points if they start the race in position one through nine. If they start in tenth or further back, they will receive five bonus points. Drivers can collect points for their 18 best finishes recorded before September 22, 2014. The maximum number of points a driver can receive is 738.

TODAY ON FRONTSTRETCH:
FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA

Q: The infamous 1995 Goody's 500 is best known for a finish where Dale Earnhardt got in the back of Terry Labonte and spun Labonte directly to paydirt.  However, after the race, Earnhardt ended up in an altercation with Rusty Wallace.  Why did that happen?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: During the telecast of the 1985 Busch 500 from then-Bristol International Raceway, Mike Alexander was billed as being from "across the street."  Being based across the street from the track gives you rare privileges.  How did Sadler Racing get its Chevrolet Monte Carlo into the pits at Bristol, according to ESPN?

A: According to ESPN, the team put headlights and taillights on their No. 95 Chevrolet and actually drove it across the street and down into the track.
