Johnson Fastest in First Sprint Cup Practice; Logano to Backup Car

Today at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Jimmie Johnson set the fastest lap in opening practice with a lap of 28.148 seconds (135.313 mph).  Kyle Larson was second quickest with a lap of 28.169 seconds (135.212 mph).  Points leader Jeff Gordon was third quickest, while Jamie McMurray and Kevin Harvick tied for fourth quickest with a lap of 28.186 seconds (135.131 mph).

The session was not without incident.  Joey Logano blew a tire on his No. 22 AutoTrader.com Ford and pounded the wall.  As a result, the team brought out their backup car.  With the backup, Logano was 11th quickest.

Also of note, the No. 44 of JJ Yeley for Xxxtreme Motorsports officially withdrew this morning.  As a result, BK Racing entered their No. 93 Toyota in order to fill out the field with Mike Bliss driving.  Bliss' No. 93 was 41st quickest in the session, but ran only five laps.  Qualifying is this afternoon at 4:30 PM and will be televised on FOX Sports 1.

Provident Metals to Sponsor Wise and PPR

On Thursday, Phil Parsons Racing announced that Provident Metals has signed a multi race sponsorship agreement with the organization, making it the primary sponsor for Josh Wise's No. 98 Chevrolet SS in four Sprint Cup Series races this season.

"The guys from Provident Metals arrived in Daytona to sign the agreement with monster boxes full of Zombucks silver rounds to cover their deposit," said Phil Parsons, owner of Phil Parsons Racing. "That was an exciting exchange and a first for us. We're thrilled to have them as part of our team.

Provident Metals is currently working on one of four paint schemes that will debut next month at the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway,

The remaining three races in which Provident Metals will be prominently displayed as sponsor are the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway on Sept. 6, the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Oct. 11 and the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on Nov. 2.

Talladega SuperSpeedway Hosts Business of NASCAR Event

Talladega SuperSpeedway along with the Birmingham Business Alliance hosted the Business of NASCAR "Put Your Business in the Fast Lane" summit on Thursday in Birmingham, Ala. Featured speakers included NASCAR president Mike Helton and championship-winning car owner Richard Childress.

Other featured panelists during Thursday's event included  Talladega SuperSpeedway chairman Grant Lynch, and sports business expert Rick Horrow served as moderator for the event, which focused on the business of NASCAR and Talladega SuperSpeedway's prominent and pivotal role in the sport.

"Over the last 45 years Talladega SuperSpeedway has produced some of the most memorable moments in our sport's history," said Helton, NASCAR's president since 2000 and former Talladega SuperSpeedway president from 1988-1993. "Great competition is at the heart of NASCAR, and Talladega constantly showcases three- and four-wide, side-by-side racing. For me, it's great to coming to Talladega twice a year because I know how important the track is to the state of Alabama and the NASCAR industry worldwide."

Talladega also holds a special significance to Richard Childress.

"Talladega SuperSpeedway has always been special to me since I started my NASCAR career there," he said.  "I still love driving through the tunnel twice a year because I know what the place is all about. It's fun for the fans and the competitors, and just a great place to be. My grandsons, Ty and Austin, and I love going out on Talladega Blvd in the infield to mingle with the fans — something NASCAR was founded on. Our sponsors love Talladega, too, and it's one of their 'must-see' places to go to entertain their customers and employees. It's just an amazing destination for everyone."

They Said It

"New Hampshire is really, really tough. We spend more time in the corners than we do in the straightaway. The corners are just really big and wide and really flat. You have to make sure your car is handling really well there because you can make up so much time in the corners. If you are off a just a little bit, it's magnified because you are in the corners so long. That's one race track that we know that it's all about handling. We need to get our cars to handle better there than we have in the past." – Aric Almirola

"[The lobster trophies from NHMS victories are] hanging on my wall right next to my trophy animals — I figure it's a trophy right. I have four or five deer heads on the wall, a couple elk heads and my lobster. Everybody is like, 'I get it, I get it, I get it, why is that there?' Hey, it's a trophy." – Clint Bowyer

"The hardest thing is just making your car turn in the middle of the corner and being able to have enough forward drive up off. It always seems like the New Hampshire race comes down to a track position strategy call on two tires or four tires toward the end of the race. Track position will play a big part, but getting your car to handle right will probably play an equal part." – Kevin Harvick

"I think the first thing that comes to mind about New Hampshire Motor Speedway is track position. This is one of the toughest tracks to pass on, so track position will be critical. This always seems to be a race where there are a lot of factors that come into play. The track is sensitive to temperature change, fuel strategy seems to be key and passing is difficult. If you can get all three of those things to go your way, you should be good." – Jamie McMurray

"It's a big motor deal. With the corners being so tight, you've got to put a lot of gear in the car to get it up off the corner. Forward bite is always an issue there too, so it's hard to get up off the corners. Then you've got long straightaways where you can kind of relax a little bit. Coming into the corners, you use a lot of brake, and it's hard to not only get the car stopped, but to get it to turn. Then you go through that challenge all over again." – Tony Stewart

Keepin' It Short: You Can Only Give So Much
by Mike Neff

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosts some of the biggest events in motorsports -- and in addition to those major events there are many other support events and experiences unique to the historic track in Speedway, Ind.

This week the track plays host to the very infancy of tomorrow's racing stars as it host the second annual Battle at the Brickyard. The event is a four-day extravaganza of USAC Quarter Midget racing.

USAC is ingrained in the very DNA of the Speedway. For years it was the sanctioning body for the 500. Most of the people who competed in the 500 for decades rose to that level of racing through the ranks of USAC. The bottom rung of the USAC ladder is the Quarter Midget. Similar to most go-kart races are a multitude of classes designed to provide fair racing for all ages and abilities. This year's Battle will have feature races for 18 different classes.

The event is round five of the USAC Generation Next National Series. Drivers have already run events in North Carolina, Texas, California, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Tennessee. The developmental series prepares the drivers to move up into the ranks of USAC and other racing series. Some of the drivers have already begun competing in USAC's Midget series.

There were over 270 entrants in the event in 2010 for the week's four days of competition. Throughout the week the drivers will be treated to two-seater IndyCar rides. The schedule includes action from Wednesday through Saturday. Heat races will be run on Wednesday and Thursday. Lower Mains will be contested on Friday with the A-Mains and a Race of Champions contested on Saturday, ultimately crowning 18 Brickyard Champions.

The top 3 drivers in each of the 18 divisions will receive a commemorative brick and a championship flag signed by all of the participants. For fans who would like to watch the action remotely they can view a live video stream on www.usacracing.com. For fans who are interested in watching the races in person, admission is free. The schedule of events can be found here.

Similar to the winners of the major races at the Speedway, the winners in 2013 kissed the yard of bricks after their Victory Lane celebration. It will most likely happen again this year.

Whelen All-American Series National Championship

The battle at the top of the national point standings is heating up. Anthony Anders ran two races last week but only managed two top-5 finishes, failing to increase his point total. Meanwhile, Lee Pulliam raced in four events, scoring two wins and four top 5s. As a result he increased his point total by 24, drawing to within three points of Anders.

The remainder of the top 5 in points stayed in the same positions. Keith Rocco won the only race he contested, adding 13 points to increase his total to 646. Peyton Sellers landed a top 5 in his one race, adding two points to his total, making it 621. Dillon Bassett snagged a top 5 in his one race to jump up to 594 points.

In the second half of the top 10, Ryan Preece and Tommy Lemons Jr. managed to jump over Matt Bowling. Preece won the one race he ran, increasing his total by 19 to 567 while Lemons ran three races scoring two top 5s and three top 10s. His point total increased to 562, passing Bowling by two points. Bowling ran one race with a top 10 but didn't add to his 560 points. Randy Porter didn't compete this past week so Kres Vandyke's win and increase of 39 points moved him up to the ninth spot.

1 Anthony Anders Myrtle, Greenville, Anderson, Hickory 32 17 28 30 684
2 Lee Pulliam South Boston, Southern National, Motor Mile, Caraway 26 13 22 22 681
3 Keith Rocco Waterford, Stafford, Thompson 21 8 18 21 646
4 Peyton Sellers Caraway, S Boston, Motor Mile 21 5 19 21 621
5 Dillon Bassett Southern Natl, Hickory, Greenville, East Carolina, Caraway, Anderson 21 7 17 20 594
6 Matt Bowling Motor Mile, S Boston, Caraway, Southern Natl 23 2 16 19 560
7 Ryan Preece Waterford, Riverhead, Stafford 20 6 15 19 558
8 Tommy Lemons Jr. Southern Natl, Caraway, S. Boston, Motor Mile 25 4 13 18 530
9 Randy Porter Greenville, Anderson 18 5 13 15 517
10 Kres Vandyke Kingsport, Lonesome Pine 17 6 15 16 506

The Whelen All-American Series features an "inverted" point format. Car count determines the points competitors can receive. Points are awarded in ascending order from last place at a rate of two points per position. Last place receives two points, next-to-last scores four and on up through the field to the winner. The maximum number of cars awarded points in a single event is 18. The winner of the event receives three bonus points if they start the race in position one through nine. If they start in 10th or further back they will receive five bonus points. Drivers can collect points for their 18 best finishes recorded before September 22, 2014. The maximum number of points a driver can receive is 738.

This week's race schedule can be found here.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA

Q:  If you look at the finishing order of the 2004 Siemens 200, you'll notice that Paul Wolfe, current crew chief for Brad Keselowski in the Sprint Cup Series, finished a decent 12th for Tommy Baldwin, Jr.  Name the program that saw drivers like Wolfe share the No. 6 in the Nationwide Series at the time.

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q:  In 2000 at New Hampshire, the first thing on everyone's mind were wrecks.  When the Busch Series traveled there for their standalone race, they lost Adam Petty to a stuck throttle in practice at the young age of 19.  The race didn't see any injuries, but it didn't get off to any better of a start.  What happened?

A: Multiple wrecks took place at same time in Turn 1 at the start of the race.  First, Bobby Hillin, Jr., driving a Cottonelle Chevrolet co-sponsored by discount store chain Bradlees (a interesting combination, since neither Bradlees or the race team was around a year later) spun and hit the wall after contact with Michael Ritch.  Chad Chaffin spun and backed Jimmy Means' No. 77 into the wall, then was hit by Joe Bessey.  Kevin Grubb, Glenn Allen, Jr. and Lyndon Amick were also involved.  The crash can be seen here.

Chaffin and Bessey were out on the spot.  Amick and Grubb were eliminated in later crashes.  Hillin later dropped out late in the race.  Allen ended up eight laps down in 31st.  Ritch ended up finishing the highest out of those involved in the crash: 22nd, one lap down.
